Equipment of Innistrad in D&D, Part 3

Part 1
Part 2

Another Innistrad post, here are some more equipment items adapted for D&D:

Bladed Bracers
Wondrous Item - Uncommon
While wearing these bracers, you gain a +1 bonus to AC. In addition, your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 slashing damage, and count as silvered.

This item is intended to work similarly to the bonus granted by Demon Armour, but to a much smaller advantage. As such, I removed the bonus to attack and damage rolls, and lowered the damage to 1d6. The bladed bracers granting +1 AC represents them working as one small piece of additional armour for the wearer. I added the Silvered damage to match the flavour of these bracers being “Forged from the rubble of the Helvault.”

Cobbled Wings
Wondrous Item - Uncommon
These wings sewn from flesh have 5 charges, which can be expended to grant the wearer flying speed equal to their walking speed for one hour.
This item regains all lost charges when outside in a thunderstorm. If a character expends a charge of this item in a thunderstorm, the wearer suffers 1d8 lightning damage, gains flying speed equal to double their walking speed for the duration of the storm.

While the card itself only grants flying, I wanted to translate it in more of an exciting manner than simply flying speed. The use of charges that recover in lightning storms was inspired by another necro-alchemist themed card, Rooftop Storm. I felt that extending the flavour of insidious necromantic inventions powered by lightning would work well to extend onto this item to make it more than just a reskinned version of any other item that grants flying speed.

Murderer’s Weapon
Magic Weapon (any) - Uncommon (Requires attunement)
You gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls made with this weapon.
Cursed. When you become attuned to this item, your alignment changes to evil, and you cannot unattune to this item. You can end the curse with the remove curse spell, which allows you to unnatune to this item, and returns your attunement to what it was before you became attuned to this item.

The design for this item was to mirror the flavour text, which i prefer to do with items like this where the flavour cannot be turned into Magic mechanics, but can be translated into D&D mechanics (which can make the item better fit the theme of the card). I felt that the +2 bonus to damage was thematic for making the weapon more likely to kill when you hit with it, making it feel more like a killer’s weapon than just a warrior’s. The power level of this bonus seemed appropriate at uncommon, as it is comparably powerful in a different way to the standard “+1 to attack and damage rolls” at uncommon, and is not counterbalanced by the effect of the curse. In the Innistrad setting, the curse on this item can change how player characters act around one another, potentially driving a party apart, as is appropriate for the dark hopelessness of Innistrad at its most sinister.

Neglected Heirloom
Magic Weapon (Greatsword) - Very Rare (requires attunement)
You gain a +1 bonus to your attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. If you shapechange while attuned to this weapon, it transforms into Ashmouth Blade.

Ashmouth Blade
Magic Weapon (Greatsword) - Very Rare (requires attunement by a shapechanger)
You gain a +3 bonus to your attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. In addition, when this blade transforms, you may immediately make an attack with it, without making an attack action.
If you were attuned to Neglected Heirloom when it transformed into Ashmouth blade, you stay attuned to the item when it becomes Ashmouth blade. If a character is not attuned to this item, it transforms back into Neglected Heirloom.

As First Strike can’t be used to modify the initiative value of the wielder since the weapon is likely to transform during combat, I took a different approach that still matched the flavour of making a quick attack, by allowing the wielder to make an immediate attack without spending their action. To mirror the effect of it transforming when the wielder transforms, I had the transformation triggered by shapechanging, and the transformed version requiring attunement from the shapechanger. While Ashmouth Blade does not transform back on the card, I felt that it doing so matched the flavour of the item being “neglected” and forgotten.

I have some more Innistrad posts in the works to follow this one, including some creature design, as well as some other things from different planes coming very soon, including some more equipment, spells, and a new subclass in the works too.

Werewolf! Ashton

Words: 4.6k

Warning: smut, tying up wit rope

Summary: Y/N rescues a wolf and patches it up when it’s bleeding. Little does she know that this wolf could turn into a human and show her the best time of her life.

“Y/N” the barrister said. I looked up from the sugar pot I had been staring at for at least 3 minutes and walked over to the man holding my strawberry and cream cooler. I thanked the man before making my way outside. God bless Starbucks for staying open for 24 hours. It was 1am and I had just finished my course work at the college library. It had taken me three week’s to complete the whole project and was due in tomorrow, which I thought I’d spend the whole night completing it. That was a bad idea as now the only thing keeping me from collapsing was the wetness of the cooler in my hand. The coldness of it dripping over my hand.

I walked down the road to my house, the street lights lighting up the grey pavement. There was a fews whistles of wind as it made my tartan scarf flap behind me slightly. I sucked onto the see-through straw, watching the pink liquid shoot up. I heard the screeching of tyres come around the corner and a car speed past me. Some people are so impolite at this time of night, people are sleeping but no you have to speed round corners and cause a commotion. I followed the path round the corner past the alleyway but not before hearing a whimper. I looked into the ally way, seeing a large brown animal. Was it a dog?

Title: Terraforming

“My idea.

In 2050, Earth is overpopulated and polluted. States are deluged by asylum seekers fleeing the chaos and war which has taken hold around the world. Civilization is on the brink of collapse.

Year 2070 EDEN industries starting with terraforming and colonization of moon. Year 2100 many refugees from earth working from EDEN company as cheap labor and many of them dying everyday.”

After every full moon, it always takes Remus a couple of days to recover from his severely weakened state. Sirius goes out of his way to do everything he can to help - even taking notes for Remus while he's on sick leave at the nurse's ward. Madame Pomfrey has long since stopped trying to kick Sirius out, because he just keeps finding ways to sneak in to visit and comfort Remus. Remus wakes up to dark chocolate bars on the bedside and Sirius personally wraps his new cuts and "kisses him better".

Goodness. I can’t believe I’m just now getting to this. I’m so sorry! Please forgive me!

  • “You should join the others, Sirius.” Remus says in his second year to the boy sitting at the foot of his hospital bed. “It won’t be long before Madam Pomfrey comes along to kick you out anyway.”
  • Sirius scoffs as he watches the retreating backs of Peter and James, then frowns. How could they be okay to just leave him there by himself.
  • “You need the company,” Sirius insists. Remus offers him a weak smile through his bandages and closes his eyes. He opens his mouth, presumably to argue some other point, but he dozes off with a small, upturned curl on his lips.
  • Sirius smiles, slides off the foot of the bed, and pulls the covers up to Remus’s chin.
  • “Sleep tight, Remus.”
  • As he turns to leave, Madam Pomfrey is waving him out.
  • “Off to bed, Mr. Black. You may visit him again in the morning.”
  • Sirius takes a final glance over his shoulder at his sleeping friend before joining the other two.

  • Fourth year is particularly bad. Something about puberty and werewolves doesn’t mix well and Remus’s transformations are becoming more painful than they were in the past.
  • Sirius paces several beds away because he can’t stand to see Remus so…broken. Peter sits with his knees curled to his chest next to James, who finally gets fet up with Sirius’s constant movement and halts him by the hem of his sweater.
  • “Stop,” he says quietly, and Sirius wants to yell. He wants to grip the front of James Potter’s stupid shirt and shake him. Instead he bites his lip and stares as Madam Pomfrey works to clear the blood from Remus’s chest.
  • It feels like hours before she turns around and wipes her brow.
  • “To class, boys. All of you.”
  • Peter frowns and hangs his head, James groans in definite protest, and Sirius…
  • “No way!” He looks at James frantically for back up, but he sighs heavily, choosing not to fight this battle.
  • “He’s our friend!”
  • “Sirius, we should go,” James says quietly.
  • “Mr. Black, you will go to class or I will be forced to call Professor McGonagall to escort you out.”
  • “You must be joking-”
  • “No need, Madam Pomfrey.” James declares as he drags Sirius out of the wing, Peter in tow.
  • As soon as they were out of earshot, Sirius whirled on him.
  • “Do you even care?! What the hell, Potter?!”
  • James rolls his eyes.
  • “Of course I care, you prat, but there are other things we can do to help Remus then be in his face when he needs to rest.”
  • Sirius opens his mouth to argue, but he growls instead, a sign of defeat.
  • The walk to Charms is silent as Sirius ponders what he can do to make things easier for Remus.
  • Chocolate. Remus practically lives on the stuff. And tea. Notes? He can take notes. Despite not taking his own notes, Remus has made passing remarks that he’s rather good at it.
  • Perhaps Potter is onto something.

  • Seventh year comes and Sirius slides the cloak off his shoulder, revealing an armful of sweets, a cup of Remus’s favorite tea charmed not to spill, and notes from their Defense Against the Dark Arts.
  • “You’re impossible, Padfoot,” Remus says with a smile and sits up with a little bit of difficulty.
  • “Such harsh words, Moony.” Sirius sets everything down on his bedside table and sits beside him.
  • “I save the best ones for you.”
  • Sirius laughs quietly and kisses his forehead.
  • “You seem like you’re feeling better. I was worried.”
  • Remus welcomes the affection and nestles into Sirius’s neck.
  • “You always worry.”
  • They sit in silence for a long while, even after Sirius adjusts to lay beside him.
  • Since that day in their fourth year, Sirius had been sneaking in to see him the nights following the full moon each month, always equipped with notes and chocolates to help Remus without being in his face, like James suggested.
  • Of course, it had been nice to know in fifth year that all Remus really wanted was Sirius in his face all the time.
  • “You should get going before Madam Pomfrey finds you here after hours again,” Remus whispers, but he makes no movement to indicate he really wants him to leave.
  • Remus is answered with the sound of quiet snoring. He smiles and kisses his cheek.
  • A good distance away in the shadows, Madam Pomfrey rolls her eyes. Mostly because she’s tired, but she’s also glad that someone is so dedicated to Remus Lupin that she can’t bring herself to tell Sirius Black to go to bed.

That got long. I hope this is what you wanted, dear! Thanks again for sending this, and I’m sorry again that it took me so long to get to!

Did you happen to catch the asteroid that is buzzing by us right now? If you have a telescope and a clear sky to the east, there’s still time to see asteroid 2004 BL86. The 1,100-foot-diameter body got as close as 745,000 miles from Earth yesterday, about 3.1 times farther than the distance from us to the moon.

Unless you have equipment like NASA’s 230-foot-wide Deep Space Network antenna, though, you won’t be able to see this little surprise tagging along with BL86. Yesterday, scientists using the antenna in Goldstone, Calif. took radar images of the asteroid and found that it is travelling with a little moon just 230 feet in diameter.

Researchers at the Jet Propulsion Lab say such asteroid duos aren’t an anomaly in our solar system: A survey of asteroids near Earth that are 655 feet across or larger found that some 16 percent have one or two moons orbiting them.
