Magic and Psychodrama

I creep on a lot of magic blogs around here, and you know, one of the reasons questions like this appear, is because we don’t discuss psychodrama. And honestly, because I’m sort of old, I’m not sure if psychodrama is taught anymore? As in I’m not sure if it is appearing in your reading and research.

I encourage the lot of you to take some time and read up on psychodrama. Ritual magicians use psychodrama to set a mood, and get into a magical mental space that pretty much leads to being in a magical physical space.

Psychodrama lays the smackdown on doubt. You’re in character. You become a character actor. You lose yourself in the process and you come away with a fan-fuckin-tastic completed spell. Psychodrama gets you out of your own way.

One might notice that I teach a lot of low-tool no-tool magic, and that’s one of the reasons I say that I am not a good beginner practitioner teacher. Beginner magicians, in my honest opinion, must develop a sense of psychodrama. It is the ultimate in fake it until you make it.  Tools, clothing, music, and atmosphere all make up things that contribute to psychodrama. Even ritual design, where things are a little more theatrical, add to it. Once you feel like you’re the bee’s knees of magic, then you will naturally progress towards a lower-tool, less flashy, less prep-heavy practice. But first, one must build confidence.

The point of psychodrama is to feel witchy as fuck. If you feel witchy, you are witchy, and everything is right with the world.

I super encourage that if you are having difficulty developing confidence in your practices, to develop a more dramatic practice. Mold your magic into an art. Do things that make you feel like the witch you know you are.

What do you think of smoke manipulation? My oc uses smoke manipulation magic. He may compress it and release it in blasts, but his main focus of attack is Smoke make. He can use different kinds, such as stink smoke, explosive or inflammable smoke, poisonous smoke, asphyxiant smoke, sleep smoke etc. However, it seems to take up a lot of his stamina and energy so he's really careful with it.

I don’t see any problem with that, but be careful on the “make” part.

Molding magic involves tangible elements like wood, ice, stone, etc.

You should probably just stick with the different smokes part rather than over-complicating things.

Magic that you would want

I am totally basing this on what kind of magic I had the most fun using in the Fairy Tail games for PSP |D

Molding/Creation Magic tops the list. I mean, your imagination’s the limit so you would be able to make ANYTHING out of whatever element you use. People always forget how genius Laki (the purple-haired megane girl from Fairy Tail) is with her Wood Make spells. And, of course, we have Ice Make. I swear, Lyon is THE character to play in ‘Fairy Tail: Zeref Awakens’. His range is so much better than Gray’s |D LYON > GRAY, JUST THIS ONCE M'KAY?

Secondly, Heavenly Body Magic. I think it’s brilliant, because it really shows that 'magic’ isn’t all about casting spells at a distance. Jellal’s 'Meteor’-spell pretty much just boosts his speed, but thanks to that, he hits HARD. Plus I have a lot of theories surrounding it, one of them being that it is related to the magic of Celestial Wizards. As far as we know, Jellal’s the only one using it.
Just to return to 'Zeref Awakens’ as well, his spells are IN-FUCKING-SANE. He can cast FUCKING 'ABYSS BREAK’. You know, the spell that Phantom Lord needed a huge Lacrima and 4 powerful mages to cast? Jellal can do that shit on his own. So bitch please |D Apart from Zeref, Jellal OWNS that game. First one where he’s playable too~ It’s epic. Try it. DO IT!

How I Would’ve Done the Grand Magic Games Arc

Well people seemed to like my how I would end Fairy Tail so I guess I’ll give you another thing I would’ve loved making alterations to. That being the Grand Magic Games arc. (Be warned as this is an arc it is a little long)

  • First off we are cutting out the time travel. No Future Rogue, No Future Lucy, and no dragon’s from the past. Not every arc needs to have the world in danger to be compelling.
  • Makarov died on Tenrou. That way we have reason for Mavis to come in and act as the new mentor figure.
  • The Fairy Tail team is getting a goddamn training arc. Look the GMG was the longest arc (before Alvarez) and if we cut the future stuff we should have those extra chapters contribute to something better.
  • No second origin. Hacking yourself is not interesting.
  • The A team is aware of the B team. (It was a stupid reveal and if your all working towards the same goal then it makes no sense not to tell them.)
  • So in this training arc each character gets their own way of training.
  • Mavis tells Elfman of a forest that Gildarts went through that full of beasts and he could go there get new souls
  • This way we see Elfman hunt the beasts he’ll use in the tournament. Hunting and taking over weretiger and lizardman
  • Mavis says this is good training for Elfman as not only is he getting new souls but when in a wilderness setting like the forest the body to move around and uses a mix of muscles. This way not only can he get souls but also he’ll increase his base states as well.
  • Lucy still trains with Capricorn but make it longer. Capricorn is the wisest spirit, having him mentor Lucy on the secrets on celestial magic is a good idea
  • Erza actually recalls her fight with Azuma and how he was able to counter all her variety with only one form of magic.
  • Erza decides that maybe she might need new armor, after all it’s been 7 years advancements had to have been made. (Also this way we can see her buy the piercing armor and Nakagami armor)
  • Also she asks to spar Mira because Erza is now using more variety in her fights. (I’ve written before how the progression of Erza’s powers should’ve been: 1 armor–> Variety of Armor–> Mixing weapons from other armors with other armors. This seems it’s still variety stage of that progression)
  • Wendy’s training is with Laxus. (I mean all of FT’s DS all are pals except for Wendy and Laxus)
  • Wendy realizes she needs strength training and can’t just be support so Laxus tells her to punch a tree and see how hard she punches.
  • Naturally it doesn’t leave that much of of a dent and Laxus tells her that her first thing is to take her emotion and put it behind her punches.
  • Wendy keeps trying but it’s pretty much to no avail, she gets upset thinking about losing Mystogan and cait shelter but also she thinks about Brain, Faust, and Zancrow with how they hurt people close to her and she gets frustrated think if only she was stronger that she could stop them on her own.
  • She then punches and starts cracking apart the tree from the punches coming from her anger till Laxus catches her fist.
  • He tells her the point was to put her emotions behind the punch, not let them overwhelm her. He tells her that she must fight with her convictions but angry will only drive you in the wrong direction. Laxus himself getting flashbacks over his rage induced goals.
  • Wendy agrees to what he says and they begin to train (There I just did character growth and expanded the bonds of FT members)
  • Then we get Grays training. And he believes he needs to become faster molding magic. So he focus’s on increasing his already high speed.
  • Mavis comes across Gray after some of his training and he states he’s made no progress and Mavis tells him maybe instead of focusing on all his shapes being made faster he should choose one mold and increase it’s speed.
  • Gray decides he’ll increase the speed it takes for Ice-Make sword. This way when he shows off Ice make unlimited we see his speed really iss different and why.
  • Mavis offers Cana a way to permanently master Fairy Glitter.
  • Also notice Mavis is actually being smart and helpful. like an actual mother/strategist.
  • Natsu and Gajeels training is first they have their wrists bound and are then launches with Erza’s giant armor so far into the deep forest.
  • The two have to first get along with each other but they just end up letting their egos keep getting in the way.
  • The first challenge they face is giant waterfall
  • Natsu says he can get over it easy and use his flames to increase his jump and says when he’s at the top he’ll pull up Gajeel by their bindings.
  • This plan fails as Natsu can’t make enough jump to make it to the top. So Gajeel says he’ll handle it and uses his Iron to pier the rock and climb the the waterfall. This fails too, as the waters are too fast and force him down.
  • They keep trying their methods and get nowhere till Natsu asks Gajeel how far can he extend his Iron pillars and so using a combo of Gajeel’s iron club to push them up and Natsu’s fire to propel them up they are able to clear the water fall.  
  • They decide to rest for the first night and in the morning they find a stream and see fish in it.
  • Gajeel has trouble catching them but Natsu doesn’t and while Gajeel is a little refusing to accept any of the food Natsu caught, Natsu tells them need to eat.
  • But the food attracts a Vulcan pack and while they beat them they find out there are more vulcans and they keep fighting and once they win they decide to move on and get out of they forest quickly.
  • They however are stopped by a sudden rain storm and flee to find shelter but those same vulcans followed they and attack again Natsu is having a difficult time in the rain but Gajeel is still able to push them all back and they find some shelter.
  • Gajeel sleeps but Natsu stands out in the rain trying to increase his fire but each time it’s doused.
  • Natsu then thinks he’s doing it the wrong way and instead of making the flame bigger, he focuses on just increasing the heat and slow the flame burn brights as the water evaporates,
  • They continue on but it’s then when they hear the sound of the same vulcan horde Gajeel says they’re going to fight again Natsu tells Gajeel to just run as they clear more ground and when they stop Gajeel questions what the hell is up with Natsu
  • Natsu says they couldn’t fight as they are hungry and sleep deprived.
  • Natsu remembers what Gildarts told him about overcoming weakness and the first step is to know your weakness.
  • Making it closer to the end of the forest they come across a huge monster that beats the 2 around Natsu keeps up most the fighting and finishes the beast off but collapses.
  • Gajeel see’s this and turns his arms to blades and starts scrapping them against each other to create sparks to feed Natsu.
  • They both stand up and make it to the end of the forest yelling that if this place couldn’t beat them down then either could any guild.
  • They return as we gets shots of other people finishing their training.
  • During all this there are scenes introducing characters like Lyon and Jura but also new ones. I think you can keep Sting and Rogue’s intro, use the Erza getting new armor to introduce Kagura like when she’s coming out of the blacksmith shop have her pass Erza, or have Bacchus drinking at the FT bar, or with Raven Tail show Ivan rallying his men for the GMG.)
  • The actual tournament begins with the sky labyrinth. Focus on it a little more as it is the prelim.
  • Also team B meets assembles and Gajeel questions that he, Juvia, Mira, and Laxus are there and Cana is the reserve so who’s the fifth man.
  • The fifth member is Bickslow, and let me explain I wouldn’t done Loke but it seems like cheating for a spirit that’s owned by another contestant and on another team to be a member. It wouldn’t be Levy as she is made out to still not be a stronger member and they already have a reserve. Out of the thunder god tribe Bickslow is the most untapped into, Freed’s the most tapped into (that’s not saying much) but also his dark ecriture and jutsu shiki seem as they’d take to long to make and would be a detriment, Evergreen I’ll be honest has really undefined magic so I see it hard to make it interesting.
  • Bickslow on the other hand has powers that can be used in a variety of purposes and as I said he’s the least tapped into.
  • Another change to teams: Sho and Wally are on mermaid heel and there’s no beth or arana. (OKay first off Hiro wanted to include them in the first place but felt like there were too many characters, so why not cut your loses as having more already established characters like sho and Wally so you have more time on new characters like Sabertooth, Kagura, Chelia etc. Also Mermaid Heel doesn’t have to be an all female guild.)
  • The first day can stay the same.
  • Lucy vs Flare keep it
  • Mirajane vs Jenny change it to an actual fight but have the reason Jenny lose is she’s a little vain with her take overs and Mira takes advantage of it. (There I made a way for there to be fanservice without any demeaning of the actual fight… yay)
  • Orga’s intro keep it
  • Bickslow vs Jura. Jura fights the same way and while Bickslow is aware he’ll lose he’s still fighting for Laxus. Take this time to dive into Build on why Bickslow follows Laxus.
  • When it looks like it’s over as Jura has Bickslow on the ground Bickslow stands up even though it seems impossible and the reason is Bickslow posessed his own soul.
  • Even though it’s damaged he can still move his body and at least go out with everthing. Plus it’s not impossible to believe he could possess his own soul as he can see them and we can all naturally look down at our bodies.
  • Spend more time on Raven tail and define that they just came to beat FT they don’t care to win.
  • Chariot: Change the FT teams with A to Elfman but B being Mira because then we can see satan soul’s feature of speed (Doesn’t have to fly and i’d assume the enhanced mode would increase speed)
  • Elfman vs Bacchus, don’t change it
  • Kagura vs Yukino, don’t change it
  • No Natsu v sabertooth and just introduce Jiemma as this dick and show off Minerva (Hell use it as good parallel to Ivan and how they are similar only Jiemma use strength as a reason why he’s an ass and Ivan just wants to hurt people out of vengence.)
  • Pandemonium, for the love of god don’t change it
  • MPF, keep it the same
  • Laxus vs Alexei needs more time and insead of Laxus clowing all of Raven Tail, just have it be Ivan and they lose by disqualify.
  • Wendy vs Chelia, don’t change it
  • Naval Battle, change the wings of love scene but Minerva can still win
  • The team merges but there is a penalty and they lose some of their points
  • Ichiya doesn’t beat Bacchus as it completely makes Elfman’s win seem weaker
  • Instead of Lyon and Yuka vs Millianna and Kagura, have it be Millianna and Sho because an issue with Kagura was too much overhype so this will space it out.
  • Natsu and Gajeel vs Sting and Rogue, I think you can keep most the back and forth the same but the ending with the uniso raid should be countered with a unison raid. (No minecart crap)
  • The Raid is Stronger as not only because of the shared conviction but also that whole training arc got Natsu and Gajeel closer and stronger
  • Sting can still blow a hole in Jiemma and Minerva can trick him with lector
  • Final day, It’s Erza, Laxus, Natsu, Gray and Gajeel. Mavis has her god damn mouth closed
  • Gray fights Rufus but Rufus gets caught up in using all these powers he’s memorized and Gray takes advantage using Ice make unlimited and beats him as Rufus let his arrogance and constant binding of moves makes him over look something basic like Gray taking a basic move and focusing only on that.
  • Erza fights Kagura and Erza uses more damn variety of armors against Kagura.
  • Minerva enters and yes no samurai pants still just Erza and her swapping out her armor and fighting her, like she should.
  • Orga faces Chelia and crushes her telling her about how God slayer are at the top of world and somebody like her is weak.
  • Chelia asks how can he tell what weakness and strength is and Orga says he killed the man who taught him god slaying because the student needed to prove he was stronger, and says Chelia doesn’t have that in her.
  • Laxus comes up and tells him he’s full of shit
  • Gajeel and Rogue fight with no shadow and just about Rogue’s fear of Gajeel and Gajeel pointing out that he’s not the same person back in phantom. Gajeel then shows that he’s glad there are other dragon slayers and eats the shadow.
  • Gets his dual mode and beats Rogue
  • Returning to Orga and Laxus’s fight they are throwing around lightning and destroying stuff and Orga tells Laxus he’s not reacting quick enough.
  • Orga isn’t thinking out his moves he’s letting his instinct fight but Laxus exploits this when Orga uses his black lightning canon and puts his all his magic behind it but when the attack is coming Laxus smirkks saying that instinct can always be trumped by expierence and Laxus eats the lightning
  • Laxus asked Natsu about god slayer magic and Natsu explained the trick he used on Zancrow.
  • Orga’s baffled by this but Laxus uses Roaring thunder on Orga
  • Orga tries to stand up but Jura knocks him out saying he would know when to quit
  • Cut to Gray who then takes Lyon with Gajeel’s help
  • CUt to the threesome and Kagura still loses to Minerva but now Erza says that she’ll handle this
  • Back to the fight with Jura and Laxus the fight is on a grand scale, lightning crashing down, Jura raising the ear and using every single rock to attack Laxus just blow for blow it’s a battle between titans
  • Jura says Laxus is running on low and Jura reveals a technique called “wrath born from earth” which is a giant rock assimilation that becomes massive hands and try to close together similar to a prayer and crush laxus
  • Laxus uses Lightning body to dodge the attack and propel towards Jura and uses the black lightning he ate and merge it with his dragon lightning and then try to crush Jura
  • Jura creates a massive rock wall to guard and sees that the dragon god lightning move didn’t pierce it
  • But Laxus reveals he used lightning body again and moved around the wall using this moment of Jura’s surprise Laxus uses Roar and not only fully hits Jura but also blasts Jura through his own Rock wall
  • Erza reveals Nakagami to Minerva and Nakagami doesn’t have the same power. It uses holy light as a weapon
  • Minerva laughs this off as her speed still can’t touch her thanks to territory but Erza reveals that not only does Nakagami produce holy light
  • It also manipulates light and Erza bends the setting sun’s rays and uses them like blades to attack Minerva and while Erza wins she passes out from exhaustion
  • The final fight with Sting, Gray tries to fight but Sting beats him, Gajeel tries and Sting beats him. Sting gloats saying lector has given him more strength that their bond makes him stronger
  • Natsu see’s Sting and challenges him
  • Natsu takes advantage of the first move and punches sting in the neck disorienting him as Natsu beats him around, but Sting regains his barrings and easily punches back Natsu
  • Sting wastes no time with fighting Natsu and is even in dragon force beating around Natsu.
  • Natsu feels each of Stings punches and they seem to have more weight behind them and Sting says it’s because of Lector each punch is stronger than the last time they fought
  • Natsu gets a few hits in but it’s one sided
  • Natsu thinks about the guild and how it was his home, how hard it was for his guild to be insulted everyday for 7 years, sad that Lucy’s in bed not fighting with them, and he then says everyone else finished their fights and he’ll finish his
  • Natsu goes for crimson lotus exploding flame blade and that pushes back Sting and Natsu charges forward coated in flames and tries to ounch Sting but Sting catches it similar to how Natsu caught his white drive punch
  • Natsu tries with his other fist but Sting catches it and says Natsu still won’t win getting up in his face as Sting is crushing Natsu’s fingers while they’re caught
  • Natsu then roars in front of Sting and charges at him while saying that bonds do make you stronger and each punch Sting threw was because he carried the conviction of his friend in them but Natsu says in fist he carries the conviction of every member of guild and their hopes.
  • He punches Sting into the ground and Sting is out
  • Sting gets lector back as the guild is titled the bestLector tells Sting it doesn’t matter he lost and that Sting looked cooler than he ever had beforeSting tops yukino as shes boarding a train to leave and on his hands and knees begs her to come back apologizing
    We cut to arcadios who’s walking to the king and tells him that the eclipse gate reacted slightly when the zodiac keys were in crocus. As it’s printed that FT is the strongest we finally see crime socirere and their new looks and Jellal says he’s proud of Erza and Ultear says the same of Gray. Then Meredy reminds them that only one head of balam is left and thats Tartaros (there I created intrigue for the next arcs and instead of the time lapse we just use the Eclipse gate to get to neo eclipse)

So that’s how I would’ve done GMG. Again I found this as a satisfying way to do it and hope you guys enjoy.

Acid Bathhouse

What you need to know: an elemental wizard living in an abandoned bath house has become mind controlled by a parasitic psyker, mold growing on her/his brain. This occurred during experimentation with acid mold/fungus or is a fluke occurrence. The psychic mold wants to destroy all life except mold/fungus and is forcing the wizard to unleash acidic mold/fungus onto towns and ecosystems eating everything away till there is only goo.

Premise: Acidic mold/fungus is growing on buildings/tree/vegetation, slowly dissolving the structure/plants till destruction or death occurs. It has become rampant and is spreading to neighboring towns through mold spores carried by the wind. The players can even come across dead wildlife layered in mold, their guts eaten away by acid.
Recently, it has even begun infecting people, their skin turns green and rots away as acid dissolves their bones.

Note: this is an acid disease that deals 1 damage a day at first, then progresses dealing more damage in shorter increments of time - 2 damage a day, 5 damage an hour, 10 damage a min, etc. It needs cure disease to cure.

Locals are desperate for answers and will pay everything they can if someone can find the source of this outbreak and put it to an end. This is a good chance to offer that magic item or information the players really want or need.

For added fun, you also have the ground water contaminated with acid, making it deadly to drink, giving the players only days to solve the problem before they die of thirst.

For additional challenge, you can have a ranger/druid order coming to burn everything to the ground and even kill the people to stop this acid mold from spreading, forcing players to both hold off druids and rangers while finding the source of the acid mold at the same time.


1 - in the middle of a lake/pond, a gray marble building rests atop a hill of green mold and mushroom patches.

  • A – lake/pond is acidic, dealing X D6 acid damage to anyone who enters.
  • There is an illusion of gold/glowing weapon at the bottom of the pond, placed there as a trap

  • B - hillside is layered in mostly harmless acid mold that eats away at the players boots slowly, but does little else
  • The acid mushroom patches spit acid, give the clusters a set of hit points and one spit attack for X D6 acid damage.

  • C - bathhouse is built of dissolving gray marble, eaten away by layers of green acid mold. However, it is sill structurally sound, nor is there any holes in the walls.

  • D - a marble walkway leads through rows of marble pillars and statues (local hero/legend of the past/god), they are caked in acid mold and already half-dissolved.
  • The front door is only scarps of dissolved iron with a blanket of mold covering the entrance.
  • If any player touches the mold, they take X D6 acid damage on touch and contract the acid disease.

2 - gray marble room contains 4 baths built into the floor. The floors and walls are layered in green acidic mold.

  • A - acid/mold fills the tubs. If players touch the contents, they receive X D6 acid damage and contract the acid disease

  • B - the acidic mold on the floor is much stronger than the mold outside. It eats players’ boots on contact in one round.
    Note: if players touch the acid, they receive X D6 acid damage and contract the acid disease. This forces the players to find a solution to cross the floor.

  • C - the front door is only scarps of dissolved iron with a blanket of mold covering the entrance. If any player touches the mold, they take X D6 acid damage on touch and contract the acid disease.

3 - gray marble room. In the center of the chamber stands a gray marble stature of a human woman in a dress with four faces, one facing each direction. There is no noticeable exit to the chamber.

  • A - when players enter the room, the statue spits acids from all four faces in a spray/cone attack
  • The acid dissolves 1 mundane item – clothing/backpack/weapon, etc for any player that gets hit and also receives X D6 acid damage
  • Once the players enter, the statue continues to spray every X rounds till the players leave- It draws from the pond outside and is virtually endless. The walls are acid resistent, similar to a wall of force.

  • B - one of the walls will slide open if a players tries to find secret doors or pry it open. This will lead to room 4
    Note: for added difficulty, you can have walls and floor layered in acidic mold as per room 2

4 - gray marble room with an iron door leading out. Basins are cut into the floor filled with acid. Large green tinted jars with glass toppers rest at the bottom.

  • A - basins are filled with acid, dealing X D6 acid damage upon touch

  • B - the jars are so tinted, they cannot be seen into and therefor must be opened
  • The contents inside contain the wizard’s treaures: coins/potions/scroll/magic items/etc

  • C - the door is locked and need to either be brute forced through or unlocked.

5 - a corridor of gray stone ends in a thick iron door with a small funnel jutting out from the center. There is a cupboard cut into the walls to the left of the door with 5 jars of acid on each of 2-5 shelves.

  • A - the door is at least a meter thick and 1000s of kilograms, making it almost impossible to open by brute strength. The players must pour the acids into the funnel from weakest to strongest or reverse to open the door

  • B - the jars containing acid can be color coded for ease: blue/green/yellow/orange/red, or all the same if you want to increase difficulty
  • There should be several sets so if the players screw up, they have several backup chances.
  • This puzzle should force the players to test the acid on equipment or themselves to find the strength of each.
    Note: the acid damage should be around d6 blue, 2d6 green, 3d6 yellow, 4d6 orange, 5d6 red
    For added difficulty. you can have walls and floor layered in acidic mold as per room 2

6 - a gray stone chamber with shelves and tables adorned in bottles of colored liquid, clay pots of mold and fungus and other various tools. In the back, a naked humanoid covered head to toe in green glowing fungus works tirelessly pouring liquid from bottles into the clay pots and only stops once the players step inside, and becomes aggressive. The creature is a human wizard of any level you deem fair, but also has a few upgraded abilities form the psyker mold.
Mundane weapons melt upon her/his flesh as the acids eats it away instantly.
All elemental spells now do acid damage, lighting bolt equals acid bolt, fire ball equals acid ball The wizard gets an acid vomit attack every 3 rounds, spraying the room in acid. It deals X D6 acid damage equal to half the dice of the wizards level plus dissolves up to 2 mundane items and infects the players with the acid disease.

Note: for added difficulty you can have a few acid mushroom patches growing in the room that spit acid or release acidic choking spores, dealing acid damage and stunning the player for a round.

When the wizard dies, he bursts in a radius, spraying all the players in acid, dealing X D6 acid damage, destroying 1 mundane item and infecting the players with the acid disease.

  • A - the potions found in this chamber can be magically useful as per potion chart or only regents for alchemy, its your choice.

End: the acid begins to dilute over time and without the psychic mold, the spores soon dies, no longer spreading. All infected parties with the acid disease sill need cure disease to be healed, however.

If you want to increase difficulty, you can have the acid still remain, forcing the players to find a way to neutralize it.

Maybe the psychic mold isn’t dead or the last of its kind and is in fact spreading, becoming a parasite to more people, turning them into acid mold zombies.

Maybe the magically engineered mold mutates to  more powerful versions or increases in potency, turning the entire ecosystem into a stew of acid.

For the next few and precious days left of training, Lorcan spent much of his time sketching diagrams, plans, and ideas in the dirt, often picking Elide’s brain for random details about Morath’s layout. It was day seven of their mission, the first week nearly over.

Currently, he was crouched in the dirt holding a sharpened stick, in front of the cave he and Elide had made their temporary home. A map lay unfurled in front of him, the corners of the yellowing parchment held by rocks to keep the map from being carried away by the wind.

An “X” on the map marked their current location; they were currently situated in the expansive plains of Fenharrow, right on the border of Adarlan. In order to reach Morath, first they needed to safely bypass the soldiers guarding Adarlan’s border. Then, on horseback they would make their way west towards Morath’s fortress. Lorcan estimated it would take them about three days of hard riding to reach the Acanthus River.

Once they crossed the river into the dense cover of Oakwald Forest, it would take another two days or so to pick their way through the forest and reach the outskirts of the castle… And they would be defending themselves from any manner of creature that might reside in the forest. Lorcan and Elide’s greatest difficulty would likely be stealth and deception as they navigated through the towering oaks.

Once they neared the castle, they would have to locate a vantage point to perform reconnaissance. From there, once he knew what they were facing, he’d decide the best course of action. He wondered how their luck would hold up, but then shook his head grimly and prepared for the worst. Like usual.

As he lowered his head to peer at the map once again, he instinctively moved to brush his hair back from his face before remembering he had cut it short. Well, Elide had also helped, with his instruction, since he couldn’t cut the hair on the back of his head by himself. His dark hair was only a few inches long now, much shorter compared to the shoulder-length it had been before.

Lorcan’s thoughts drifted to that moment, by the stream…

“Do you like my hair long?” Lorcan had asked Elide, quietly. He was sitting on the grassy streambed, an arm propped up on his bent knee. Water dripped from his short, spiky hair, having just washed his head in the bubbling stream. Elide cocked her head at him, a smile dancing on her lips as she handed him the white towel she was holding.

“Why do you ask?”

“No reason.” Lorcan shrugged. He wasn’t sure why he asked, really.

She looked at him through her eyelashes thoughtfully. “It’s your hair. I don’t particularly care what you do with it. And… I think it looks good either way.”

Lorcan’s Fae ears perked at that.

“So what you’re saying is, I’m so good-looking that it doesn’t matter what my hair looks like?” Raising a hand to block the sun, he smirked and squinted up at Elide’s suddenly flustered expression.

Of course, she started to blush. “That- that’s not what I said. Ugh, I was just trying to be nice!” She made to storm off, but Lorcan instinctively reached for her hand. Even though she was joking, it made his chest tighten to see her turn her back on him.

Surprised, Elide turned. He knew she really wasn’t all that mad, but he still rubbed gentle circles on the back of her hand with his calloused thumb.

“Thank you for your help,” he said, smiling and inclining his head slightly. Her cheeks continued to heat, but there was nothing she could do so she lifted her chin.

“I was being honest. Your hair does look good, long or short… And it might help us blend in better, you know, when we try to lie and bluff our way across borders and stuff.” She smiled back, stepping over to block the sunlight from shining on Lorcan’s face. He lowered his hand and blinked a few times, eyes adjusting. “I think… if you grow it out long again, I’d like to try braiding it.”

Lorcan raised an eyebrow. “Braid my hair?” Elide couldn’t help but laugh at the expression on his face.

“Just like, little braids, you know. I’ll show you sometime, with my own hair.” She smiled at the skeptical look on his face.

Lorcan cocked his head and took a moment to appreciate Elide. The sunlight illuminated the dark chestnut strands of her hair, and a shadow fell across her face, her high cheekbones, her delicate lips. Gods, had anyone ever told her before? That she was beautiful? Elide had been locked up in a tower since she was a child with no one for company but her nursemaid, and now she was grown and strong and free…

She was beautiful, from every inch and mile of her pale, unblemished skin to all her scars from the chains and shackles that held her to the ground. And she deserved someone to tell her that she was beautiful, every day.

“You’re beautiful,” Lorcan murmured. Elide’s mouth opened in surprise, and then clamped shut as she averted her gaze. He tilted his head to try and get her to look at him.

Lorcan never claimed to be a romantic, and truthfully, he had never done this before, but he was sure of what he said.

“Oh! I uhh… Tha- thanks, but where did that come from?” Elide shuffled her feet and nervously looped a strand of hair behind her ear. She raised her eyes to meet his, but then quickly looked away, that rosy tint still staining her fair cheeks.

Lorcan shrugged. “Because you are. And… I thought you should hear it.” Unused to displaying any sort of affection, he felt somewhat awkward but he must’ve said something right because her deep brown eyes softened like chocolate melting in the sun.

A swallowtail flying overhead chirruped and called to its mate, snapping Lorcan out of his reverie; he needed to focus. Frowning, he stared at the map again, as if it could tell him something he didn’t already know. Lorcan didn’t like their odds, but the queen’s court couldn’t risk Duke Perrington and Vernon getting any stronger. He had to hope their element of surprise would hold out for long enough.

The lines on his tan forehead creased as he contemplated their situation. Lorcan recalled his conversation with Rowan – had it been just last week? – he and Rowan had both known that this mission would take longer than ten days, the initial amount of time Lorcan proposed. Rowan had doubted that they could pull it off, but he’d still allowed them two weeks. He knew that if anyone could pull it off, it would be Lorcan.

Two weeks gave Elide and Lorcan time to train, and enough time to travel safely – as safely as anyone could – into Morath.

Choose Your Illusion: Psychotropic Fungi Spores, Visions, Hauntings, and Ghosts

Could psychotropic mold spores lurking in decrepit old buildings be the root cause of ghost sightings? In this story from The Daily Mail, science, mycology, magic, and myth collide in a bubbling cauldron of epic proportions, and I couldn’t be more excited! As if I need any more convincing that fungi are the masked & cloaked puppeteers pulling the strings of human history, researchers from Clarkson University are implicating the inhalation of toxic mold as a probable cause for visions, hallucinations, hauntings, and paranormal activity in some of New York’s most notorious haunted houses. 

Researchers will be measuring air quality in several purportedly haunted locales across New York State, in order to deduce if there is a correlation between the airborn mold spores and brain inflammation. They will be comparing samples taken from several buildings where ghost sightings have been reported with samples taken from ho-hum homesteads with nary a ghost in sight, to see if there is a difference in the types of fungi between those two locales. “Experiences reported in many hauntings are similar to mental or neurological symptoms reported by individuals exposed to toxic molds,” said Professor Shane Rogers of Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. “Psychoactive effects of some fungi are well-known, whereas the effects of others such as indoor molds are less researched. Although allergy and asthma symptoms and other physiological effects are well established, there has long been controversy over the effects of indoor mold exposure on cognitive and other functioning of the brain. Reports of psychiatric symptoms including mood swings, hyperactivity, and irrational anger, as well as cognitive impairment are prevalent among those exposed to molds.”

No stranger to the far-reaching, miasmic, and often nebulous symptoms of brain inflammation, I can testify to the pervasive power of the altered states one can sink into under the right duress. According to the article, preliminary laboratory research on this subject is emerging that “supports brain inflammation and memory loss in mice exposed to Stachybotrys charatarum, a common indoor air mold, as well as increased anxiety and fear.” Coupled with the subconscious suggestibility that permeates one’s experience in an infamously supernatural locale, we have an environment rife with illusory impressionability for spectral enchantment.

A friend of mine was reflecting on the widespread co-opting of mystical experience by the scientific community, and wondered aloud if it is truly wise and prudent to dismiss something that may be magical as a construct of scientific phenomena. “Too much reality ruins the new eyes of a child,” they ruminated. While I agree, I also believe that fungi and science are inherently magical, and the more mycology I study, the more slackjawed, wide eyed, and agape with magic that I am. Where science and magic intersect is where Botanarchy dwells, and it is in this liminal slipstream where I prefer to hang my hat.

I’ve actually tried this before! It does work! It’s called model magic, it’s made by crayola. It’s air-dry clay. It’s not gonna be the exact same as using daiso clay, but it does make pretty good butter slime! It’s probably best to add even amounts of slime and clay and adjust from there if needed. I just used plain old slime, nothing special, but you can try your own things! Hope this helped!

A Fairytale and a Half

This too so long my lord I wish I wasn’t so much of a procrastinator.

Summary: Prince Philip has a fairytale life, right down to the big quest to save the True Love he’s never met from a witch in a big scary forest. He’s never been outside the castle before, let alone a forest, so when it becomes apparent that Dan - a farm boy living in the middle of nowhere - knows the forest inside out, he tries to persuade him to be a guide so Phil won’t die before doing whatever it was he was meant to do in there. AKA the fairytale au no one asked for but I delivered.

Once upon a time there was a kingdom.

There’s always a kingdom. There were others, too, but they’re not important yet.

This kingdom had kind, humble rulers - the people were happy, taxes were low and there hadn’t been a war for as long as anyone could remember.

This is a fairytale, so of course most rulers are kind and humble and perfect- but their kids aren’t.

The young princes and princesses had been born with a silver spoon in their mouths and servants to hang on their every word.

An old lady, sitting in her ramshackle house on the edge of town, sighed. She knew that without any trials, without the witches and monsters and quests, the fairytale wouldn’t survive. It would fall apart under the rule of those who don’t know what they have.

She was tired though - had the spinning wheel thing really been fifty years ago? - but what you gotta do, you gotta do.

The old witch hadn’t called forth any sort of magic in years. Not since her skin was smooth and pale, since her horns stood tall and proud. Once she uttered the first syllables of a spell, she knew that’s what her appearance would become again. Pale green skin, eyes like death, strong bones and long limbs. Such was the curse.

She got off her chair, spitting angrily about royal prats and evil magic. Breathing in deeply, she relished the feeling of her vertebrae clicking back into alignment and her magic - dark, horrible stuff with a tar-like thickness that she hadn’t realised she missed - flowing into her with renewed vigour, along with all the hate and anger that made her remember why she wanted to kill the royal family in the first place.

She forgot how painful teleporting was. It only lasted a split-second - if that - but she felt it all, hardly breathing and just feeling.

The heavy blackness lifted off her shoulders and cleared away from her eyes. She breathed. She gasped. She looked around, and nostalgia struck her like lightning.

The big, scary witch had crashed a party.

Again.

Memories - Fifteen

At fifteen years old, Parrish Stilinski-Hale – young, overly proud of his newly emerged spark, and too much in love with a pretty girl – spent over a month researching tricks and spells that would allow him to spend more time with her. His papa was overprotective (let’s capital, bold, underline, and try that again: Overprotective) about the idea of him dating in a way Parrish couldn’t really begin to understand, and even his dad couldn’t pull him out of the compulsive “when hell freezes over” scowl he’d gotten as soon as Parrish had mentioned the senior girl from the lacrosse team who’d asked him to the homecoming dance last fall. At fifteen. As a sophomore. The whole thing had pretty much been the talk of the school.

But then Parrish had come home and his papa had clenched his jaw, tensing up in a way he usually only did when the pack was being threatened, and shut the whole thing down before it started.

“Come on, Derek,” His dad had said, before Parrish stalked out of hearing range. “You know how young I was when I fell for you.”

“And you know how young I was when I fell for Kate.”

Which had fallen from his papa’s lips like a dropped grenade and seemed to wound each of them in equal measure, setting off a week-long cold war of overly polite comments and secretly pining glances that Parrish never wanted to witness again. His dads fought, alright, they didn’t do polite.

Dating was a taboo subject in the house, apparently.

So Parrish had very pointedly not told either of them when he’d started seeing Theresa three months later, and thus the great spark-fueled subterfuge began.
