modern theory

SU theory: the gems were synthetically engineered and have destroyed their makers

Since the gems are inorganic rocks becoming sentient on their own would be highly unlikely in nature (if we’re going for realism), but non-carbon based self-replicating inventions would be ideal for prospering long term in the wide universe- and taking it over

theory: the gems were engineered by a separate organic alien life to do just that

support: logic, and also the fact the newly presented homeworld is highly reminiscent of the classic sci-fi Blade Runner aesthetic

as such, Blade Runner is a dystopian film/novel where they do just that, stronger synthetic humanoids destroy their creators

We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn’t, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares.

But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell’s dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley’s vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.

What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny “failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions.” In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us.

This book is about the possibility that Huxley, not Orwell, was right.

All The Little Things - Part 1

This is my first fanfiction, so please read through it and give me constructive feedback! Main ships: Feysand, Nessian, Elriel.

I’ll try to update every Saturday, but no promises. Tell me if your reading this, and I’ll tag you on my next chapter.

Feyre works at a coffee shop, not for the money, but because she enjoys it. Why would she need money anyway, when her boyfriend, Tamlin, works for one of the most global, most successful companies, Hybern? But Tamlin has a bad temper and an abusive nature. She longs to get away from him and get a Fine Arts degree at Prythian University. It seems impossible to escape him – that is, until a certain handsome stranger walks into her life.

“Hey, what would you like today?” I asked the man behind the counter. He paused, and his dark, violet eyes scanned the chalkboard menu.

“A white chocolate moccha, chai tea, vanilla frappuccino, caramel macchiato and a latte, please.” I was momentarily shocked before I realised he was ordering for his friends at the table, too. There were two more men with black hair like his and two women (one short, with black hair and another tall, with golden blonde hair). The man’s eyes twinkled with amusement at my temporary shock, the lights like tiny stars.

You don’t have time for this!

“I’ll bring them to your table, shall I?”

“Yes, please.” His voice was educated and refined. I found myself suddenly conscious of my rural, lower class accent.

“Thank you.” I turned to prepare the drinks. For some reason, his appearance triggered hidden memories of my childhood – good ones. I remembered when my family had camped outside in the woods, and we had tried to spot constellations. After a while, we gave up and just stared at the beautiful night sky.

Out of the window, I spotted Tamlin’s Maserati roll to a stop in a parking space. As I poured the drinks into cups, I quickly texted him.

Last orders.

I arranged the drinks on a tray and hurried to the table. Normally, I would read out each order and personally hand them over, but I was in a rush. In my haste, I banged the tray on the table.

Wincing, I apologised, but the people smiled reasurringly at me. Huh. Some of the customers would yell at me for half an hour then demand to see the manager. “I’m in a bit of a rush today.”

Alis walked through the door and I gave a sigh of relief.

“Alis! Help me out, will you?”

“Course.” As I passed her, I slipped my apron over her curly, brown hair and handed her the reciept.

“Table 16.”

“Good luck for the interview, Feyre.”

“Thanks,” I called back as I climbed into my boyfriend’s car.

I gave Tamlin a quick kiss and settled back into the my fabric seat.

“How was work?” he asked as he hit the accelerator. His green eyes slid to me quickly, then back to the road. I could just see them beneath the curtain of golden hair.

“The usual,” I sighed. “What about Hybern? How’s the deal goin?”

Hybern was the company Tamlin worked for. They were always in competition with another company, Velaris. Although Velaris was insignificant in size when compared to Hybern, the CEO of our company had a personal argument with the CEO of Velaris.

A couple of weeks ago, Hybern had come into lots of new money. They had enough to buy Velaris, but the CEO was giving them trouble.

“Don’t worry about that.”

“I said, don’t worry about that.” His voice held a definite air that told me this conversation was over.

But I knew the deal was giving him a lot of stress. He locked himself in the study for hours, stayed up all night and drank more. He was shutting me and Lucien out.

I clenched my teeth. If only he would listen, I knew I could help.

My anger disappeared and was replaced by a fluttering of nerves as I beheld the building before me: Prythian University. It was one of the most prestigious universities in the country.

Deep breaths.

I wanted to get a degree in Fine Art. I had sent the university my personal statement and links to my online portfolio. They had sent a letter a few days later, asking me to come for the interview.

Today was the interview.

I picked up my artwork folder and Tamlin smiled at me. Any trace of his temper was gone. His mood swings were becoming more frequent and sudden. It almost scared me.

I kissing him and got out of the car.

“I love you.”

His reply was immediate. “I love you too. Good luck.”

With a final exhale, I stepped through the doors of the university.

Between 1900 and 1910 Matisse was apart of an artist group known as the Fauves (which is French for “wild beast”) which valued color, emotion and painterly techniques over realistic representations. Although the Fauve movement was short lived it is believed that some of Matisse’s best works were created during this period. Here is his piece, Harmony in Red (ca.1908).

The Rules of Chopper Base

Seeing as it’s gone next week, have a few silly thoughts about life on Atollon!

The Rules of Chopper Base - by Phoenix Squadron

  • We only have 1 training A-Wing, so be careful with it!
  • Don’t claim the krykna ate your mission briefing notes - they can’t get past the perimeter!
  • Don’t leave your helmets lying around
    • It’s not regulation, and Lieutenant Bridger will steal them.
  • Don’t ever claim a maneuver is impossible while Phoenix leader is in earshot.
  • Don’t ask if Phoenix Leader and the Jedi are going to get married
    • Don’t ask when Phoenix Leader and the Jedi are going to get married
    • Don’t ask if Phoenix Leader and the Jedi are already married
  • Don’t play chance cubes with Lieutenant Bridger.  He always wins.  Cheater.
    • No-one can prove anything! - Ezra
  • You are no longer allowed to go on missions myself or commander Sato haven’t assigned.  Especially any “supply raids”.  We do not need more alcohol. - Phoenix Leader
  • Asking Hobbie “what’s your actual job?” stopped being funny after the second time Lieutenant Bridger made that joke.  Please stop.
  • Never ask Lieutenant Wren about art.  I will never be able to forgot early-modern colour theory now!
    • I thought you said you were interested in my artwork? - Sabine
  • Don’t bother complaining to Commander Sato or Phoenix leader if that kriffing astromech electrocutes you.  Apparently it means “he likes you” or something.
  • Don’t try and flirt with either Lieutenant Bridger or Lieutenant Wren.  You will be reassigned to somewhere horrible.
    • Ezra is 17!  What is wrong with you all?
  • Don’t insult AP-5 where he can hear you.  He’ll stock your A-Wing with the worst ration bars.
  • Stop asking  Lieutenant Bridger what happened to his promotion.  It makes him look like a kicked loth-kitten.
  • The dokma are cute.  Yes, fine.  Now can we please talk about something else?
  • Our hidden base is very impressive.  Do Not boast about it over the comms!  What is wrong with you all?
  • Yes, Lieutenant Wren is amazing at everything, but don’t be jealous.
    • Did you write this, Sabine? - Ezra

Dark Matter Theory Triumphs In Sweeping New Study

“It’s a revolutionary breakthrough that dark matter can reproduce both the relationships between luminosity and galactic speeds and the stellar mass function in galaxies simultaneously, as this new study accomplishes for the first time. By incorporating advanced techniques and more detailed physical models and the interplay between different components, relations that has only been observed, never explained, are finally seen to emerge. If we can throw our cosmic ingredients into a simulation and get out the Universe exactly as we observe it, that’s as big a success for our theories and models as one can ask for.”

On the largest scales, dark matter has been undoubtedly the most successful theory in modern cosmology for explaining a huge variety of observations. From the motions of galaxies in clusters to the separation of mass and light when they collide, from the correlations between galactic positions to the fluctuations in the CMB, from the bending of starlight to the formation of large-scale structure, it’s clear that the Universe needs dark matter. But individual galaxies have always been the most difficult test for dark matter. In particular, there have been empirical correlations – or relationships between two different observables – that have never had an underlying explanation successfully presented. One of the most difficult has been the Tully-Fisher relation, which relates the luminosity to the rotational speed of spiral galaxies. But a new simulation, at long last, has finally cracked that nut by incorporating not only gravitation and dark matter, but the relationship between baryons and dark matter.

The way a galaxy forms stars over its history matters tremendously for what we get today, and by simulating it all together, it adds up to one stunning conclusion: success for dark matter in an entirely new way!

I present this video as a must watch for casual Magic Players everywhere.

Modern and Standard deck prices are outrageous.  Unless you can only get true fulfillment from competitive magic, or you have a passionate interest in speculation and finance, you will suffer the feel bads if you try to play that game.  The sad truth is that competitive Magic drives demand and therefore prices, and without supply side adjustments, those prices will stay high, and continue to rise.

But all is not lost.  We don’t have to play that game.  If you’ve ever complained about the crazy cost of Modern, or Standard rotations that trivialize your favorite deck that you put so much time and money into.  If you’re tired of the diminishing returns of rogue deck building in competitive formats.  And most of all, if you’re tired of complaining, waiting for Wizards to fix things, then stand up, and take matters into your own hands.

SEALED IS THE ANSWER.  You support WOTC directly, who makes this wonderful game we all enjoy.  You have an even playing field, that still respects skill.  Build your collection while enjoying the game.  Build your deck without having to chase rares or mythics.

Prerelease is already the best Magic event for Casual Players.  Why leave it at that?  Make FNM Great Again!  Don’t let something like Copycat Combo ruin Magic for you.  Don’t let the exorbitant prices of Modern discourage you from meaningful competitive play!  Sealed has something for everyone.

At the end of the day, we all just want to sit down and play Magic.  Whether at your LGS, or around the kitchen table, Sealed IS the answer.  Go in on a booster box with friends.  If someone wants to join in, all they need is six boosters.  The customizability, affordability, and balance of this format are its strengths.

When I go to see a movie, or buy a video game, I am not paying hundreds of dollars.  I shouldn’t have to in order to play Magic.  Opt out of the destructive debates over Standard and Modern.  Choose the format that is self regulated, and most prioritized by WOTC.  Play Sealed.

@flavoracle, @vorthosjay, @the-burnished-hart, @sarpadianempiresvol-viii, @sarkhan-volkswagen, @askkrenko, @everyone else…

ya’ll really logging onto tumblr in 2017 and throwing around slurs and literally decade old homophobic bullshit, comparing lesbians to straight men, trying to say gay people are predatory, grouping us in with literal pedophiles, ya’ll come in here telling us to prioritize cishets and demonizing gay people. you aren’t progressive, and hating gay people under the guise of radicalism isn’t new. what really gets me though is ya’ll act as though what you’re doing is helping the lgbt community?? you’re not making this a safe space, you’re being homophobic and transphobic and you’re too fucked up on some “modern queer theory” bullshit to realize it. Guess what, Janet, we’re fucking oppressed and its not a fucking theory.
