He dueled him for many a long minute, and then trapping him at the end of a gantry, removed his hand from his wrist. Luke was surprised, but said not a word beyond his cry of pain. After a silence of several minutes, Vader came towards him in an agitated manner, and thus began,
“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to offer you a place at my side to throw down the Emperor and reign over this galaxy.”
Luke’s astonishment was beyond expression. He stared, coloured, doubted, and was silent. This Vader considered sufficient encouragement, and the avowal of all that he felt immediately followed. He spoke well, but there were feelings besides those of the heart to be detailed, and he was not more eloquent on the subject of tenderness than of ambition.
“You do not yet realize your importance, and only now have begun to discover your power. Join me and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy.”
In spite of his deeply-rooted dislike, Luke could not be insensible to the compliment of such a Sith Lord’s offer, though his intentions did not vary for an instant. He attempted to compose himself to answer Vader with patience as per the training Yoda had attempted to, but the pain from the end of his arm and the longstanding list of offenses against his friends gave Luke great trouble in this manner, and he replied thusly,
“In such cases as this, it is, I believe, the established mode to express a sense of obligation for the sentiments avowed. It is natural that obligation should be felt, and if I could feel gratitude, I would now thank you. But I cannot – I have never desired your good opinion, and you have certainly bestowed it most unwillingly. I will never join you.”
Darth Vader, who was leaning against the railing of the gantry with the gaze of his mask fixed on Luke’s face, seemed to catch his words with no less resentment than surprise. His fist tightened with anger, and the disturbance of his mind was visible in every movement. He was struggling for the appearance of composure, and would not speak, till he believed himself to have attained it. The pause was to Luke’s feelings dreadful. At length, in a voice of forced calmness, he said,
“And this is all the reply which I am to have the honour of expecting! I might, perhaps, wish to be informed why, with so little endeavour at civility, I am thus rejected. But it is of small importance.”
“I might as well enquire,” replied Luke, “why, with so evident a design of offending and insulting me, you chose to hand me this offer after removing my own? Was not this some excuse for incivility, if I was uncivil? But I have other provocations. You know I have. Had not my own feelings decided against you, had they been indifferent, or had they even been favourable, do you think that any consideration would tempt me to accept the offer of the Sith Lord, who has been the means of hunting my friends across the galaxy?”
He paused, and saw with no slight indignation that Vader was listening with an air which proved him wholly unmoved by any feeling of remorse.
“Can you deny that you have done it?” Luke asked.
With assumed tranquillity he then replied, “I have no wish of denying it. I have done everything in my power to crush the Rebellion and rejoice in my successes.“
Luke disdained the appearance of noticing this civil reflection, but its meaning did not escape, nor was it likely to conciliate, him.
"But it is not merely this affair,” Luke continued, “on which my dislike is founded. Long before it had taken place, my opinion of you was decided. Your character was unfolded in the recital which I received many months ago from Obi-Wan Kenobi. On this subject, of my father, what can you have to say?”
“You took an eager interest in that Jedi’s explanations,” said Vader in a less tranquil tone, and with a heightened colour.
“Who that knows what his understanding of the Force has been, can help feeling an interest in his worldview?”
“The Force” repeated Darth Vader contemptuously; “yes, the Light Side of the Force is great indeed.
I am convinced in my knowledge that Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.”
“He told me enough,” cried Luke with energy. “You have long ago killed him!”
“No” said Vader, as he leaned across the railing towards Luke, “I am your father. Examine your feelings; you know it to be true.”
Luke felt himself growing more ashamed at this revelation, and despite his utmost efforts, a distraught denial left his mouth.
“You can destroy the Emperor,” continued Vader. “He has forseen this, and this is the estimation that I hold you in: it is your destiny. If you would but join me, together we can rule the galaxy as father and son. Come with me; it is the only way.”
Trapped as he was on the end of the gantry, it was clear what decision lay ahead for Luke, and again his intentions remained unaltered. With a calm descending upon him, Luke spoke with composure when he said,
“You are mistaken, Vader, if you suppose that your entrapment of me will mean the entrapment of my loyalty. From the very beginning, your actions, impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your murders, and your imprisonment and torture of a young woman, were such as to form so immoveable a dislike that I had not known you a day before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to call father.”
To conclude his statement, and provide great shock to Vader, Luke stepped off the gantry.
@epix-elle, this is the result of your “Darcy Vader” comment
In 2013, acclaimed ballerina Wendy Whelan underwent reconstructive surgery that left her hobbled, both physically and emotionally. For Whelan, it wasn’t just her career with the New York City Ballet that was at stake; it was also her artistic voice.
“It was terrifying to lose that mode of expression that I was so in touch with, that I so loved, that I so cultivated for my whole entire life,” she says.
Whelan, who was 46 at the time, feared that she would never dance again. But after months of rehabilitation and physical therapy, she returned briefly to the company she had danced with for more than three decades.
Whelan took her final bow with the New York City Ballet in October 2014 — an experience she likens to shedding skin. “Everything I experienced as an adult happened as a member of New York City Ballet,” she says. “To leave it as an adult [after] going into it as basically a child was scary, really scary.”
Now, nearly three years after leaving ballet, Whelan continues to perform contemporary dance. She says she feels liberated in her new life: “I’ve been strapped in — physically strapped in to pointe shoes, strapped into a leotard and tights, my hair’s been strapped up — for my whole entire life. … I was terrified to be unconstricted, and now I don’t know another way I’d rather be.”
The documentary Restless Creature chronicles Whelan’s injury, recovery and final performance with her company.
“Though it is often claimed that the left stands for equality while the right stands for freedom, this notion misstates the actual disagreement between right and left. Historically, the [right-winger] has favored liberty for the higher orders and constraint for the lower orders. What the [right-winger] sees and dislikes in equality, in other words, is not a threat to freedom but its extension. For in that extension, he sees a loss of his own freedom. ‘We are all agreed as to our own liberty,’ declared Samuel Johnson. ‘But we are not agreed as to the liberty of others: for in proportion as we take, others must lose. I believe we hardly wish that the mob should have liberty to govern us.’ Such was the threat Edmund Burke saw in the French Revolution: not merely an expropriation of property or explosion of violence but an inversion of the obligations of deference and command. ‘The levellers,’ he claimed, ‘only change and pervert the natural order of things.’
Conservatism, then, is not a commitment to limited government and liberty…These may be the byproducts of conservatism, one or more of its historically specific and ever-changing modes of expression. But they are not its animating purpose…[It] is impelled by a more elemental force – the opposition to the liberation of men and women from the fetters of their superiors, particularly in the private sphere. Such a view might seem miles away from the libertarian defense of the free market, with its celebration of the atomistic and autonomous individual. But it is not. When the [right-]libertarian looks out upon society, he does not see isolated individuals; he sees private, often hierarchical, groups, where a father governs his family and an owner his employees.
“What is an interception?” It’s called an interception when an entire sign is contained in a house, falling between two cusps rather than on either of them. This is what it looks like.
When one sign is intercepted, its sister sign will be as well; in this chart, the sign of Cancer is intercepted in the seventh house (between the 7th & 8th house cusps) so Capricorn is also intercepted, in the first house (between the 1st & 2nd house cusps). The cusps end up landing on the signs on either side.
Planets can be intercepted as well; an intercepted planet is simply a planet posited in an intercepted sign.
“What is a duplication?” Duplications are caused by interceptions. A sign is duplicated when two house cusps fall within it. This is what a duplicated sign looks like (from the same chart as the screenshot above).
Again, when a sign is duplicated, so will its sister sign be. In this chart, Gemini is duplicated on the 6th & 7th house cusps, and Sagittarius is duplicated on the 12th & 1st house cusps. This is because the houses & signs form axes.
Interceptions & duplications cannot happen in equal house systems.
“What do interceptions & duplications mean?” They indicate an immense imbalance of energy. The intercepted signs are buried, repressed, overshadowed, and basically not allowed or able to operate normally in the chart. On the other hand, duplicated signs work on overdrive & typically have “too much” influence. Both of these things are very unhealthy.
“What do intercepted planets mean?” Intercepted planets are hindered, internalized, weakened, and (again, like intercepted signs) basically not allowed or able to operate normally in the chart. They have to be reached & brought out, like retrograde / 12th house planets in a way. They’re trapped because their mode of expression is stifled.
“How do I regain balance & heal my intercepted signs / planets?” This is a very personal process that no stranger can help you through without analyzing your natal chart as a whole. Remember to use common sense; look at what the sign/planet in question is associated with, locate the core of the problem, and make the healthy decisions you feel will solve it.
“Once the imbalance & issues of interceptions / duplications are resolved, where would the intercepted signs manifest, since they have no influence over the areas of life represented by the houses?” They would manifest through the placement of their ruling planet, and possibly as a shadow of the house they’re intercepted in (behind the influence of the sign on the cusp). When the function of the sign is healed, its energy will come through no matter what, so you just have to look for it.
“What if the ruling planet of the intercepted sign is very strong?” It may be relatively easier for you to bring it out, because you have an equivalent energy to channel it through. Or the interception may not be much of a problem at all – the ruling planets function similarly to their signs, so it may work itself out naturally. It depends on the rest of the chart.
“What if the ruling planet of a duplicated sign is intercepted or weak?” If it is weak, there will be less of a problem, because the sign will not be as consuming & will have limitations. If it is intercepted, it will be even more of a confusing experience, because the excessive expression of the sign will not have a clear course & the native may end up subconsciously trying to repress it entirely or inflate it further. It also depends on the rest of the chart.
“What if the house associated with the intercepted sign is strong?” It may increase the influence of the archetype, or have no effect. (Note: it will not increase the sign’s energy, only the power/prominence of its archetype.)
“What if the house associated with the duplicated sign is weak?” It will likely not have a notable effect.
the leo can have two modes of expression - a very mature, martyred, and generous leo who is on a streak of world salvation and rule. there is also the younger version of themselves, one who delights in everything self amusing and colourful. and there is the shadow leo, when the sun sets. in the right weather, every old hurt or abandonment can ache like a broken bone
Ever been confused about Draconic Charts? We all have been as there is very little information out there about them. The Draconic chart is the soul chart and for those who believe in Esoteric Astrology indicates past life tendencies relived early in life. The basic nature of a Draconic Chart shows a summary or who you were and how you acted up until the teenage years. The draconic chart is the normal chart realigned with north node at 0 degrees Aries. It is re-aligned based on the sign and degree your natal north node is in.
A basic example of how a Draconic chart works would be natal North Node in Cancer 0 degrees shifting all of the signs 90 degrees in the Draconic chart. This happens quite simply because to get to 0 degrees Aries for the Draconic chart, every planet is shifted 90 degrees to get to the zero point. So this shows a very important factor; only planets in signs change in Draconic charts and the aspects completely stay the same.
One must remember the birth chart is a snapshot of what we are growing into in this lifetime. The planets in signs (and ascendant) show the basic qualities of how we acted up through our teenage years. You may create a synastry chart between your Draconic and Natal chart to see how your inward planetary energies between youth and adulthood assist or hinder one another. This method (if you so believe) can show whether you are continuing a theme of a past life or growing away from who you were.
Due to the basic nature of a Draconic Chart it is imperative to understand the degrees of angles stay the same as they are in the natal chart. The only thing that can change is the sign of the actual planets and the ascendant in the Draconic chart. This is because the are based on the degree of the Node in the natal chart and “Shift accordingly”.
Examples of how North Node natally in the signs play out Draconically :
(Important! The Draconic ascendant must stay in the same elemental family of your natal Ascendant. If the degrees of the North Node and Ascendant natally cause your draconic ascendant to shift to a different element than your birth ascendant new conditions are created. In this case I suggest going to the bottom of this post and reading about how Ascendant’s aspecting one another in Draconic/Natal synastry alter the picture.)
If the North Node is in a Fire sign of Aries, Leo or Sagittarius it increases the chances that how you acted in your teenage years carries through to adulthood. Why? This is because when the Draconic Chart is re-aligned all of the planets in signs will be in a trine-like configuration with the natal planets. They will naturally create someone who may act the same throughout life. This may indicate reliving conditions of a past life so you can carry on something you already started.
this sounds excessive and redundant unless it serves the story but
PLEASE, if there’s a chance, put a A FLASHBACK OF YOUNG POIROT IN EITHER A POLICE OR ARMY UNIFORM in the Murder on the Orient Express movie. ♥ Kenneth Branagh would make it look extra dashing!
Also a mention of his “wild youth” and career in the Belgian police force, and maybe a show of his fighting skills we never ever get to see in other incarnations, even though the character’s an ex policeman, ex Secret Service and war veteran! Ken already pointed out his Poirot will be more agile than previous versions. From what I could gather via interviews, I think there will be a scene of him at least defending himself against someone.
In the novel Poirot’s at a hotel before he goes on the Orient Express, he
books “a room with a bath” which he never gets to enjoy, but the movie is its
own thing, Ken’s own interpretation, so why not give us sides of Poirot we’ve been deprived of so far? The hotel room scene would be the
perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of Poirot’s war wound. Bath = skin = wound. A little promo shot of him (via cluesareeverywhere.com) on the train in his pajamas or shirt sleeves, I think, is a scene that could serve the same purpose; Poirot sitting down in his compartment and grimacing in pain, etc.
Even just alluding to the wound in some way would make the audience go: “Oh, he seemed harmless enough but there’s more to
this guy than meets the eye! What happened to him?”
Poirot fighting in WW1 is not an aspect Christie went into detail with but it is tied tothe Orient Express. Poirot was an important part of the Resistance after Germany invaded neutral Belgium, which is why the Germans sent an assassin after him to lure him out to the front line and finish him off. He got shot but a French General smuggled him across the border to France and then sent him on the Orient Express to England in 1916, where Poirot’s career as a private detective began. A flashback to a younger Poirot in the war and/or on the Orient Express wouldn’t be out of place!
And wouldn’t the war have changed Poirot as a person, gave him nightmares, PTSD? Will we see that in the film? Poirot hearing the murder victim’s scream and getting flashbacks of the battlefield? Or thinking he’s only having a dream about the war and it takes him a few moments to realize the scream is real? Ken would be terrific in the scene.
Canon Poirot walks with a slight limp as a result of the war injury. It’s the only character tidbit they didn’t use in the ITV version with David Suchet. Yet a limp shouldn’t mean Poirot can’t spring into action when the situation calls for it, it’s actually another thing the passangers on the Orient Express (and the audience) would underestimate him for, only to stare speechless when he does something unexpected! Poirot’s a man of contradictions and loves surprising people, I think Ken’s version has tricks up his sleeve that’ll be new to live action Poirot yet still faithful to the stories.
If he puts someone in a headlock to drive the point home he’s not to be trifled with or to be pushed around, it’ll be just fiiine by me! One moment will be enough. Drastic measures, his old training kicking in, showing everyone they know nothing about him, this man was a key RESISTANCE FIGHTER, yes, GOOD, thank you! :D
astrology is not a matter of breaking apart the personality and justifying action and internal conflicts. more so the different placements give us a clue as to the mode of consciousness a person expresses during different moments and circumstances of life. mars when they are passionate, venus when they are social etc;. the sun is the centre of the solar system so its light leaks through every planet. these basic sign descriptions are the archetypes, and they can be applied anywhere they are relevant to your chart
When translating Korean to English, “이미,” “벌써,” and “벌써부터” are all commonly translated as “already.” How do we know when to use each one? What makes them different from each other? Let’s find out!
First of all, 이미 and 벌써 sometimes DO have the same meaning. They both share a meaning of something having happened and finished at some time in the past. In this case, they are interchangeable. When asked about this meaning of 이미 and 벌써, one of my native speaking friends said that 이미 has a slight feel of simply confirming the fact that something has completed already while 벌써 has a slight feel of something having been unexpected, but it’s not a major difference.
파티가 이미/벌써 끝났어요. (The party already ended.)
엄마는 아빠께 전화하라고 했는데 난 1시간 전에 이미/벌써 전화했어. (Mom told me to call dad, but I already called him an hour ago.)
아침 9시밖에 안 됐는데 집안 일을
다 처리했어요. (It’s only 9am and I’ve already taken care of all of the housework.)
벌써, however, has a second meaning that 이미 does not have. This meaning is “already” in reference to something happening more quickly or suddenly than expected.
학기가 벌써 끝났네! 시작한 지 2주일도 안 지난 것 같은데… (The semester has already ended! It seems like not even two weeks have passed since it started…)
그 큰 케이크를 벌써 다 먹었어요?? (You already ate that big cake??)
적응이 잘 되고 있었던 것 같은데 민호 씨는 여기 사는 게 너무 어렵다고 해서 벌써 자기 나라로 돌아가려고 해요. (It seemed like he was adjusting well, but Minho says that living here is too hard so he’s already going back to his country.)
The difference between 벌써 and 벌써부터 is a fairly fine distinction. You can think of 벌써부터 being 벌써 in fast mode— where 벌써 expresses that something happened more quickly or suddenly than expected, 벌써부터 expresses that something you did not expect has happened, and it happening quickly and/or suddenly. It can also carry a feel of disapproval toward whatever the referenced action is. Additionally, it is most often used to talk about something that is in progress. If the action has been completed, 이미 is more appropriate. Let’s look at a few examples:
시험까지 3달 아직도 남았는데 넌 벌써부터 공부하고 있어?? (There are still three months to the test and you’re already studying??)
예린 씨는 벌써부터 퇴근할 준비를 하고 있네요. 지금 2시밖에 안 됐고 퇴근 시간은 6시간인데… (Yerin is already getting ready to leave work. It’s only 2 now, and we get off at 6…)
아기가 아직도 태어나지 않았는데 벌써부터 유치원 신청을 하고 있어요? (The baby hasn’t been born yet, and you’re already registering for kindergartens?)
NOTE: This is actually pretty common in Korea! The best daycares and kindergartens have very long wait lists so parents try to get on the lists really early.
This should clear up any confusion you might have had about the usages of 이미, 벌써, and 벌써부터. Happy studying, everyone!
Imagine Amethyst becoming all supportive of post-trauma Jasper the way Peridot looks out for Lapis… All like, “Hey guys, let’s try not to talk about ‘corruption’ around Jasper…”
Or maybe the topic of Fusion comes up and Amethyst hastily tries to distract her Quartz sister all like, “Hey Jasper LOOK, look, see what I can turn into? See? I’m a tiger! I got stripes, just like you! Isn’t that great?!”
And sometimes Amethyst meets up with Peridot and they talk about how Lapis and Jasper are both coping and growing as individuals and learning healthy modes of expression and it’s all supportive and wonderful and I just want all of my precious rock daughters to have good relationships, healthy support systems and open communication, is that so wrong???
Gemini and Virgo is the story of two sisters. And Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the great story teller, so he wrote his most amusing tale for his winged children. Gemini is the drunk Virgo. Virgo is the focused Gemini. Gemini is the animated Virgo. And Virgo is the sensual Gemini. Both sisters were born during the mutable season, so they flow with the winds of change and adaptable dynamism. But the Gemini sister’s eye colour changes a little, and the way she speaks, she styles her hair in braids then curls then bows then sleek, she dresses like a New Ager in the week following a rocker. She is experimental and playful. She enjoys playing with different personalities and modes of expression. The Virgo sister is self analytical and conscious, she stores away personalities like files, opens the draw for the right moment, and hides parts of herself away. Like Mercury, the two sisters are neither feminine nor masculine, but dual and androgynous, handsome and youthful, with eyes of light and the curiosity of the young. They share a cupboard, and the Gemini’s side is full of colours and bright shades, while the Virgo sister adorns in the aloe green and sublime neutrality, reflecting the earth child inside. They both make for brilliant conversationalists and communicators. But the Gemini sister seems to radiate centrepiece at a party, wine in hand, seducing all through their engaging and stimulating conversation. She is confident, free, and wild when she is releasing the butterflies from her throat. Though her tongue always seems to slip, and words tumble out that make mistakes. And it’s up to the calculative and strategic Virgo sister to save her. With her incredible skills of observation, psychological probing, and ability to strategize the correct words, a Virgo knows how to charm with the ingredients of language. The Gemini sister strews magazines and books around, consuming wikipedia and all the wi fi to satiate her love of learning and mental amusement. The Virgo sister keeps her textbooks, and files, and documents, and novels in neat piles, alphabetically listed and colour co ordinated, seeking to apply the information she has acquired in service oriented and practical formats. The Gemini sister is more concerned with ideas and pockets of trivia, while the Virgo sister reigns in on fact and logic, ensuring that her information is correct. This is what makes for great conversation between the pair, and they often stay up long into the night, with their hyperactivity and sleeplessness, lost in discussion and reverie. With her room a mess, the bills piled up, and her diaries strewn with different handwriting, the Gemini sister seems quite more scattered, mischievous, and distracted than her formulaic, reflective, refined Virgo sister. The Gemini sister enjoys bringing two worlds together and fusing oppositions. The Virgo sister breaks down information into digestible components.
The Gemini sister’s wings flitter from cloud to cloud, stitched with the pages of books, impractical and in a daze, blowing message bubbles into the ether. The Virgo sister’s wings are sewn with leaves and eucalyptus trees, searching for curatives in her mind and earth like a medical box. The two sisters are primary school teachers and express the labor of Mercury, the ruler of early academics. The Gemini sister enjoys teaching through anecdotes, audio, and group conversation. The Virgo sister utilizes hands on activity, technology, and concentrated pre planning. They herald the messenger in every day life. They can change in the blink of an eye. They are both brilliant and witty, loquacious and flirtatious, active in their expression and talking with their dancing hands.
