Midsummer Night Swing's Finale

The 25th Anniversary Season of Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing comes to a close this evening with a performance by the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, offering music by Basie, Ellington, Lionel Hampton, and of course Illinois Jacquet.

The evening’s festivities include the awarding of the Ambassador Prize, an honor bearing the nickname Frankie Manning, one of lindy hop’s best dancers and master teachers.

Tonight at Midsummer Night Swing: Salsa dura, Boogaloo

Hailing from Medellin’s thriving scene, La Sonora Carruseles plays salsa with a distinctly Afro-Colombian flair. While paying tribute to the salsa brava of yesteryear, the band has developed its own take, with punchy horns, cool choruses, and layers of percussion that often flirt with boogaloo and cumbia.

Tonight at Midsummer Night Swing: Jump Blues and Big Band

Saxophonist, singer, and bandleader Ray Gelato has been instrumental in the swing revival in the UK, taking cues from legendary entertainers like Louis Prima. Grabbing the best of jump blues and the Italian songbook, Gelato and his band have returned long-lost favorites by Paulo Conte, Fred Buscaglione, and Renato Carasone to their rightful place: lighting up the dancefloor with mambo italiano. Backing Gelato on this special evening is Philly’s swingin’ big band extraordinaire, the City Rhythm Orchestra.

Tonight at Midsummer Night Swing: Mambo and Salsa with Arturo O'Farrill

With a deep knowledge of Afro-Latin rhythm and percussion, Grammy-winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill and his big band elevate Latin jazz standards to new heights. Tonight honors the Palladium’s Big 3, featuring the mambos of Tito Puente, Machito, and Tito Rodriguez, with some salsa dura surprises thrown in for good measure. The ensemble, joined by special guest timbalero Tito Rodriguez, Jr. and vocalist Sammy Gonzalez, Jr., makes even the most dizzyingly complex pieces feel effortless and joyful, and the best dance tunes feel wonderfully artful.
