What a difference 36 years makes: Presidential inauguration special contrasting pics of Citroën SM Presidentielle with President François Mitterrand, 1981 and DS7 Crossback with President Emmanuel Macron, 2017. The SM Presidentielle was built by Chapron, the DS7 has been specially prepared with an opening roof

From Paris-Match today: http://www.parismatch.com/Actu/Politique/Quand-Chirac-et-Mitterrand-se-faisaient-offrir-leur-manteau-1217546

Chirac and Mitterrand, school friends, both wore the same navy cashmere topcoat from Charvet as president of France.

Decades ago Charvet’s ready-to-wear coats were from Aquascutum, which once upon a time was an excellent English coatmaker. It even had a Paris shop round the corner from Charvet on rue de Castiglione.  Michael Drake worked for Aqua for a while at the start of his career.  Aquascutum went into bankruptcy some years ago and is not what it was.

Charvet has a first-class bespoke suit tailor as well, so it’s possible someone paid for Mitterrand and Chirac to go custom.

Germany's Helmut Kohl dies, aged 87 - BBC News
Helmut Kohl, Germany's ex-chancellor and architect of German reunification in 1990, has died aged 87 - German media

Helmut Kohl, Germany’s ex-chancellor and architect of reunification in 1990, has died at 87, German media say.

He died at his house in Ludwigshafen, in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Bild newspaper reports.

Mr Kohl led Germany for 16 years (from 1982 to 1998). He is credited with bringing East and West Germany together after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Together with his French ally President Francois Mitterrand, he was responsible for the introduction of the euro.

Mr Kohl, who led the centre-right Christian Democrats, was the longest-serving German chancellor of the 20th Century.

In the UK, he is remembered for his differences over the EU with the late UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

He was instrumental in introducing the euro, the EU’s single currency, persuading Germans to give up their cherished deutschemark.

Mr Kohl suffered a bad fall in 2008 and had been confined to a wheelchair.
