Mersa Matruh (مرسى مطروح‎) is a Mediterranean seaport 240 km from Alexandria, Egypt on the main road from the Nile Delta to the Libyan border. Another road leads south into the Western Desert and the oases of Siwa and Bahariya. During the reign of Alexander The Great, the city was known as Amunia; in Ptolemaic and Byzantine times it was Paraitonion, in Roman times Paraetonium. It’s now a major tourist resort and serves as a getaway for Europeans as well as Egyptians eager to flee Cairo in the sweltering summer months. The area is known for its white soft sands and calm transparent waters. It started as a small fishing town during Ancient Egyptian times.
