mister rogers talks with parents

It’s that time of year again and school is back in session. On August 27, 1979, All Things Considered’s Susan Stamberg talked about how to prepare for the first day of school by consulting with Fred Rogers and Daniel Striped Tiger of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

The interview was one of many collaborations between Stamberg and Rogers. The pair went on to work together on several television specials including Mister Rogers Talks to Parents about Superheroes in 1980, and Mister Rogers Talks with Parents about Divorce in 1981. While these PBS specials marked Stamberg’s first forays into live television, at first she almost backed out of the project because of her lack of experience. However, a very special friend – none other than Daniel Striped Tiger –  called and convinced her to change her mind. In the tiger’s voice, Rogers asked, “What’s wrong, Susan? You’re frightened, aren’t you? Tell me about it.” Stamberg later reported that the call gave her confidence, as “weird as it seemed.”
