mission statement

Catholic Tumblr statement

A long time ago, I published a Tumblr mission statement for Catholics. I have completely reworked that old Mission Statement and have now published a new statement. If you, my fellow Catholics, find the statement to be in agreement with your confession of faith, I invite you to either like or reblog it.

This will give new Catholics joining Tumblr a sense of where certain bloggers stand, in matters of their faith. It is not meant to be a “liberal” or “traditional” statement, but simply Catholic, without qualifiers and conditions using political terms.

I hope it gives expression for those of us who blog on Tumblr and want a clear expression of how we see things, even if our blog is not a specifically “Catholic blog.” Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, enfold all of you in their love and keep you on the road to Heaven–Father Angel Sotelo

1)      I believe it is essential to the Catholic name, and identity, to give religious assent to those doctrines, and liturgical forms of worship, which have been proposed by the Magisterium of the Pope, or the Magisterium of the college of bishops, in union with the pope.

2)      Even those teachings of the pope and bishops which have not been defined as dogma, but are part of their ordinary teaching office as Shepherds of the Church, should be shown public respect. If a Catholic cannot presently give assent to certain teachings, they should pray, study, and seek understanding from faithful guides.

3)      Since dissension is the cause of much division and anger among Catholic disciples, a Catholic should not publicly and on social networks, sow the seeds of dissent against Church teaching and approved liturgy, nor ridicule other Catholics for maintaining faith with the Teaching Church.

4)      I believe in reaching out to fellow Catholics who struggle with Church doctrines and moral teachings. Insofar as such Catholics maintain union with the Teaching Church, and accept the Magisterium of the Church as the final arbiter and authority in doctrine, I can have communication and accept that I am dealing with a fellow Catholic.

5)      The social teachings and pastoral applications of doctrine do not bind the Catholic conscience, as much as dogma, in the hierarchy of Gospel truths. These social teachings express prudential judgments, specific options, and methods of response, by the Shepherds, to those who are hurting, oppressed, and marginalized.

6)      Nonetheless, while good Catholics can disagree on how justice is to be obtained for the hurting, the oppressed, and the marginalized, it is also essential to the Catholic name and identity that we all be gravely concerned for battling injustices, and not merely seek to teach doctrine and liturgy.

7)    I will strive to focus discussion and emotions around ideas, either truthful or mistaken, instead of what attacks a person, a fellow blogger, especially with direct cussing and vulgarities.

8)    I believe that my mission, as a Catholic on Tumblr, is to build up fellow Catholics into the Communion of Saints, which is the Church, to form friendships, to help heal, to pray for, and help call other Catholics to accountability for their Christian witness on a social network. Supported by the Body of Christ, I hope to show truth, humor, and courage before all people that I meet on Tumblr.

9)    Finally, I will encourage frequent confession, the holy reception of Communion at Sunday Mass, Holy Hours of Adoration, recitation of the Rosary, devotion to the angels and saints, the purity of body and soul and perseverance in our Holy Faith until the coming in glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Yuzuru Hanyu, World Figure Skating Championships 2017 (Free Skate)

This costume may be partially responsible for the existence of this blog. In that late one night I was reading various people’s lists of best and worst costumes of the season so far, and I got extremely offended by someone who not only put this on their worst list, but used it as part of a rant against “ruffles, glitter and sequins” being a plague on figure skating or some such nonsense.

To which I say, if you hate ruffles, glitter and sequins, what are you even doing reviewing figure skating costumes?

My inner six year old loves this costume, and although my inner six year old also loves Lisa Frank unicorns this is my most instinctual metric for grading, and I feel it is as valid a basis as any other.

PRETTY COLORS, SHOULDER RUFFLE, SPAAAARKLES.

I’ve seen people complain about the shoulder ruffle, saying it seems unnecessary and even comparing it to a large tissue, but personally I’m in favor of it. It adds to the feeling of ocean waves and sea spray to me, which I have to think was intentional.

of course you are wild. you are the fire they suffocated because their eyes burned in the brightness. you are the wolf they kenneled because they feared you could fight them. you are made from ichor and despite your struggle you still show such kindness. you were never the tight cages they chained you in. you are much more. you are a dragon.

Developing believable groups within a society

There have been many famous, infamous, and secretive groups within fiction. If you’re trying to create clubs, factions, gangs, sects, guilds, brotherhoods, or any sort of organized group within your story but need a little boost getting the depth and nuances fleshed out, then I’m here to help.

Where did they begin?

  • Start with an idea. A person or a group of people came up with an idea, a philosophy, a passion. Who were they?
  • They began recruiting, rallying others (a few other people, or large groups) around their idea. How difficult was this? How receptive were those who heard? How open about their new idea were they?
  • They formed an official organization. What mission statement did they write? How was a leader or group of leaders selected? How much disagreement was there in the earlier states? How did they find and/or claim a headquarters? What rules did they start out with, if any?
  • How did they adapt to growth over time? Was the growth fast or slow, if it happened at all? How did rules or structure need to be adjusted as the numbers grew?
  • If the primary goal or mission was met, how did they adjust and redefine their purpose?

How do they function, once established?

  • How has their origin shaped who they are as an organization today?
  • How do they interact with the world at large?
    • Are they a secret society?
    • Are they at odds with the law?
    • Do they run their town/village/country, whether directly or indirectly?
  • Who can join? What does joining require? Is there a “probationary” period? How are new recruits treated?
  • Is there any training or education that proceeds (or precedes) initiation?
  • How are they funded?
    • Through illegal means
    • Through the government
    • Through private donations
    • Through the church
    • Through the (legal) work of their members
  • Do they have an official or unofficial religious affiliation?
  • Do they have an emblem or a sigil, some symbol of their loyalty. How is that mark treated? How commonly recognized is that symbol?
  • How free to live one’s own life is a member once they’ve joined? How much of a day-to-day impact does the membership have?
    • Can they still work their old job?
    • Have their old friends?
    • Stay with their families? Or perhaps the families join as a unit?
    • Keep their home? Perhaps they still live in it, but it becomes property of the guild?
  • How ubiquitous is the mission statement? Is it quoted frequently?
  • What is the consequence for leaving the group? Or for disloyalty?

Happy writing, kiddos!

I want lots of things.
Dainty gold rings, to match my golden earrings.
To give my mom an apartment by the beach.
To go to the doctor’s and not be afraid to be fixed.
To write good songs, not care about the clothes I wear,
to march for peace, to make good friends, to have someone
listen to me, to have lots of someones listen to me.
To live my life, and not be afraid.
To recycle more, to act on the things I say I care about,
to stop crying, to have energy, to have energy do do things
even when crying.
To let my hair grow out into its natural color. For my flushed
cheeks to never disappear. To tell people how much they have
hurt me. To not care if they never apologize. To find love and
be Healed by it. To stop accepting loneliness as the default.
And Fight! Fight! Fight! to be happy.
I want to be able to fight.
I want to never give up (I’m afraid of giving up).
I want to not think about things more than I actually need to.
I want to write poems and give them to people.

Personal Reflections

Every week I go over my “Daily Gratitude” entries and I review how I felt that week. To make it a little more fun and a little less daunting, I use the five emotions from Inside Out: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear (I even have stickers and everything). Each week I write down something that made me joyful, something that made me sad, angry, disgusted, and something that scared me. Some weeks, not all of these apply.

I'm going to clarify myself:

I’ve been drawing shallura with the perspective of them being adults, 18+.

I am aware that the writers have stated Allura to be a teenager, or alluded to such. However, I have chosen to continue to portray them as adults. I do not condone relationships between adults and sub 18 y/o teenagers. It was never my intent to do so.

It is my hope that you will continue following me and my art but I understand if you chose not to. For me, it’s about the art. I love the characters’ dynamic and there are things the writers have done that I simply don’t agree with.

You may assume that I may not always go with canon, as fans in fandom can often do, and have done. I didn’t mean to offend anyone with my portrayal of these characters.

I hope people will find my blog to be peaceful and enjoyable. I wish everyone the best in life.

Peace and Love,

Breezy

Endless Summer: Book 2 News

Inside Choices is a behind-the-scenes blog from the Pixelberry team. Got any suggestions for future blog posts? Let us know!

Back in December, Endless Summer kicked off alongside LoveHacks and The Haunting of Braidwood Manor. It began as a fun tropical island adventure, then transformed into a deepening mystery, complete with a final puzzle that you all worked together as a community to figure out.

The journey continues in Endless Summer: Book 2, which will come out around mid-summer (about July for those of us in the US!). It’s been fun hearing from everyone about how excited they are for Book 2, and I promise you, it’s gonna be epic. To tell you more about the upcoming book, here’s the Endless Summer book lead!

First off, what’s Endless Summer: Book 2 going to be about? No spoilers, please!

Endless 2 picks up right where we left off. Some of your friends have been kidnapped, and the island’s mysteries are only getting deeper. But as our misfit heroes search for the dark truth behind La Huerta, they’re going to uncover some dark truths about each other… and themselves.

When Endless Summer: Book 1 came out, it was a departure from the previous Choices books in both art and narrative style. Do you have anything new and different planned for Book 2?

We’ve actually got quite a few fun, new gameplay ideas and features that we’re putting into Endless 2. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say that all the relationships you built up in Book 1 are going to matter way more in Book 2.

What are you most excited for readers to encounter in Book 2?

I have to say, I’m most eager to see how our fans react to our biggest plot twists yet, especially the ones we have in store for the end of this book.

From where I sit, I’m always overhearing bits and pieces about the next Endless Summer book, whether it’s some wild plot twist or new character art. What’s your favorite part of creating Endless Summer?

Endless Summer has had a lot of freedom to explore what’s possible in a Choices storyline. My favorite experience has been using Endless to invent new, meaningful ways for players to determine their character’s choices and see their decisions unfold, in both expected and unexpected ways. Book 2 takes that mission statement even further, and I can’t wait to see what our fans choose to do in their adventure.

If you had to be trapped on a mysterious tropical island with one of the Endless Summer crew, who would it be?

Maybe I’m crazy, but I’ve gotta say Raj. Nobody would be better at making me laugh through tough times, and besides… I think he’s a lot smarter than he lets on.

Interesting choice! To everyone reading, thanks for your patience as the Endless Summer team works hard on the next book. Keep an eye out for Book 2 around July!

-Jessica

I realize it hasn’t been said anywhere here, and some of you are not familiar with me or my writing, so I will just state it here:

This is going to be a very Gay podcast. Lots of queer characters, trans characters. Also exploring disability at the end of the world, because us disabled people are so often told that we will suddenly cease to exist? When the apocalypse hits? Which simply ain’t true.

In terms of racial and cultural diversity I want to see what auditions we get in, but we’re definitely going to have a diverse cast in that respect as well.

Just so that’s clear. I think we’ve all seen enough apocalypse media that’s whitewashed or terribly narrow in general in terms of the people that get the spotlight. This podcast will not be that type of media.

My Top 5 Shaw Moments

Shoot Week Day 2 - Favourite Shaw Moments

(My top 5 Root moments are here.)

1. Shaw’s sacrifice (411)

I really appreciate that the writers gave Shaw this outstanding sendoff. They could have easily written Shaw out of the story to accommodate Sarah’s pregnancy by having her leave for Barcelona with Tomas in 407, but it wouldn’t have been true to her. Instead, Shaw chose to stay with the team and in particular, Root. Shaw’s defining trait is her unwavering loyalty. So when the team found itself in a dire situation, of course Shaw came to the rescue (and of course their odds improved dramatically; Shaw is such a bamf). Shaw immediately understood what needed to be done and didn’t even hesitate as she sacrificed herself for her friends and for the world. Everything about this scene was hauntingly beautiful – the blue tones, Root’s agony, the devastating music, the slow-mo, and Shaw’s defiant smirk in the face of death. What a hero.

2. “You were my safe place.” (504)

I spent the entirety of this episode whispering variations of “I love you so much” and “Oh Shaw, my darling smol child.” Because we were deep in Shaw’s mind, we got to witness her at her most vulnerable. Her confession about Root being her safe place was so powerful, and, in addition to the fact that she killed herself 7053 times to keep Root safe, conveyed the profoundness of her feelings for Root.

3. “A good soldier does both.” (216)

This is essentially Shaw’s mission statement and summarizes her actions not just in Relevance (which is still the best character introduction I have ever seen), but throughout the show. Again, Shaw’s main quality is her loyalty. She is a soldier and will always do her job. However, she is also true to her friends. After completing her main mission (protecting the program), she avenged Cole. It’s striking to me that Shaw only killed Wilson, who had placed the hit on her and Cole and was therefore most directly responsible for the latter’s death. Shaw never takes lives needlessly.

There was an interesting parallel to this scene in 513 as well. Shaw temporarily put aside her hostility toward Blackwell to guard the Machine as She was dying, but found him later and killed him. Therefore, she both protected the program and exacted her revenge.

4. “The voices are there. You just have to listen.” (305)

This scene gave us insight into how Shaw feels things and emphasized that there is, in fact, nothing wrong with her. It was a lovely quote, and I was thinking about it heavily during the scene in 507 (QSO) when Shaw deciphered Root’s coded message hidden in the static. In that moment, Shaw quite literally listened to the faint static, and in turn, figuratively listened to her muted feelings. The fact that she quickly realized what 4AF meant indicated that she, like Root, had constantly been reminiscing about their last private conversation together before Shaw was captured.

One of the reasons why I think Root and Shaw’s relationship works so well is that Root recognizes that it has never been a question of “turning up the volume” on Shaw; rather, it’s simply about listening and encouraging Shaw to listen as well. It’s about Shaw tuning into the noise and hearing an underlying “symphony.”

5. “If you were a shape, you were a straight line. An arrow.” (513)

This was such a deeply moving message of unconditional love. POI celebrates Shaw for exactly who she is - an arrow. She is emotionally and operatively constant, unwavering in her purpose. She’s perfect, and I love her with everything I have.

Chapter 11

The strident echo of Stella’s boot heels grew humbler come late afternoon as they clicked down the damp concrete sidewalks of London’s shopping districts.  All morning long, she’d walked arm-in-arm with Scully in a mood seemingly unscathed by pain and weather best described as a permanent cold sweat.  But now Scully could feel Stella’s arm growing heavy, leaning a little rather than leading, and beneath the buttery leather of Stella’s off-day civilian jacket was a tightly clamped fist, the humps of four bracing fingers visibly knuckling the black calfskin.  Scully asked if she needed another painkiller.

“One last stop,” was Stella’s indirect answer.

“Are you sure because -”

And then Scully saw it.  Secretive and svelte, a door tucked trenchlike down four wrought-iron steps–a place that looked as likely to sell James Bond his spygear as it did his girlfriends their racy underwear.  Scully had been watching Stella fight to feel like herself all day, and one look at this shop said it was meant to be the pièce de résistance in that carefully drawn battle plan.

“Nevermind,” she said.

The first time Stella ever suggested they go shopping together, they’d just arrived in Chicago, one of their early girls’ weekends when they’d managed to make their paths cross amidst conferences and con artists (psychics, was Mulder’s word for them).  A  wicked midwestern wind had whipped past as they stepped out of the taxi and Stella promptly announced that she hadn’t packed appropriately.  A bit of a rash declaration for someone who’s just arrived, Scully had thought, a bit like someone who, say, wanted to go shopping.  In an effort to act fast, she’d offered to sacrifice up her own warm coat.
