“Her favorite book is actually the story [Belle]’s going to live,” Lin-Manuel Miranda added. “So there’s this crazy bit of foreshadowing that’s happening, but it’s also that interrupting your thought to say how excited you are, is the kind of sophisticated, character-revealing lyric writing that [lyricist and Menken collaborator] Howard Ashman was so good at.”

The Little Mermaid will pair him with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will write the lyrics for the new songs written by Menken. The pair go away back: “I remember when he was a kid, literally signing posters for him. He went to school with my niece and my sister said, ‘There’s this kid… he’s such a big fan.’ I remember going backstage during In the Heights. I look forward to working with him.”
Two little tidbits on Lin’s involvement in The Little Mermaid from Alan Menken
(Delicious irony: Lin, the person who has a rep for oversharing, has shared nothing about his involvement in the live action Little Mermaid. Everything we know is courtesy of Alan Menken.)
Menken: I had one preliminary meeting with Lin-Manuel Miranda and [producer] Marc Platt, and we’re going to be getting into that probably in the fall.
A lot of really accomplished songwriters — from Lin-Manuel Miranda to newly minted Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul to Frozen duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez — have credited you and Howard Ashman, particularly your early work with Disney, with inspiring them to write music.
Menken: I had close connections to each of them before they made it. Either it’s a coincidence, or there’s some magical thing happening…
And Lin was crazy about The Little Mermaid, just rabid over it, and I signed his poster when he was a kid. Now, of course, we’re collaborating on the live-action The Little Mermaid. He’ll be writing lyrics for me.
