miracles are true

Zatanna (2010-2011) #1

“I’ve run the mystic underworld in San Francisco of the last forty years. Now I’m taking the mortal half.”

“Because you think you an?”

“Because know I can. The hit was my way of saying I own San Francisco. Though I’m disappointed the daughter of my old friend John Zatara rewrote my message.”

“My father called you many things, Brother Night, but ‘friend’ was not one of them.”

“His loss. Yours, too, if you don’t remember you’re only allowed her as my guest. You intrigue me, Zatanna. You walk among ordinary people as if you were one of them. They marvel at your fakery with no idea of the true miracles you perform.”

“Hide in plain sight; every good magician does that trick.”

Not gonna lie, these sorts of verbal fisticuffs between adversaries in comics is kinda the stuff I live for. I love it in all of its messy glory. And I love the reinforcement of that theme I mentioned before – Zatanna’s unique spin on the superhero tale is that she walks that line, defending the ordinary from the mystical. And all the balancing that that line inspires her to do as a result.

When I was young, I expected from people more than they could give: neverending friendship and constant excitement.

Now I expect less than they can actually can give: to stay close silently. And their feelings, friendship, noble deeds always seem like a miracle to me: a true grace.

@caitthepiemaker and I have been talking about Bitty’s love for Thanksgiving and how y’all need to cool it with these ‘it’s practically Christmas’ posts because Y’ALL.

THANKSGIVING IS SO IMPORTANT.

  • like I get there’s the whole commercialism thing and maybe in other regions it’s being phased out? But in the South that’s not part of your Thanksgiving really?
  • it’s food and family and making recipes written down on index cards that get pulled out of the tin once a year
  • it’s telling stories about Thanksgivings Past even though you tell the same story every year.
    • “do you remember when the collard greens in the pressure cooker exploded and ended up on the ceiling?”
    • “Don’t let cousin Jo touch the biscuits. You remember the Baking Soda Fisasco of ‘09”
    • “Remember the time that woman promised to bring the turkey and turned it into a casserole– bless her heart– and you had to drive all the way to Athens to find a Walmart open and convince them to sell you just the turkey from their pre-cooked meals?”
    • ((True stories from my fam))
  • So when Bitty goes to college he has planned for this from the very beginning. Freshman year was an improvised turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce and fetta cheese, but after he moves into the Haus there’s nothing to hold him back.

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child, our own two eyes. All is a miracle.

”I started thinking that main characters are not only in dramas or movies. In reality, there are people who live like main characters, and some who live as supporting characters. Those kinds of thoughts….but now I have this thought. Maybe it was me who decided I was a supporting character. Giving up so easily by letting life dictate your path, wasn’t it me who turned off the spotlight shining down on me? If you don’t turn off the spotlight, and don’t give up on your dream, then maybe, something that’s even more fairy tale-like than a fairy tale might happen. The first love that was thought to never come true, comes true. Or a childhood dream which had been pushed aside in your distant memory comes true. Miracle-like things can really happen.”
