Ok, I'm absolutely in love with your persuasion au. I didn't know how much I needed something like this until I read it. It's a treasure. Thank you SO MUCH for it! Can I ask you why do you ship rebelcaptain? as a deep question, I just want to read your thoughts about them 'cause you write so well

First, thank you for the compliment on my Persuasion AU! I’m glad you like it! And I’m going to get working on the next chapter of it now that I’ve written this 1,400+ word treatise I wrote on rebelcaptain because of your question lol.

Chemistry

Diego Luna and Felicity Jones have and had amazing chemistry as Jyn and Cassian. The eye contact, the lack of personal space, and the passion they conveyed as their characters with and without words was really impressive. Even when Jyn and Cassian were arguing and angry with one another, you got the sense that they fought as they did because the other person mattered. Their arguments are never about romance, but they were about the important basics of any relationship, romantic or platonic: truth, trust, faith, belief, and how you choose to act (or whether you choose to act at all).

But their chemistry isn’t just sexual or romantic. They also have chemistry as a battle duo. They work together well almost instantly. When she’s sporting for a fight on Jedha, he knows exactly when to pull her back. When a Partisan bomb is about to blow her to bits, he saves her—it’s not a question. On Scarif, they seem in sync the whole time from when she gives her speech to when they die together on the beach. They don’t question the other because there’s implicit trust and they seem to instinctively understand that what the other person is doing is the right or best way. They’re on the same page if you will.

Individually and Individuality

I love them as individual characters. They are my murder son and my murder daughter.
They both have defined and deep character arcs in the movie, and they grow because of it. They act as catalysts for the other for the change to come. They grow because they met each other, and they do so in the platonic sense.

Jyn’s forced herself into apathy because she’s been hurt, abandoned, and traumatized by “the cause” and the battle between the Rebels and the Empire. She lost both her parents. She was abandoned by her foster parent. She was stripped of anything that ever felt safe, that felt like home. The passion and fight intrinsic to her personality was temporarily snuffed out. She’s given so much but what has she gotten back but misery? She now only fights for herself. But meeting and knowing Cassian reawakens that passion and drive in her. The catalyst moment is when he gives her his trust on the U-wing to Jedha, and it builds from there. He pushes back against her resistance, and where others may have not cared enough to do that, he does, and that fight wakes her up again. Then he offers her a home and a family in him (and Kaytoo, Baze, Chirrut, and Bodhi). Thet cause, which has only taken from her, has given her something back. It has given her people she cares about and who care for her to fight for.

For Cassian, after 20 years of war, I think part of what traps him in this prison of his own making is that he feels like he’s fighting for abstractions now. He’s lost everything and everyone he cares about. There’s only the cause, and it’s made him do terrible things that have been cutting him into little pieces. But then he meets Jyn, and she’s not an abstraction. But it’s not love or love for her that acts as a catalyst for his change: it’s her inner fire. I think he sees in her what he used to see in himself. It reminds him of what he’s fighting for, in part, too, because he sees the tremendous losses she has also suffered at the hands of the fight. In her push to go to Scarif, she also gives him a specific way he can justify everything he has done as a soldier. And like it is for Jyn, I think Cassian finds himself now with people he cares for specifically, people for whom he fights (aka the found family he has personally collected over the course of a week).

Complementary Personalities

I like the idea of opposites attract, but I love more the idea of complementary personalities who share a lot of similarities. I think Jyn and Cassian fit this bill. They’re both orphaned child soldiers (essentially). They’re both passionate fighters. They are iron-willed, confident, resolute, and strong people. They’re different enough, though, that they can balance the other out.

They are complete people when they meet—there’s no need for one to “complete the other”; it’s rather like I argue above, that parts of them have gone dormant, and meeting each other brings them back to life; they fill in the cracks.
And they are equals. There’s no power differential. Sometimes he takes lead. Sometimes she does. They’re a team. It’s beautiful.

Intimacy

The intimacy between these two characters scrambles my brain, to be honest. The first time I saw the movie, it didn’t hit me until late (HI, ELEVATOR SCENE), but it hit me hard when it did. The intimacy in that elevator scene goddamit it—it made everything click for me. Not just the shipping but like, the wholeness of their character arcs. They are both initially cast as loners who guard themselves really closely from others—from affection, from attachment, from any ties to another living thing. But in that elevator scene, it’s all there flashing in their faces. For the first time, Jyn looks soft and lost as he stares at him in the darkened space, a whole future they won’t get to live flashing before her eyes. For him, he looks at her like she’s the only person in the galaxy that matters, and for him too, it’s colored by this sadness of what if. How long has it been since he’s been touched like this? When was the last time he had someone he could love before now?

With the idea of intimacy, too, I would argue that they both let their guard down around one another in a way they don’t with anyone else. Cassian is supposed to be this cool-headed, seasoned solider and spy, but he meets Jyn and is almost immediately running around, disobeying orders, screaming her name, saving her at all cost to his own life and to the cause. Maybe this is how he’s always felt about things, but he’s been able to push it all down before. He can’t with her. She’s triggered something in him that makes him feel. Jyn can also read him like no one else can. He’s an open book in her hands.

And for Jyn, because he’s shown her the first semblance of trust in years, the fact that he just refuses to ever leave her behind, opens her up. Even with Saw, she puts on this air of “don’t care” (“It’s not a problem if you don’t look up”). Again, the personal space issues! The touching and closeness (she touches his arm when they get the clearance to enter Scarif; she notes how he smells [of blaster oil and Eadu dirt]; elevator, beach, he’s the most beautiful person she’s ever seen etc etc.).

He makes her care about someone again because he cares for her. If you watch the scene on the beach when they hold hands—note how Jyn reaches for his hand first. But when she does, it’s tentative and unsure. He senses her hesitation and then he reaches out and takes it.
And the hug to end all hugs. I can’t even.

Unrealized potential

With most of what I ship, it’s usually the unrealized potential that sets my brain on fire. I love a good established couple (Baze and Chirrut) but because they seem to have had their happiness or their happy ending, it doesn’t tug at the heart strings as hard. I don’t actively ship because I don’t have to wonder. To quote one of my favorite shows, Veronica Mars:

Veronica: Come on. Ruined lives? Bloodshed? You really think a relationship should be that hard?

Logan: No one writes songs about the ones that come easy.

And I still contend that I’d ship them just as hard if they had survived and the ending of Rogue One hadn’t given us an explicitly romantic ending (kissing, declarations) because it would still be unrealized potential. Their deaths just make it more tragic and force more sad whale noises from my mouth.

Did I ever tell y’all that I got bored one day and thought AU where Jack is a literal prince as a joke and then completely failed to let go of the concept

Turns out it’s not easy to invent a royal family. Of Canada. Living in Quebec. With the last name “Zimmermann”. I basically had to reinvent Canada’s entire history and constitution just for a stupid joke and now I’ve accidentally got this extremely detailed alternate universe with centuries of history and genealogies of old Canadian families, and absolutely nothing to do with it

Some features:

  • Jack is the last in the Zimmermann line. Since no one actually knows who comes next, no one is very sure what will happen if anything goes wrong
    • There’s a centuries-long dispute between the Armistead and Chevalier families
    • There was an aborted constitutional crisis when Jack overdosed where everyone in politics panicked for a few days
    • Early in a relationship, Jack has to have an awkward “I know this is too early but I need to know if you’ll want kids because… Canada” conversation
  • He’s still known as the Hockey Prince because he insists on playing professional hockey even though he’s a prince, Jack, what are you doing?
  • Inviting his friends to the palace this is hilarious to me
    • Kent “I’ve fucked a prince but I can’t tell anyone” Parson
    • Bitty cannot believe anything about his life
    • “Shits you have to wear pants in the palace”
    • T a t e r
  • Everyone is just a little bit hesitant to check him too hard. Partly because he’s a prince and partly because his long-suffering security guards are watching and also are possibly armed
  • As a result of a minor tiff with the English royal family that included some world-class mocking on the part of then-Queen Joséphine, the Zimmermanns own all Canadian geese in Canada
    • “They can beat your swans in any fight” said Joséphine, probably
    • They also own all the Canadian geese in the US, as part of a minor clause in some treaty or another, which was inserted after a few friendly drinks. No one has done anything about it since so it’s technically still law
    • There’s a long tradition of the Zimmermanns issuing a formal apology to anyone attacked by a Canadian goose
  • There’s been a rumour for as long as anyone can remember that the Zimmermanns are secretly vampires or witches or werewolves, etcetera, depending on the variant you hear. They have never commented on this rumour

They call her a demon.

Some call her fae.

She goes by Flare. An old nickname, she says.

She deals with Them.

Salt nor iron she bears, just a sweetened smile and honeyed words.

She comes back every time.

She’s a forensics major with minors in English and Music.

Flare’s been there as long as anyone can remember. Some say she’s part of the problem of Them.

The Gentry do not fear her, and she does not fear the Gentry.

The last one to ask her about it disappeared. People recall blue flames. Their dorm mysteriously was set ablaze.

No one asks.

No one…. except a young girl, majoring in paranormal investigation. (No one questions why she would go to EU for that). She started to ask around. Collected her evidence.

She went by Arrow.

Sometimes, she and Flare could be seen talking.

She disappeared soon after.

But she came back.

She says she won a game against Them.

She was a success.

Arrow kept playing Their games.

She lost a game against Flare.

She disappeared soon after that.

And sometimes, people will see her. But it’s not her. They do not ask.

They fear Flare’s words. She has Them on her side.

Sometimes they will spot Flare speaking with Them. Sometimes she doesn’t return for days.

She always comes back. And never once has Flare lost a game.

It is unwise to challenge her.

And everyone knows.

Summary: Without a second thought, Lucy quickly downed one last whiskey before jumping to her feet and grabbed Natsu by the hand without a word, dragging him to the dance floor. He didn’t seem to mind though, stumbling his way after her with his face flushed and graced with a smile.

Just a one-shot I thought up as I had a really rough week not too long ago with midterms and projects and this was the result.

This deals with anxiety and alcohol and all that jazz so just a heads up on that.

Part 2/

I read tags guys so if you wanna leave a quick comment it’d be really appreciated!

Also thanks to the amazing @x-benihime for your help with this. It honestly probably would have been shit without your input so thank you <3

Into each life some rain must fall.
                                   -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“A double whiskey please.”

The bartender nodded, pulling out a bottle of Jameson and pouring it into a glass, handing it across the bar. Lucy sighed, looking down into the glass with a sort of resentment before knocking it back in one swing. It had been a long week with her midterms and assignments all shoved together forming her own personal hell.

She ordered another.

She was tired. She was so tired, and she just wanted to drink and have a well-deserved break. It was a Friday night, and she didn’t have anything due again for a while so she told herself why the fuck not.

Though, she supposed, getting wasted at 8pm alone probably wasn’t the best decision she made in a while. But she didn’t have anything else to do (except study and catch up on some work, but who’s counting), and her friends all decided to go home for the weekend, so here she was. It’s not like she minded the alone time though; the bar was really relaxing at this time with only a few people around, and the music was pretty calming.

In any case, at least she would get a good night’s sleep for once.

“What’s a pretty lady like yourself doing all alone at a bar on a Friday night?” Turning towards the voice, Lucy fought down the urge to visibly shudder. An older man- probably in his 60’s- sat beside her, leering down at her.

Forcing a small smile onto her face, she politely lied, “oh I’m not alone, just waiting on my boyfriend. He should be getting here any minute.” Lucy turned her back on the man and turned towards the bartender, ordering another drink.

She was definitely going to have a headache in the morning.

“Well that’s awfully rude, making his little miss wait so long.” The sickly voice drawled, slurring on his words and making Lucy twitch. She thought she had dealt with the situation.

She just wanted to be left alone.

“I came early, he isn’t late. Totally my fault.” She avoided looking at the man, trying to give him the hint to leave her alone.

She heard a chair scrape against the floor, and glanced over to see him moving closer. She internally groaned, not in the mood to deal with this at all.

Just as he was about to say something else- probably something sexist and degrading- she felt an arm slip around her shoulders, a voice whispering in her ear.

“Just go with it.”

Startled and confused, Lucy glanced to the side to see a man with pink hair and a large grin plastered on his face, hand giving her shoulder a squeeze.

“Hey babe, sorry I’m late. Got caught up with some work.”

Lucy saw the old man get up and move, probably to find some other poor young girl to creep out. The pink haired man moved his arm away taking the seat next to her, looking sheepish.

“Sorry for just springing up out of nowhere, just looked like you were really uncomfortable so I thought I’d try to help.” His cheeks were a bit rosy, from embarrassment or alcohol Lucy didn’t know. He scratched the back of his neck, almost absentmindedly as he ordered a drink.

“What’s your name?” she blurted out, face heating up after realizing she had been staring.

Whiskey was not her friend in that moment.

Looking surprised, the man quickly regained composure and offered her a large grin. “Names Natsu, nice to meet ya!” He threw out his hand, which Lucy took without a second thought.

“I’m Lucy. Nice to meet you too.” She supposed she should have been a bit more skeptical of the guy, but he seemed familiar- though she could place how- and he was, simply put, very attractive.

“I know.” Eyes going wide, Natsu started to fumble his way through his slip up. “I mean, you go to Magnolia University, and, well I’m not a stalker or anything, I know that’s what it sounds like but ah, we’re in the same economics class and, ah shit this is weird, but you know my roommate Gray and-”

Lucy couldn’t help it; she burst out laughing. This was honestly one of the cutest things she’s seen in awhile. At least she knew now why he seemed familiar.  “Oh! You’re Gray’s friend who sets things on fire all the time! He’s told me about you.” Apparently he even caught himself on fire once. Lucy remembered wondering why Gray would live with someone who could potentially set their whole apartment on fire, but to each his own.

Natsu’s face seemed to heat up even more at the fact that she knew about his pyro-like habits, and she suddenly felt bad. “But he’s also said you’re a great guy and a decent roommate, besides the fact.”

That seemed to ease him up, as he suddenly sat up straighter and a smirk appeared on his lips. “Ice princess said that? I’ll have to keep that in mind.” He leaned forward slightly on the arm he had resting on the bar, “got any other ammunition I can use against him?”

Lucy rolled her eyes, taking a sip from her drink. She briefly wondered when it had gotten half empty. “I’m not helping you out in whatever weird competition you two have.”

He downed the rest of his drink, quickly ordering another. “How do you know him again anyways?”

“My mother and his father went to school together and were good friends, so we used to visit each other a lot as kids.” Lucy smiled fondly while thinking of her raven-haired friend. She can’t even remember a time when he hadn’t been there, he just always was. “He’s like my brother honestly.”

Natsu’s brows squeezed together in confusion for the briefest of moments, but Lucy saw it. Her mind was in too much in a haze, however, to figure out what was confusing. She should probably slow down on the whiskey, but she was having fun, and she wasn’t quite drunk yet.

  • You find him the second time in the Library typing away on his paper due for your English class
  • The very paper in which you have no clue how to start on because the topic is so broad
  • You sit next to him by the computer and tap on his shoulder
  • “Hi sorry to disturbing you, I’m in your English writing class and I really have no clue how to start on this paper. Would you mind helping me start off?”
  • “Pardon me?”
  • Mark takes out his earphone and you repeat yourself again
  • “Oh okay, let me just wrap up my paragraph and I’ll help you.”
  • This is how you actually started talking to Mark because of homework
  • You asked what Mark was writing his paper on and he explains it to you briefly
  • Eventually, with the help of Mark and the textbook, you set on a topic
  • You thank him and went off to do your own research and write up your paper that’s due in a few weeks
  • For the following few weeks, you glue yourself to the library as you did your other assignments and wrote the paper
  • You’d see Mark appear a few times in the library and you guys just wave at each other
  • The day before the paper is due, you were in the library editing the final paragraph when someone taps you on the shoulder
  • “Hey, how’s the paper coming along?”
  • It was Mark with a few science books in his arms
  • “It’s going okay, just editing the last paragraph. Yours?”
  • “I finished it a few days ago, just need to proofread it before handing it in tomorrow Can I sit here by the way?”
  • “Sure.”
  • Mark casually sits beside you as you have small talk here and there while the both of you got your work done
  • You stretched your back when you were finally done and gather your things.
  • Mark was deeply concentrated, calculating some equation while his eyes scanned the books
  • You tap him on the shoulder to get his attention
  • “Hey, I’m done. Thank you so much for helping me.”
  • “It’s no problem, glad you have your paper written up.”
  • He flashes his cute smile
  • “Good luck with your work, I have class so I gotta run.”
  • “Sure, see you around in English!”
