First day of Steel City Con winter tomorrow…gonna go see Salacious Crumb and John Wesley Shipp (aka Barry’s dad in The Flash, aka the original Flash in the old TV series).
Sadly, I know none of the people there will give me the same excitement I felt when I found out Mindy Sterling was there in the summer. When I realized that Lin Beifong was right outside the room I was sitting in, I practically had to be forced back into my seat by my girlfriend (we were waiting for Billy Dee Williams, so it was kinda significant). But I met her, I got her autograph and a picture, and it was one of the best days of my life, and I owe a lot of that excitement to amiraelizabeth because her passion for Lin turned Chief Beifong into far more than just a side character–every time she posts about our esteemed Chief of Police, I’m reminded of my own enthusiasm whenever I see Mai appear. Both are side characters who may never get all of the screentime they could and will always play second-fiddle to the main characters, but who find their own fans and fill them with excitement and delight every time they appear.
It’s a testament to the quality of both shows that minor characters like these can provide such joy and encouragement. They all have their super-fans, and I’m thankful to Amira for her passion, because when I learned that Mindy was there, I imagined the reaction Amira would have had if she found out I missed my chance to see Miss Sterling–and that helped fuel my own drive and enthusiasm. That kind of excitement can be contagious, and it’s one of the core elements in this fandom. Owl helped me to love Korra more with her unbridled enthusiasm, Pulpo kind of warmed me to Mako a bit maybe, and there are other minor characters who make me think of other fans every time they appear…and those moments, the thought that someone in this fandom is really getting excited right now, only improves the quality of the show as a whole.
Here’s hoping I have a moment somewhat similar to that tomorrow, but in the meantime, as we hit this tenth episode, I want to thank all the positive and encouraging fans out there who make these episodes all the more enjoyable to watch. You’re all important, and I’m grateful for all of you.
