11.  Cabaret

This is one of those rare musicals that is redefined over and over again. In the original, Joel Gray played the MC. 

But I have also seen amazing productions where a woman played the MC. And another production where a woman MC pretended to be a man. 

The material is so strong that in the end it doesn’t matter. The MC is one of those great musical theatre roles can stand up to just about anything.
