tbh I’m still confused as to why Tumblr isn’t totally obsessed with the movie Austenland like it’s literally about a woman whose fandom consumes her and then she lives it out in real life and kisses a hot British guy at the end like?????
As fun as “Lost in Austen” was to watch and “Austenland” will be to see, I really don’t like this reoccurring representation of the Jane Austen fandom.
Women who read Jane Austen are not prissy girls who wait around for the perfect gentleman to sweep them off their feet. Jane Austen never encouraged that in her writing. Jane Austen’s men are not perfect. Jane Austen’s characters are not perfect. They all have their faults and her stories are about women and men learning to tolerate and respect each other despite their faults and the people who love her stories get that.
For once, I want to see a Jane Austen fan represented in fiction accurately - as someone wise; because that’s the sort of person Jane Austen makes out of her reader. Is that too much to ask?
