Look at two grizzled old lions grinning at each other while the hapless Phildebeest does his best to be invisible. Sorry, Phil, but that’s *not* how it works – just because you’re not looking at him, doesn’t mean Malcolm’s not planning on eating YOU!
So the first time Peter Onion Mannion and Malcolm Hamish McDeath were in the same place at the same time was in Rise of the Nutters,
but believe it or not, we had to wait until half way through series 3 for them to actually cross snarky verbal swords.
I’m not going to lie: I LOVE Opposition Mannion (who unlike his series 4 self has pretty much nothing to worry about except Stewart taking his tie away or sending him to Watford) and how he fully lives up to Robyn’s description of Man-Yum with his wit and
confidence and charm and verbal dexterity. He’s one of the very few people who can go toe-to-toe with our Mr Tucker and completely hold his own. Because note that it’s Malcolm who retires gracefully from the field of battle here after paying tribute to his worthy opponent with a handshake and two hearty back-slaps.
Well, retires gracefully a bit, because he sure doesn’t go very far. Not while there’s a still a big giant lumbering Phildebeest to toy with and terrify.
Because there are funny, funny, opponents, but there’s ALSO delicious, delicious, prey.
