It’s official. Undefeated American and WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will challenge Miguel Angel Cotto of Puerto Rico for the WBA superwelterweight title on Cinco de Mayo. The fight will be staged at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.
Mayweather is a seven time world champion in five divisions while Cotto is a three division champion. Mayweather has a perfect record of 42-0 (26KO’s) while Cotto has 37-2 (30KO’s).
Both fighters came from recent victories. Mayweather knocked out Victor Ortiz in the fourth round to take the WBC welterweight title while Cotto stopped Margarito in the 10th round to retain his WBA superwelterweight crown and avenged his loss in their first fight.
Mayweather will be looking to add another belt to his collections. Cotto will be looking to upset and give Mayweather his first embarrassing loss. Let us witness a defensive specialist against an agressive pugilist on Cinco de Mayo. May the best man win.
During Cotto’s fight with eight division champion Manny Pacquiao, he was knocked down in the 3rd and 4th rounds and the fight was stopped at the 11th round with Pacquiao winning by TKO.
Pacquiao-Mayweather superfight negotiations failed again due to purse split disagreement.
