Romance: Avoiding Love Triangle/Motivation Conflict

midniterose asked:

So I have this story idea and, and the protagonist has to make her big decision at the end to either save the world or run and hide, the two men in her life are convinced that her conflict is between them (because each option excludes one of the boys), but it’s not about that for her. I guess the question is, do you have any tips on writing a story where there is a love triangle in play but making it very clear that the love triangle has nothing to do with the protagonist’s motivation?

Just make sure she has a motivation not related to either guy, and make sure she’s clear about what that motivation is. Also, show her making decisions that oppose the guys. Demonstrate that she always puts more important things before what her heart wants. As long as the reader sees that she’s not likely to take the guys into account when making decisions, they won’t have any reason to believe that she’s motivated toward her goal by either one of them.
