microphone jack

Hot Off The Press

Another AU where Jacky-Boy is a hockey player and Bitty has a job that involves hockey bc that’s my aesthetic. Anyway, I really know nothing about how the world of sports journalism works so there is probably some inaccuracies in here, but it’s an AU so who cares. Artistic license and all that. Very slightly NSFW (i just wanted to get all the warnings out there).

“Are you into men?”

Jack has been asked this question before, but in such a subtle way (and typically involving Parson) that it’s easy to avoid. No reporter has ever straight out asked him. Besides, he’s not gay. He’s bisexual. So when Jack usually tells them, “No.” it’s not a lie. However, this time it feels different. Maybe it wasn’t just this particular time, but all the times added onto each other that’s finally causing him to really think about what hole he’s digging himself into.

The blunt question has him feeling panicky and the other presser notice his reaction too. Jack can’t say no, because that’s not true. He is into men. Jack’s panic quickly shifts, and now he just feels like shoving the microphones away and storming out, because this is hockey goddammit. Not E! news.

“Excuse me?” Jack clears his throat, trying to buy himself some time to think of a properly crafted response. Over the years, he’s developed a talent for that.

But everything is on overdrive and he feels his breath start to quicken again–

“Are you into men?” Another reporter asks, and it takes Jack a moment to realize that the reporter isn’t asking him. He’s asking the man who popped the question in the first place.

All attention, including Jack’s, turns to the small blonde that got lost in the bundle of people. He holds up his mic towards the reporter who popped the question in the first place.

“Hey guys! Today I’m here with the whole gang except for Mikey! So you have Caspar, Josh, Oli, Jack, Conor, Y/N and me! And today we’re going to do the ‘encore singing challenge part 2!”, Joe belted out.

“But Joe wait”, Jack asked in a way that everyone knew it was staged, “we are with 7 and we only have one microphone!”. “Well Jack, that is right. So since we have our music expert, Conor, here, he will be the judge. And us 6 will divide in 3 teams of 2. Let’s say I’m in a team with Jack, then I will take the first 3 rounds on me and Jack will do the other 3. Everyone understands? Yeah? alright, I suggest everyone puts their name in the hat”.

Everyone had put their name in. you were really hoping for Jack for two reasons. One: Jack knew the lyrics to pretty much every song and second: you just wanted to beat your boyfriend Joe.

They let you pick first, since you were the only girl. And your wish got granted as the paper read “Jack”. He as well seemed happy as he immediately hugged you.

The other teams were Joe and Oli and Caspar and Josh. You felt pretty confident as you knew that neither Caspar or Josh knew any lyrics. The only problem would be Joe.

“Okay the first round is Joe against Caspar and …”, Conor paused for a dramatic effect,” Y/N!”. You groaned.

As we all went to sit down on Joe’s bed, Oli said:” Maybe we should put the mic on the chair so everyone can be shot and it’s fairer”. So that’s what you did and then the game began.

“First word is SPAGHETTI”, Conor shouted the last bit.

The other two were thinking while you immediately grabbed the mic. “His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti”.

A course of grunts went through Capsar and Joe. “Okay, so that’s one for team Y/N and Jack! The next word is LIBIDO”.

This time it took a bit longer to come up with an answer. Suddenly Joe threw himself at the mic and started singing: “I feel stupid and contagious. Here we are now, entertain us. A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido”. “Oh wow you are really going for it”, you laughed. “Watch out or you’ll end up in the hospital”, Jack added.

“So it’s one for Joe and Olie, one for Y/N and jack and zero for Caspar and Josh! The last one for you guys is … FOOL!”, Conor said.

This time you and Caspar both went for it, but you beat him. “I’m only a fool for you, and maybe you’re too good for me, I’m only a fool for you. But I don’t fucking care, at all”.

“What? What song is that?”, Joe asked you. “Are you kidding me?! How do you not know that one?! It’s Idfc by blackbear”, you said a bit annoyed. No one seemed to know that song and it annoys you because it’s your favorite one.

The next 3 rounds ended and the score was zero for Caspar and Josh, three for Joe and Oli and three for Jack and you.

“Since we have a tie, we need a tiebreaker. So everyone sit down. The first one from one of the teams to answer, wins.”, Conor said. “You’re your word is … MESS”.

Wait, that was Joe and your song! That was the song that was playing when you first kissed. Obviously, Joe knew it too, so it was just a race to see who was first.

You were almost there, when suddenly you fell and hit your leg on the chair. You felt a sharp pain and saw the blood almost streaming out of your leg.

“Oh shit Y/N! Are you alright?”, Joe asked. “Uhm, I don’t really know to be honest”. The boys came rushing to your side. Caspar took a closer look and said: “We better get you to the hospital. I think you’re gonna need stitches”.

Joe looked really worried so you tried to assure him that everything was fine. “I’m alright Joe. It’s just a bit blood”. Suddenly your boyfriend stood up. “Okay guys, I’m gonna take her to the hospital. Could you please clean up the room?”, he asked. All the other boys nodded and said their goodbyes.

You started to walk out of the apartment, but soon two strong arms picked you up bridal style. “Joe!”, you giggled, “I can still walk you know”.

“Shut up. It’s my fault you’re hurt, so I’ll do anything to make it better”. He was being so sweet. You grabbed his chin and placed a soft kiss on his lips. “I love you Joe”. “I love you too baby”.

When you both got in the car, he was never not touching you. And when you went in the hospital, his arm never left your waist.

Turns out Oli and Caspar were both right. It might not have been Joe who had to go to the hospital, but you and you did get stitches.

On the way back home, you heard Joe hum a song. It was Shawn Mendes’ Stitches. You smacked his arm.

“Hey! What was that for?”, he yelped astonished. “Stop singing that song, you idiot!“

The day became night in what seemed like a blink of an eye. It was gorgeous, the sky above was littered with thousands of individual stars, and the moon caressed the beautifully decorated gardens; providing a sense of peace and calm. You were crouched down on one of the white silk grass covers, your wedding dress falling perfectly around you as you spoke to one of your little nieces with a soft voice.

You grin and pinch his cheek when his mother calls him over, leaving you to stand up and smile at his back. Arms wind around your waist from behind and so you turn around, a smile growing on your face when you meet eyes with your husband. “Hi.” You grin, kissing him softly and wrapping your arms around his neck loosely.

He stares into your eyes for a moment before pressing his lips together and smiling. “God, you’re so beautiful.”

You could only manage to reciprocate his loving smile before you were approached by Zoe, who was holding up her vlogging camera with a wide smile on her face. You can’t help but chuckle when she shoved her camera into Joe’s hands and pulls you into a tight hug. “You look so beautiful!”

“I think you’ve told me that about twenty times today.” You smirk in amusement as you both break away from the hug and she rolls her eyes at you playfully before taking back her camera from Joe, who walks over and wraps his arms around you. You both watch as Zoe moves her camera to show the viewers the space that she’d had a big part in organizing. “Guys, look how beautiful everything looks. Okay, let’s go find Tan and-” Her voice gets quieter and quieter as she walks away, leaving you to glance up at Joe with an amused grin.

“Why did we agree to let people vlog?” He asks, and for a split second he seemed serious, but then he began to laugh slightly and you just shook your head and rolled your eyes with a humored smile.

You place your hands on his chest, fiddling with the buttons on his suit for a moment before replying. “Because this way, we’ll be able to look back on one of the most beautiful days of our lives from so many different perspectives.”

He hums and grabs onto your hand, softly guiding you back toward the master table where you’d eaten earlier on, and you start talking to his father, who had cried more times than he’d ever admit during the last ten hours.

You hung around for a while, receiving so many congratulations and hugs from your guests, making your way around the grounds and carrying your little nephew around on your waist. Zoe and Alfie talked to you a little more for their vlogs, you and Zoe did some elaborate dances in front of the cameras and Joe threw you over his shoulder and almost dropped you on-top of the cake.

“Okay ladies and gentlemen, I think it’s about time our gorgeous bride and our troll of a groom have their first dance.” Jack speaks through the microphone from behind the DJ stand, a role he’d put himself up for the moment he heard you and Joe were engaged.

You can’t help but look over at him and laugh, throwing your head back as Joe sweeps you up off of your feet and carries you over to the dancefloor, where fairy lights were hung from the trees and white silk was tied beautifully all around you.

He places you back down on your feet and you stick your tongue out at him playfully, just as the music for your first dance began to play through the speakers. Your guests all gathered around the dancefloor, cameras, and phones being held in your direction as everyone cheered and whistled.

Joe pulls you into his arms, wrapping his own around your waist as you look up at him with a smile, winding your arms around his neck loosely. You sway to the music, and you giggle when he twirls you around, his touched delicate and sweet. You blink slowly and bite your lip, resting your head on his chest as you continued to dance under the watchful eyes of your friends and family.

When the song ended and you stopped moving, simply staring into each other’s eyes, there were three seconds of absolute silence before everyone broke out into cheers and screams of excitement and Jack took that as his queue to put on his mix track that he’d been working on for months.

You were spun around the dance floor, dancing with Alfie and Zoe and then picking up your nephew and having a little dance with him. You danced with Jonathon and Anna, and even managed to squeeze in a dance with each of the Buttercreams too, seeing as they’d managed to completely take charge of the dancefloor.

And then, when the clock struck eleven and you and Joe found yourselves just enjoying being in each other’s arms, slowly dancing to the music that was playing, you glanced over your shoulder at Jack who nodded and winked; letting you know that it was time.

You’d been planning this for a while, without letting Joe or anyone for that matter other than Jack know about it. Conor Maynard had moved to L.A for a few months and had previously let the couple know that he had really important prior arrangements and couldn’t make it to the wedding. Joe had acted like it didn’t really matter to him, but you could tell by the way his face dropped as he read the reply that it really did.

It was just your luck, really, that when Conor’s important week of meetings and studio time fell through and he could come, he’d called you and not Joe. That was when the two of you came up with the plan. You wouldn’t tell Joe that he was coming, and he’d only find out when Conor walked out onto the stage and began to sing the song that was playing when you and joe first met.

And so, you distract your husband with soft words as Conor walks out onto the stage with a microphone and Jack swiftly changes the track. The older Maynard brother began to sing, his voice melodic and perfect. Joe turns his head sharply toward the stage as everyone gasps and begins to clap their hands, leaving Joe to turn back to you and shake his head. “No way..”

“He called, and I thought it’d be a nice surprise.” You smile, and he pulls you into a long, loving kiss, before pulling away and leaning his forehead against yours. With a hum, you wrap your arms back around him and begin to dance along to the song, only looking up to meet eyes with Conor, who winked and smiled at you quickly before he continued to sing.

Your wedding day couldn’t have been more perfect.

23 years old and I am more in love with this band than I ever have been. Eleven years of growing up with them, seeing them change as I change, finding the best and worst parts of myself in their lyrics, drowning out the rest of the world with their music to find solace, feeling at home in their crowds, and so much more that mere words can hardly scratch the surface of. So many fond memories surround All Time Low, as well as some of my more dreary memories because when I was down and out, THEY were the ones who picked me back up again. Middle school, high school and college were tremendously difficult times for me as always being a recluse, but THIS BAND was my safety net. There were many nights growing up where I truly felt in my young heart that they were all I had to live for, that if I didn’t have them I would have nothing, and though I am older and my perceptions of life have evolved, that does not diminish the profound effect ATL had on me then, and I am beyond grateful for the uplifting, heartfelt significance of their legacy. They have always been exactly what I need.

Last night was a perfect blend of nostalgic, exhilarating, humbling and empowering. Before the show, it had been over two years since I last saw them live; when I saw them last, I was at my worst both mentally and physically - 256 lbs, suicidal, lost and more alone than I had ever felt. But last night was my first time experiencing All Time Low as this new version of myself. It was my first time experiencing them as the confident, strong, unconquerable woman that I continue to grow into. In the two years that have passed since I last saw them, I have lost 120 lbs, gained a healthy relationship with myself, rejuvenated my bond with the love of my life, found my purpose, pursued my passions, found success and joy in the things that used to scare me, transformed into an entirely new person who believes in herself, follows her dreams, walks with her head held high and loves everything about her life. Being in that crowd last night felt completely euphoric to me. I was SO present. So alive. So connected to myself and everyone around me. It was a celebration of who I have become with the band that kept me afloat before I knew what I was capable of. I have so many things to thank them for, and every atom I am made of was bursting with gratitude as I stared up at them on that stage and sang along as loud as I could to my favorite songs in the entire world. I am so proud of who I am today, and it started with them. It all started with falling in love with All Time Low. I don’t know what I would have done without them back then, and the same holds true now. No one understands the depth of what these four guys mean to me. I love All Time Low and always will.

“Bold enough to fall flat on my face while I walk as they crawl. Slowing down is just a waste of time to let go- tapping my fingers to the rhythm of a metronome, counting opportunities. Take apart the gravity that’s holding me down. Make a point to find a resolution, to be my own solution. Is this what it feels like, finding out that I’ve got the guts to say anything?” ❤️ #VIVALAALLTIMEANGELA @alltimelow

COVER YOUR TRACKS: Cameron Boucher - Some Covers

While this spot is normally reserved for a cover song of the week, I’ve decided to do a cover album of the week instead! Cameron Boucher of Old Gray and Sorority Noise, both heavy-hitters in east coast DIY punk, released a solo album earlier this month, Some Covers, comprised solely of covers from very notable, recognizable artists – Modest Mouse, Julien Baker, TWIABP, The Microphones, Alex G, and others. What stands out most about the eight-song collection is Boucher’s sincerity, slowly dripping from acoustic-notes and mellotronic ooze, sliding him to the brink of defeat. There’s a weary nature about these renditions that pulls off a clinical sense of tiredness at which Boucher is adept. While the album stands well on its own, the “Bankrupt on Selling” and “Low Light Assembly” covers are two of my favorites.

As one of the standouts on Modest Mouse’s Lonesome Crowded West, Boucher finds a way to make “Bankrupt on Selling” even more desperate-sounding and weepy - quite the feat. With enhanced bedroom-esque production, the track focuses heavily on the narrator’s desolation and Boucher’s sighing, downcast tone as opposed to Isaac Brock’s more defiant crawks. The isolation and bleak atmosphere, accompanied by Boucher’s earnestness, is what really makes this cover a worthwhile listen.

“Low Light Assembly” is the solemn, penultimate track to TWIABP’s Whenever, If Ever, filled with group vocals and mesmerizing chords all pent-up to the album’s climactic finish. Back-dropped by a haunting synth, Boucher gently whispers to the audible void, meditating with an exhaustion that makes the lyrics shine brightly, once again amplifying the atmosphere of the original song.

Some Covers is a well-done example of how an artist may imbue their own personality into another’s work, giving it new flavor and life. It’s available on Bandcamp as a name-your-price download.

Passive or Active? We’re talking about speakers... not the other thing.

When it comes to live sound audio systems, they can be as simple as a single speaker, microphone and cable plugged into the back of a powered cabinet to a full multi-channel line array system with 256 channels of audio and various broadcast feeds.  But, all systems start with the basics, and while there may be more parts added, the basic structure stays the same.

While there are many variations, there are two types of basic systems that you can expect to use early on in your career as an audio technician: Active and Passive systems.  Here is a short list of the differences based on an analog mixer based FOH (Front-Of-House)

The difference between the two systems has to do with how the speakers are powered.  Many smaller systems have moved to active or “powered” speakers, where the amplifiers that convert the signal from a line level signal (in Volts) to Watts are built into the speakers themselves.  This means that the amplifiers are already configured to the speakers built into the cabinets, and requires less cable and equipment to set up. The disadvantage is that you are limited in the amount of power you can install in one speaker cabinet.

Many venues and large music tours continue to use separate power amplifiers and “passive” speaker cabinets. This allows for unlimited configurations of speakers and amplifiers, and enables expansion of a system for bigger shows.  The downside is that passive systems are more difficult to transport and require far more components, as well as more accurate configuration to ensure the power output and impedance of the speakers match the amplifiers.

Power To the People

The reason there are different kinds of systems all comes down to power is managed.  All shows begin with some of the smallest values of electricity called millivolts, which is one millionth of a volt and also known as “mic level” (although there are some mics that produce line level signal). This is the level of signal electric guitars send to amps and that microphones generate or register to the audio console.  Not all consoles use the same type of audio jack for microphones or for other insturments, so always refer to the manufacturer or even the manual to determine which inputs accept

The next stage of power conversion is from millivolts to volts. This is a 1,000 times increase in power! This is often produced by insturments such as DJ consoles, other on-stage mixer outputs, keyboards and other digial devices. Mobile phones and media players’ headphone jacks also produce audio in a line level signal.  This is *NOT* the same voltage as what is put out by microphones, so do *NOT* plug a line level input into a channel that is designed for mic level only!

A “line” level output is also the same output most mixers send after the signal has been processed and is being forwarded to amplifiers. From there the power is sent to an amplifier to be converted into a more effective signal called watts. Now, what is the difference between Volts and Watts? What about Amps?
Audio engineers get the question “What’s the difference between amps, volts and watts?” enough that it is best to try to simplify the answer by using an analogy.

If we think of electricity as water flowing through a pipe it can help us understand amps, volts and watts. Amps would be the volume of water flowing through the pipe. The water pressure would be the voltage. Watts would be the power (volts x amps) the water could provide (think back to the old days when water was used to power mills). So with this analogy in mind the definitions below for amp, volt and watt should be easier to understand:

Amp – an ampere is the unit for measuring electricity. The accepted standard unit used for measuring how fast an electric current flows is an example of an ampere.

Volt – the basic unit of electromotive force, equal to the electromotive force, or difference in potential, that causes a current of one ampere to flow through a conductor having a resistance of one ohm.

Watt – the basic unit of electric, mechanical, or thermal power, equal to one joule per second or 10 ergs per second (of a horsepower): for electric power it is equal to one volt-ampere.

Back to our analogy; electricity is the flow (like water) of electrons through a conductor like a wire. The rate at which electricity flows is measured as an electric current. The electric current is measured in amps. What makes the current flow? In our water analogy we could say a battery would be the pump that makes the water flow which creates pressure in the pipe. The pressure is the voltage. And as we said before the watts are the power the water could provide (like to a mill wheel). The watt is a measure of how much power is released each second.

Okay so....

Oh hey I’ve seen a post thinking about this but you know the microphone Jack was talking about where the voices sound from a specific place, a binaural microphone, its called, I think. So anyway I was thinking: what if Jack was to do it with Anti and like it would be cool! Actually it would be brilliant! But like by the fact that people have made a posts of having the three monkeys (speak no evil, see no evil and hear no evil) and because hear no evil maybe it could be a video with just Antis voice in the background and maybe a few glitches hear and there telling us more of his plan Or maybe it could even be Chase talking to/whoever the precious boy is to Anti Or maybe just both of them talking to each other? Christmas » Jack Maynard

Requests: Hii, I know Christmas has passed but could you right an imagine of spending Christmas Day at Jack’s family home? Thank youu x

Hi! Could you do more family imagines, when y/n is pregnant or they have children? Thanks x

You were driving to Brighton from London with your boyfriend, Jack and your 18-month-old daughter, Caitlyn to spend Christmas with Jack’s family. You had agreed to spend it in Brighton rather than with your family as you had spent it with them last year.

You arrived at Jack’s parents’ house in the mid-afternoon and Caitlyn was lost in slumber. Helen and Anna rushed out to meet the three of you, Gary and Conor trailing behind them. You giggled as you were embraced by each Maynard and greeting them all with ‘hello’s.

You grabbed one of the bags out of the car as Jack lifted your daughter out of her carseat in the back. The remaining Maynard’s helped you carry some of the other bags inside where you were greeted by warmth and the smell of food.
