Clara Oswald arrived at Netherfield Park on the night of the party in advance of the Tyler family, the regiment, and everyone else of interest. She was unimpressed with the fashion of arriving late with a grand entrance that many people tended toward. She preferred to arrive early so as not to miss any interesting thing that might happen.

“Ah, Miss Oswald, a pleasure to see you this evening. I’m so glad you could come!”

Mr. Smith’s greeting was so warm and so obviously sincere that Clara’s pleasant social facade broke for a moment as she grinned at him.

“The pleasure is entirely mine, Mr. Smith,” she said. “The house is lovely this evening, did your sister decorate?”

“Yes, yes she did. Jabe has an excellent eye for such things, don’t you think?”

The pair of them looked around the largely-empty ballroom to look at the vined motif that Miss Smith had requested. It was, in fact, very lovely and Clara was impressed, though it was, perhaps, too subtle to be noticed once the ballroom had been filled.

“She will be down in a few minutes, Miss Smith,” Mr. Smith said, glancing up at the sweeping staircase that led to the private parts of the house. “But there is Mr. Foreman. Foreman!” he called, bringing his friend’s attention to himself. “Come say hello to Miss Oswald.”
