The Strange Obsession of Narcissus

Elio Giulio Crotti (? – after 1564), Opuscula p. 133 “Narcissus” = Perosa and Sparrow (eds.), Renaissance Latin Verse 196

Is this love? Is this frenzy?  Or a sickness of the mind?
  I don’t want it- I do- again I don’t- again I do.
Is this frost? Is this fire?  For in equal measure my spirit blazes up
And my breath is sluggish in my chilly mouth.
But it is not love nor frenzy, fire nor frost-
I am the one who snatched and stole me from myself.

Narcissus, Caravaggio, 1598-99
