“There was an autograph signing at Jax Records on Haight St. There were thousands of young kids waiting to see The Jacksons. At one point the crowd was so intense, everyone was slowly edging forward so that the people in front were pushed through the huge plate glass windows. It was horrible, kids all over the place in pools of blood. I have in my hand pictures that would have made front page of the Bay Area papers, stories everywhere, but I couldn’t do it to Michael and Epic. I lost some money and some notoriety, but I kept my integrity.” - Pat Johnson (2009) (x) (x)

“Once in a record store in San Francisco over a thousand kids were there, they all rushed forward and they broke a window. A large piece of glass fell on a girl. And this girl …has been slaughtered. She got slaughtered. And I remember that there was blood everywhere. Oh Lord, so much blood. And she grabbed her throat and she was bleeding and everybody was ignoring it …I wonder what happened to her.” - Michael Jackson (1977, Randy Taraborrelli )

Hey autumn bloggers want to make a delicious pumpkin spice latte at home? Here’s what you’ll need.
4 tablespoons pumpkin purée
2 tablespoons brown sugar
I teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 ½ cups milk
1 tablespoon vanilla.
Mix ingredients into small pot and boil, stirring very often. After it boils whisk for two minutes. Add your coffee and top with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon 🎃

Makes 2 cups
Jumbo Triple Luxe Cowl

Ever since I received my Jumbo BQueen Collection hook (23 mm), I was itching to put it to use with some ultra thick yarn.  Back in May, I found some luxurious yarn called Loops & Threads “Phat” yarn for only $3.99!  We stocked up on this yarn as it was incredibly soft and I knew that I could make a gorgeous oversized Triple Luxe Cowl with it!

You’ll notice that the yarn is classified as a Super Bulky level 6 even though it’s significantly thicker than your typical Level 6 yarn.  Interestingly, because of all these super thick yarns that have been added to the marketplace recently (particularly for arm knitting), the Craft Yarn Council decided to add a 7th category called “Jumbo” to its Yarn Weight System (read more about it HERE).  Since not all yarn companies have transitioned to this new system, you can look at the recommended hook size on the label to get an indication of how thick the yarn is.  Typical level 6 yarns recommend a 9 mm hook, but super thick yarns such as this one recommend an 11.5 mm hook!  You can look out for these yarns to make an oversized cowl or you could also hold two strands of your typical level 6 bulky yarn together (e.g. Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick or Loops & Threads Cozy Wool).

It is so much fun crocheting with super thick yarn and a jumbo hook!  The yarn effortlessly glides across the silky smooth wood.  If you are on the hunt for a more economical jumbo wood hook, you can check out this one by ChiaoGoo HERE!  I posted this photo back in May to show you the cowl I was making!

Here is the finished product!  Don’t those giant stitches look amazing?  I ended up using exactly 2 skeins, so this finished cowl was only $8 in yarn material!

This cowl wraps around twice and drapes beautifully!  I have made a couple of these Jumbo Triple Luxe Cowls and donated them to online church auctions to help raise money for a Guatemala short term missions team and to sponsor a refugee family.  People were very generous in bidding for these cowls as they knew the money was going to great causes!

People have asked me about the Loops & Threads Phat yarn recently, and unfortunately it has been discontinued.   Because of this, I tried to crochet another Jumbo Triple Luxe Cowl using yarn that is currently available.  We went yarn shopping this past weekend and I found this wonderful section of super thick yarn!  I have been really impressed with Loops & Threads’ variety of yarns at Michaels.  The Ziggy and Biggie yarns are so luscious and soft, and with the extra 20% off coupon, each skein was only $5.50.

I picked up a couple of the Loops & Threads “Biggie” yarn in the gold and grey colours!  Once again, you can see that it’s classified as a super bulky level 6 yarn on the label, but an 11.5 mm hook is recommended!

I had so much fun working with this soft and thick yarn!  I decided to have this cowl wrap around just once since it is stiffer and thicker than the Phat yarn.  I ended up using two skeins for one cowl, so it costed only $11 in yarn material.  Look at those gorgeously plump stitches!  The cowl pictured below looks like it could be a basket too ;)

Here is my finished Jumbo Triple Luxe Cowl using Biggie yarn!  The giant stitches give it an arm knitted look which is very popular these days!

Crocheting with a jumbo hook and super thick yarn means that this project goes by incredibly quickly.  After I figured out my numbers with the first grey cowl, I whipped up the second gold cowl in 15 MINUTES!  It is so satisfying being able to complete a project in one sitting.  You could complete four of these luxurious cowls in one hour!

The height and thickness of this cowl makes it the perfect piece to snuggle in!  It will be your shield against the snow and strong winds!
