Intimate Backstage Portraits of a Broadway Star

Always prepared with a camera handy in case a scene strikes her, the photographer Lexie Moreland never tries to reproduce a missed moment — as soon as she’s consciously looking, she says, the potential for revelation is lost.

Recently, she documented the actor Michael C. Hall’s nightly preparations for his starring role in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” on Broadway. “I was drawn to shoot Michael preparing for ‘Hedwig’ because I was curious to see what kind of space he would create for himself amidst the army of people charged with transforming him from a man into a woman,” Moreland says. “He’s a very private, insular person, and I watched as he morphed into a character who’s the definition of brash, outspoken bravado.”
