meteorite-strike

(NASA)  How did this spherule come to be on the Moon? When a meteorite strikes the Moon, the energy of the impact melts some of the splattering rock, a fraction of which might cool into tiny glass beads. Many of these glass beads were present in lunar soil samples returned to Earth by the Apollo missions. Pictured above is one such glass spherule that measures only a quarter of a millimeter across. This spherule is particularly interesting because it has been victim to an even smaller impact. A miniature crater is visible on the upper left, surrounded by a fragmented area caused by the shockwaves of the small impact. By dating many of these impacts, astronomers can estimate the history of cratering on our Moon.

Artists depiction of the mysterious Tunguska event.

On June 30 1908 a massive explosion equivalent to a multi-megaton nuclear weapon exploded over Siberia. The explosion occurred somewhere between 5-10km above the ground and created a fireball that engulfed the forest destroying everything within 20km of the explosion. Some people have theorised that it may have been a black hole collapsing in on itself, or a piece of anti-matter colliding with Earth.

Most scientists agree that it was most likely a mountain sized piece of comet made up mostly of ice and rock. However due to the fact there was no crater or any remnants of the comet it lead to speculation.

Recently a scientist claimed to have identified pieces of rock that he believes is from the event. This however has not yet been confirmed or undergone any sort of official review.

Working on removing the base for what I think was a rotary clothesline. Dig down to expose the concrete, bash it with a sledge hammer, remove bit of concrete, dig some more. The hole is about 2 foot deep and looks like a meteorite strike and still no end in sight.

Sometimes the shortest split second in time changes the direction of our lives.  A seemingly innocuous decision rattles our whole world like a meteorite striking Earth.  Entire lives have been swiveled and flipped upside down, for better or worse, on the strength of an unpredictable event.  And these events are always happening. However good or bad a situation is now, it will change.  That’s the one thing you can count on.  So when life is good, enjoy it.  Don’t go looking for something better every second.  Happiness never comes to those who don’t appreciate what they have while they have it.
