African Union criticizes US for ‘taking many of our people as slaves’ and not taking refugees

[IMAGE: African Heads of State pose for a group photo ahead of the start of the 28th African Union summit in Addis Ababa on 30 January, 2017.]

The head of the African Union has criticized Donald Trump’s ban on immigration from some Muslim-majority countries, saying it presents “one of the greatest challenges” for the continent.

As representatives of the AU’s 53 member states met in Addis Ababa for a two-day summit, the chief of its commission said the bloc was entering “very turbulent times” after the US President’s election.

“The very country to which many of our people were taken as slaves during the transatlantic slave trade has now decided to ban refugees from some of our countries,” said Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

“What do we do about this? Indeed, this is one of the greatest challenges to our unity and solidarity.”

Mr Trump’s executive order prevented people with passports from three African nations – Libya, Somalia and Sudan – from travelling to the US. It also blocked visas for citizens from four Middle Eastern countries – Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Iran.

The President has also suspended all US refugee programmes for 120 days, and ended the flow of Syrian refugees to America indefinitely.

Also speaking in Ethiopia, the UN Secretary General commended African countries for opening their borders to refugees and people fleeing violence while other parts of the world, including the developed West, close boundaries and build walls.

Antonio Guterres, attending his first AU summit as the UN chief, said: “African nations are among the world’s largest and most generous hosts of refugees.

“African borders remain open for those in need of protection when so many borders are being closed, even in the most developed countries in the world.”

Mr Guterres didn’t make a direct reference to the recent executive orders signed by Mr Trump, which also included a commitment to build a wall along the Mexican border, but his comment drew enthusiastic applause from hundreds of African leaders, officials and dignitaries who attended the opening of the summit, the Associated Press reported.

Don’t know if yall are just trying to be funny now or what, but these are things I have been asked before. Haha I’ve been asked about how hard it was to get my visa when I was traveling to another state one time. Like some of you were shocked by that anon and some responded with these and I don’t know if they are genuine or not because the only time I’ve met someone outside my state who knew where and what New Mexico is, was in England. I shit you not someone in England had a better grasp of our geography than any American I had met in my 18 years up to that point.

Not long after I arrived in the United States, I met an American woman at a friend’s home. She told me with apparent pride that her daughter was a cheerleader. I did not know what kind of leader that was. Hearing her explanation, I could not bring myself to present a compliment, as she obviously expected. I only wished that my eyes did not betray my disdain as I said to my- self, “I guess this American woman has never dreamed of her daughter being a leader cheered by men.” I felt fortunate that I had been “brainwashed” to want to be a revolutionary instead of a cheerleader… .

Was “brainwashing” girls to desire to be “young vanguards” in socialist construction more oppressive and limiting than ’“brainwashing” girls to desire to be cheerleaders for football games? No.

—  Wang Zheng; “Some of Us: Chinese Women Growing Up in the Mao Era”

This week’s material is titled Woman Suffrage and Politics. Signed and authored by Carrie Chapman Catt and published in New York in 1923, three years after the addition of the 19th amendment, this book discusses the intersection where women’s suffrage and American politics met.

The book states that the movement was galvanized by two previous ones, dubbed “the man movement”, which attempted to evolve the control of governments in the favor of the people, and “the woman movement”, in which women wanted to be free of the patriarchal systems that law, religion, tradition, and customs bound them to. After these two were successful, suffrage was the obvious next step.

Later, in the political realm, a surprising majority were in favor of both black men’s and white women’s suffrage, but the rhetoric was that both were not likely to be accepted if done at the same time. The black man was decided to be first, with the phrase “this is the negro’s hour” being the common response to women’s appeals.

“The woman’s hour will come.” Between the adoption of the 15th amendment (March 30, 1870), and 1910 were 40 tiresome years of suffragettes wishing, waiting, and hoping for their hour to come. Eventually, the women’s hour came in the form of referendum votes on a state-by-state basis. Some states took the referendum to the supreme court, hailing unconstitutionality, but grievances were thrown out one by one. Eventually the 19th amendment was passed in 1920, and remains in law today and forever.

This reading was important to me because not only was it written by a woman who had to fight tirelessly for her rights, but also it came to me two days after there were two women on the ballot to be president of the United States. Regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum, the ability to bear witness to history is a phenomena to be cherished and celebrated. A meager 97 years ago, women could not vote. We sure have come a long way.

I Love You {Jason Smut}

word count: 2.4k (because I love Jason and oh well.)
**Rated MA for mature audiences only!**
Notes: Smut / Fluff! I fell in LOVE with Jason Crouse while watching The Good Wife, JDM is such an amazing actor AND ALL THOSE UNF scenes with him in it, my heart! @ladylorelitany and @may85 fics gave me the inspiration to share my love for this man. Tagging you in it because thank you!! Hope you like mine ;o;
Gifs are not mine.
Summary: Jason comes over to get his mind off Alicia and (Y/N) was always the perfect distraction but after a month of silence, he has some explaining to do.

I have known Jason for a while, being one of the first few people he met coming to the state and he just stuck around my life after that like some magical spell I couldn’t wake up from, he always told me it was because I knew how to brew a great cup of coffee. In all fairness, that really could honestly be why he stuck around, but as we talked more and started to hang around together, we realized we just clicked.

I always made sure I was there for him whenever he was having a rough day, I wanted to be his backbone, I wanted him to know I was there. That I loved him.

Why Ereri/Riren should be embraced, not discouraged.

Recently, me and a close friend of mine were having an argument on whether or not Ereri/Riren should be canon, and why it’s even a ship to begin with. And that made me wonder, “Why did we, the fandom, even ship this to begin? And why does it make such perfect sense to us?” So, I decided to dig deeper into this ship.

First off, let me clear up a few things. Ereri/Riren is NOT pedophila. The legal age of consent in Japan IS fifteen, and Eren Jaeger IS fifteen. So if someone were to write him sleeping with Levi in a fanfic, it’s isn’t pedophila.
“But the age of consent in America is eighteen, so it is pedophila!” Uh, no. It’s not.
A person I recently met stated that if Isayama had been American, he would’ve written Eren off as eighteen. And like I said, fifteen is the legal age of consent it JAPAN. And if you look at other shonēn and shoujo manga/anime, the majority of the protagonists/main characters are 14/15 and older. So if they were to be included in any fan fictions, it wouldn’t be pedophila.

Second, don’t write it off as “gross” or “disgusting” or “immoral”. That’s just bigotry, and you should get the fuck off of Tumblr. The pairing of Eren, the last hope for humanity, and Levi, humanity’s strongest soldeir, wouldn’t be that terrible. I understand that in an anime like Attack on Titan, it’s hard to be “romantic and lovey-dovey”, but who gives a shit? Yumikuri is canon, and they barely show any love except for Ymir’s protective nature towards Christa/Historia. Speaking of protective nature, let’s get this out of the way: I doubt Erekasa will ever be canon. Sure, Mikasa has a protective nature towards Eren, and her comrade’s joke about Eren being her “boyfriend”, but that’s only because she’s so….well….protective. Eren has shown no interest in Mikasa whatsoever, and I’m sure he only sees her a sister because they’re like….no, ARE family.

[☆ Side Note: Petra × Levi was never canon or confirmed. Levi showed no interest in Petra romantically, and Petra loved and admired Levi’s dedication and strength as a leader. Nothing more, nothing less. ☆]

Third, if you ever were to consider the possibility of it being canon, you have to take in the fact that it’s Attack on Titan. So, it’s basically an apolocalypse/kill-or-be-killed scenario. Titans are slaughtering hundreds of people and you could very well die the next day, so who gives a fuck who you love and who you wanna be with as long as the feeling is mutual? No one’s gonna care about the age difference in the middle of a slaughter fest.

Fourth, the ship’s representation.
I mean, it represents the ‘Wings of Freedom’ for Christ’s sake.
Eren, humanity’s last hope. Levi, humanity’s strongest soldeir.
The colors of the ‘Wings of Freedom’ are:
White: light, goodness, innocence, positivity, and hope. (Eren)
And blue: trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, and truth. (Levi)
I mean, what’s strength without hope? You can’t have one without the other.

Lastly, the pairing as a whole.
This link explains Levi and Eren’s relationship more thoroughly than I ever could, so I’d encourage you to check it out:

The symbolism in their first meeting, what happened after the courtroom scene, their conversation after the incident with the female titan, it’s all so…meaningful.
It’s not a disgusting, perverted ship: it’s probably one of the most beautiful, thoughtful ships out there and I support it to the fullest extent possibly.

Jayne Mansfield & Mickey Hargitay marriage

They first met at the Latin Quarter on may 13, 1956 - during the time that Mansfield was performing in the Broadway play ‘Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?’ - days before they met, Mansfield joked with the press that she hoped to find her prince charming. About the day that they first met, Mickey later stated: “I saw a blonde girl with a milkshake, and some other people were sitting, the moment that I made eye contact with her with was love at first sight”. Hargitay proposed to Mansfield with a $5,000 10-carat diamond ring on November 6, 1957 ($210,000 in 2015 dollars). And on January 13, 1958 they got married. Jayne wore a fabulous pinky lace mermaid gown. All the eyes were on them, thousands of people came to give the best wishes to the couple. Jayne and Mickey were described as inseparable.

Personal Post

Okay everyone, well. Since several of you expressed interest in knowing, I’ve found someone out in another state. I met her through here, actually, though she no longer has a blog.

I’ve been working on planning a trip out to her in the near future.
I have no idea what this means for my job (including my on-call position with GW), but I will be pursuing a store manager position with them, and hope that it lands me in her state. Thankfully there are many in the vicinity, but still, maybe a long shot.
Failing that I have other options but I’d prefer to take that route as I have the most experience in it.

I’m not gonna answer TOO many questions but honestly this has been utterly life changing for me and I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy talking to someone. I certainly haven’t made even a similar emotional connection before.
Anyway. Don’t want to make the post too long but a relocation would really interrupt the content, but be sure I will never leave you guys unless I have no choice in the matter.

For now, adieu.

Do you have a post about how you and your fiancé met? I wanna read the story!!

everyone always thinks that we met when i studied in england, but we actually met here in the states (he came over here on a golf scholarship)!

we met through one of my good pals that i studied abroad with who was/still is dating his best mate! the ironic thing is, we honestly didn’t even want to meet -he had semi-recently gotten out of a relationship and i had, had a rough time with a boy, so we both were really not interested in dating or anything of the sort.

anyways, after our friends begging, we both finally relented and agreed to get drinks with my gal pal and her boy. we went to this sort of pub-like place and had beer and pasties and just chatted&bantered for a few hours. we immediately hit it off, i thought he was so damn cool.

even though we didn’t want to meet, from that point on we became essentially inseparable. he’s the best - so genuine, spontaneous, intelligent, adventurous, witty, driven (i’ll spare you the sappiness). he immediately got on really well with my family (which is incredibly important to me!) and we had the best time doing the simplest things together, like watching premier league football while stuffing our faces with doughnuts every saturday morning or going to the library together (but he’s also always up for a spontaneous road trip or random getaway).

he’s a gem and i’m lucky to have him! x

On this date Tallahassee became the capital of Florida during the second legislative session. It was chosen as it was roughly equidistant from St. Augustine and Pensacola, which had been the capitals of the Spanish colonies of East Florida and West Florida. The first session of Florida’s Legislative Council—as a territory of the United States—met on July 22, 1822 at Pensacola and members from St. Augustine traveled fifty-nine days by water to attend. The second session was in St. Augustine and required western delegates to travel perilously around the peninsula on a twenty-eight day trek. During this session, it was decided that future meetings should be held at a half-way point. Two appointed commissioners selected Tallahassee, at that point an abandoned Apalachee settlement, as a halfway point. Text from wikipedia and image from the State Archives of Florida.

1st October, Maud Wagner

The Calendar Woman for 1st October is Maud Wagner (1877-1961)

Maud Wagner was the first known female tattoo artist in the United States and one of the last tattoo artists to work by hand without using a modern machine. Maud originally worked as an aerialist and contortionist in travelling circuses and it was here that she met Gus Wagner, a tattoo artist who considered himself the most artistically marked man in the states.

They met in 1904 and Maud - who was captivated by his body art – exchanged a romantic date for a lesson in tattooing. Several years later they married and raised a daughter who would also go on to become a tattoo artist.

Learning from Gus, Maud became skilled at giving traditional hand-poked tattoos and gave up her life with the circus to become America’s first professional female tattooist. She kept travelling though, as she and Gus traversed the States working both as tattoo artists and tattoo attractions at county fairs and amusement parks.

Hi! Could I have a one shot with Jungkook and you moving into your first house together? Thank you!

WARNINGS: Language, suggestions of smut

AUTHOR’S NOTE: It’s just a little baby fic! I just kind of wanted to show the little small ways that I think Jungkook would be romantic. I think he’d be almost like a very excited little kid who’s happy to have such a cool, mature s/o.
