Downtown Diva

Jerome 5:31 spring 2014 rtw

For Jerome Lamaar more is more. Hyper- embellished pieces like the acid-washed boyfriend jeans bejeweled with crystals and the iridescent sequined harem-pants are ultra-indulgent and glam yet still downtown- cool enough to rule the street. Part disco-diva and part high-style goddess the collection is as apropos for shimmying it up in Studio 54 as it is for sipping martinis at a hip art gallery soiree. Bianca Jagger might approve.

Prep in her Step

Michael Kors Spring 2014

Lauren Hutton didn’t mind borrowing her signature collegiate look from the boys. And the fresh-faced, all-American golden girl has become as synonymous with a cool, laid-back boyish-prep as she has with her endearing gap-toothed grin. Michael Kors’ spring collection channeled Laura Hutton circa 1970’s. The result was a gallant menswear-inspired chic with flirty feminine appeal (courtesy of the 1940’s femme-noir references blended in) and unexpected details like a  circular plush fur wrap-ring and pants-less bordello references.made the collection feel thoroughly modern.

Dancing Queen

Jenny Packham Spring 2014 rtw

The vibe was groovy gentry at the Jenny Packham show, the designer described the motif of her presentation as being a “‘70’s take on austere Edwardian attire” and she pulled off the fusion of the two disparate worlds- of Duchess and Diva- brilliantly. Regal pearl, Swarovski crystal beading and petite silver marbles studded flirty shift dresses with floaty bottoms and long fluid 70’s inspired gowns. The dusty palette of mint, peach, beige, mauve, chartreuse and baby blue was both antiqued and retro but felt completely modern when blended with sumptuous embellishment and chic silhouettes. It’s Studio 54 meets Stiff upper lip and the result is nothing less than fabulous.

Oh, Dr. Zhivago!

Ruffian Spring 2014 rtw

In the 1960’s, Julie Christie possessed the requisite willowy, fawn-like good-looks of the British mod-era golden girl, but unlike the other fresh-faced, ingenues of the era, she carried herself with the sophistication and polished savoire-faire of a high-society Capote ‘Swan’. Ruffian’s spring collection drew from a pale Sixties’  macaron palette and ladylike silhouettes with mod overtones reminiscent of Christie’s chic elegance .

“To be a woman is a great adventure; To drive men mad is a heroic thing.”
