melodic-patterns

anonymous asked:

What are your favorite guitar riffs?

Oh man. I’m on my first coffee of the morning.

Let’s see: Led Zeppelin “Since I’ve been loving you” is way up there. Also, “Rock and Roll” and just about every solo on Led One, Hmm. Layla (electric version) by Eric Clapton. and his guitar work on the Beatles’ “While my Guitar Gently Weeps”. Santana “Black Magic Woman”. Pink Floyd “Comfortably Numb”. “Eruption” by Van Halen. Prince’s cover of “While my Guitar Gently Weeps”  as played at the 2004 ceremonies at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Something about that song seems to bring out the best in guitarists. Sam.

PS I am aware that a riff is a repetitive melodic pattern used in improvisation and not the same as a solo but I don’t know how I could have answered that question. Besides lots of people, even musicians, say “riff” when they mean “solo”.
