I was reading this article, which I understand cannot be held as completely accurate and does not necessarily apply to everyone with ADHD, but it made me think a hell of a lot about Matt. In no way do I mean to romanticize of glorify this condition. I only believe that the traits discussed completely fit my idea of Matt.
1. He Has an Active Mind
His head is constantly swirling with brilliant ideas. How to improve this, how to speed up that. It’s one of the many things that keep him awake at night. He’d rather tinker with this and toy with that than be idly asleep.
2. He Listens but Doesn’t Absorb What is Being Said
Mello will talk to him and he definitely hears that deep voice but he can’t hold onto the words. He can’t string them together and form meaning because his cigarette is still burning in the ashtray and Mello talks with his hands a lot. But Mello surprisingly isn’t frustrated by this. He doesn’t really care that he has to repeat things to Matt because hearing his thoughts and plans being spoken again and again helps him to understand them better and see potential flaws.
3 & 19. He Has Difficulty Staying On Task/ He Has Many Tasks Going at the Same Time
He is chock full of so many brilliant ideas with no sense of time management. He starts a project, he tires of it, he moves on to the next. He goes back and forth and back and forth putting in a tireless amount of effort with no seemingly significant outcome. His half finished ideas disappoint him but Mello appreciates them, finished or not, because he knows the effort was just dispersed instead of focused.
He’s gone out to get Mello a bar of chocolate and comes back with scrap metal for a robotic prototype.
He started the day off with the goal to finish his car’s tune up and now he’s browsing interior paint online because he senses Mello’s distaste for the chipped living room lime.
4. He Becomes Anxious Easily
There’s a reason Mello does the majority of the shopping and the.. going outing thing.
5. He Can’t Concentrate When He’s Emotional
He steers clear of things he knows will evoke an emotional response from him. But that doesn’t mean the occasional slip up isn’t bound to happen. Mello has, on more than one occasion, found a distraught and sobbing Matt in his car following an ASPCA advertisement. Quiet, consoling promises to “adopt all the puppies” follow but it’s not always enough to bring Matt back to his work.
6. He Concentrates Too Intensely
He will overthink things so much that the original thought is blown entirely out of proportion. Mello is there to ground him and bring everything into a reasonable perspective.
7. It’s Difficult For Him to Stop a Task When He’s In the Zone
Once he’s managed to concentrate he can’t seem to un-concentrate. He spends hours on his work once he’s gotten into a steady rhythm, often working so late into the night that he’s still awake when Mello fixes his morning cup of hot chocolate. Of course Mello worries and does his best to keep Matt on a regular sleep schedule, but he can understand the significance of this “battle zone” as Matt calls it. It doesn’t happen all that often and Matt would be devastated should he lose the ambitious focus that’s so hard to come by.
10. He Has Social Anxiety
He’s reserved and appears distant. When he does manage to speak it’s always something apathetically sarcastic that’s meant to come off as comedic. He’s perceived as rude by most but he would rather stay inside anyway with a certain blond that understands his humor perfectly.
11. He is Deeply Intuitive
Matt seems as if he’s full of endless ideas. And, well, you’re kinda right.
12. He Thinks Outside the Box
His obscure solutions and ability to see things from numerous perspectives is only one of many reasons why Mello considers him to be his greatest ally and companion.
13. He is Impatient and Fidgety
Table top tapping and leg bouncing are not uncommon. If Matt is required to wait Mello is sure to be prepared with gaming devices, chargers, and battery packs. Should all else fail, Mello knows what he must do. He’ll give a sigh, he’ll roll his eyes, and then he’ll plant himself down in front of Matt and let the man do the unthinkable: braid his hair.
15. He is Disorganized
If not for Mello, Matt would be wallowing in an endless sea of papers and takeout boxes. The blond declutters Matt’s space and mind and falls neatly into place within his heart. (Sappy but oh-so true.)
16. He Needs Space to Pace
Mello’s only complaint arises when Matt feels the need to game as he ambles about the apartment. The dork has gotten enough forehead booboos for the both of them and Mello wonders when Matt-shaped indents will begin to appear on their walls.
Go ahead and give the article a read. I skipped 8, 9, 14, and 18 because I don’t think they apply to Matt. I do, however, believe 17 and 20 apply but I’m content with the wording in the article and don’t feel the need to add anything further.
