mei loves the little mermaid

Watch on

I liked the original tragic Hans Christian Anderson tale when I was little (because I was weird like that), but Disney’s The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite movies when I was little.  “Poor Unfortunate Souls” is my favorite Disney villain song of all time.  The villain tells Ariel all these lies, but spins it in a way that makes it look like a good way to get a boyfriend.  Because obviously, if you’re an overweight girl or a skinny guy, it’s impossible to be in a relationship, right?  If you want the guy, you’re going to have to change yourself and oh, also, he doesn’t want you speaking or expressing yourself.  “Body language” is all you need.  Now older, I see this as her saying, “All you need to be is a silent object who is only good for sex to get a man.  And a man is all you need to be happy.”

“It’s she who holds her tongue who gets her man.” is the villain line that really gets me.

It had already been established that Ariel had wanted to be human even before she met the prince, but the villain twists it into something where her humanity is completely dependent on the guy.  I just… really love this movie.  :’D
