Vixen Gets A Voice

Good news! Megalyn Echikunwoke is set to voice Mari McCabe, aka Vixen, in the upcoming animated series!  Marc Guggenheim, who works as a producer for both CW hits, Arrow and The Flash, stated that Vixen’s story will be a “coming of age tale.” Vixen the animated series will also feature the voices of Grant Gustin (Barry Allen), Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen), Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), and Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon).

Megalyn Echikunwoke is the voice of Mari Jiwe McCabe/Vixen in the upcoming CW Seed six-part animated series Vixen, which will tell one complete 30-minute tale.

Ms. Echikunwoke’s (pronounced eh-chee-koon-WALK-eh) credits includes M.E. Tara Price on CSI: Miami, the grown-up Isabelle Tyler on the USA sci-fi series The 4400, April on House of Lies, and Simone Baptiste on A&E’s upcoming Damien, based on The Omen movies.

She’s a busy actress and beautiful to boot, and I really hope she makes the leap to the Arrowverse playing Mari/Vixen in live-action as well.

Vixen Animated Series Gets Cast and Promotion at SDCC

One of DC Comics few Black female characters is finally getting some attention after being kept on the “bench” or ice for the last few years.

The CW has cast CSI actress Megalyn Echikunwoke as the voice actress for the upcoming seed animated mini-series.

WB and DC Comics Entertainment will be promoting the show during SDCC on of the their Saturday night panels which will also include the official debut of the Supergirl pilot. Additionally Vixen will be featured on sponsored bags.

Mari “Vixen” Jiwe McCabe debuted in DC Comics in 34 years ago (and was scheduled to appear earlier) but spent years bouncing from book to book and team to team. The character finally go some attention when Dwayne McDuffie wrote the character in the DCAU and made her a key character in Justice League Unlimited (where she was voiced by Gina Torres) and in his run on the Justice League comic. As a result of those appearances the character became hugely popular with several toys produced. She was also given a mini-series written by G. Willow Wilson.

But with Duffie’s dismissal from DC Comics the character floundered. While seen in the new 52 as part of Justice League International but disappeared early on in the book’s run and didn’t appear again until cameo in Justice League in 2013

It’s good to see the character get the attention she deserves. Let’s hope that DC Comics can find a place for her in their comic line-up - perhaps they should try “Batgirling” a team-up book with Zatanna and Vixen as a pair of globetrotting performers/models by day, kick ass superheroes by night because I would totally read that.

VIXEN IS HERE! Congrats to  Megalyn Echikunwoke!

“ Procurei o amor, que me mentiu.

Pedi a vida mais do que ela dava; Eterna sonhadora edificava,

meu castelo de luz que me caiu.

Tanto clarão nas trevas refulgiu, e tanto beijo a boca me queimava!

E era o sol que os longe deslumbrava,

igual a tanto sol que me fugiu!

Passei a vida a amar e a esquecer …

atrás do sol dum dia outro aquecer as brumas dos atalhos por onde ando …

E este amor que assim me vai fugindo é igual a outro amor, que vai surgindo,

que há de partir também … nem eu sei quando.”

I'm so happy with Megalyn Echikunwoka voicing Vixen. But I also think it's telling that her physical features fit the Vixen character. Having said that, what are my chances of getting her on Arrow in the flesh in S4? I have an uncontrollable desire to have Megalyn Echikunwoka and Ciara Renée in scenes with David Ramsey. These are the type of scenes Arrow is severely lacking that are indicative of my representation in the superhero TV verse. Let's fix this mindset in season 4.

We have to launch Vixen as an animated series first.  Then we can talk about Megalyn joining Arrow in “live action.”  :)
