The iconic Boston Store building at 8th and State Streets. Notice the hideous two-story building to the north and you’ll understand why so many city residents are concerned about the redevelopment of the bayfront GAF site.
Beneath this clock was (is) the meeting point of many a courting couple in Edinburgh, “Meet me under the Binns Clock” I suppose most people call it Frasers clock now Binns was taken over in 1976 by House of Fraser.
The clock is not as old as a lot of people think, it was attached to the exterior in 1962 and entertainingly the miniature pipers you see used to circled the base at 7 and 37 minutes past the hour playing Scotland the Brave. After a deluge of complaints the volume had to be turned down. Allegedly people almost a mile away were disturbed by this regular musical interlude. Fantastic though isn’t it! ?
