With so many different things to stress about such as student loans and finances, submitting assignments on time, studying for finals, gaining work experience, or even fitting your online course resources around your life, it can be easy to succumb to negative thoughts and rising stress whilst studying for your degree. I’ve listed 5 positive habits that all students can benefit from developing at college!!
“I’m bipolar. I’ve been in a psych ward more times than I would like to admit. I’m also in recovery. It’s been a few years since I’ve had a problem with either one. I’m not taking any medication because I didn’t like the way it made me feel. But since I am not on medication, I am high risk. In order to feel comfortable, being on no medication, I have to do certain other things: meditation, sleeping right, eating right, talking to people, doing leisure activities, and really just checking in with myself. I try to write every day, read every day. So, it’s a lot of different habits that guide my life—but it’s not like it’s a chore.
Sleeping, in particular, is a big part of my life. Some people think, ‘Oh, I can just stay up for a few days.’ Not me. I have to get a certain number of hours of sleep every day. And I can’t get over a certain number of hours of sleep every day.
It simply got to a point where either I was going to let my illness rule me or do whatever I had to do so it doesn’t.
I’m very ambitious. I act and dance and I want to start a non-profit. To do that I have to take care of myself.”
“Which of these things do you think is most important?”
“Meditation. It brings me to all those other things. I might be running all day. I take time to meditate and I realize that my stomach is rumbling. ‘Hmm, I’m kind of tired. Maybe I need to take a nap.’ ‘Hmm, my stomach’s rumbling. I need to eat.’ Or ‘I have all these thoughts running through my head. After this, I should write.’ I focus on posture. I meditate when I dance. Just mindfulness. I can’t imagine life without meditation.”
“What kind of non-profit do you want to start?”
“Mental health services for the homeless. Especially here, at Central Square, if someone is off their medication or is having an episode, the first called are the police, and the second is the EMT, neither of which has extensive mental health training. My big audacious goal is to create a program where you have some sort of a mental health professional, or even a mentor, either be there when the police come, or be at the hospital to calm them down. You can check the stats: the criminal justice system is the number one provider of mental health services in the United States. It’s sad in so many ways, and it doesn’t have to be like that.”
Hi guys! People have asked me how to get into spirituality. I must admit it took me a while to finally write this post and answer the question. Spirituality is such a big term & people practice their way to connecting to something higher (or to themselves) in very different ways. It’s a personal journey, I must admit :-) However, i also had to start somewhere to be in a place where i can understand these “spiritual” terms and concepts that i now use, so i thought i would give it a try and come up with some tips and advice for anyone who’s interested or for anyone who would want to start a spiritual path! 💖
Following your inner guidance: Your inner guidance (or intuition) will always guide you and lead you where you need to go. It will provide you with answers and inspiration, you just need to listen to it :-) If a book will serve you, your intuition will probably speak and tell you. Read this post I wrote about intuition for more info!
Spending time by yourself: In my opinion, connecting to yourself is one of the most important step there is to start. by spending time alone, I don’t mean to never go out haha. What i mean is to get to know your own energy. I always mention this but in today’s world there’s too many voices and opinions! It’s important to reconnect to the deeper parts of yourself. You can do this by journaling & by…
Meditating: Meditation will enable you to get in touch with that higher part of yourself, to your intuition and to your heart. Meditate everyday for at least 5-10 mins and trust me, you will see your mood and life change for the better <3 (New to meditation? Here’s a video that will help you)
Researching, learning, studying: There’s tons of books out there that will help you. Self help, self growth and spiritual books will introduce you to new ideas and concepts. /Here’s a book masterlist/ by @indigoschool. Choose the one that interests you the most! Follow your curiosity, it will guide you :-) /Here are my favorite youtube channels on youtube/ (some of them are self growth channels and others more spiritual, subscribe to the ones you like the most!) /Koi Fresco/ on youtube has lots of videos that will probably help you a lot as well! Follow people on tumblr who inspire you. Importanttip: While learning is fun and helpful, also remember to connect to yourself. Many answers you seek are inside, listen to your inner guidance!
Keeping an open mind but trusting your truth: You don’t have to agree with everyone & that’s ok and normal. Not everything will resonate as true. When i don’t believe in something i kind of put the idea in the back of my mind as “maybe.. or maybe not”. I had to experience many things before believing in them haha.
Try new things!: Interested in crystals? Buy some! Interested in yoga? try it! Don’t be afraid to be a beginner, start new habits, follow your curiosity.
Taking care of yourself: So, how did I learn about all of these new concepts? Because the way i was living wasn’t serving me anymore! I was feeling depressed and i knew i could be happier. So i started meditating, eating healthy and reading self help books. When i started taking care of myself, many things in my life shifted, without even knowing… i was getting into spirituality. This is honestly the best tip out there, to take care of yourself. What brings you joy will lead you to where you need to go. Follow your passions & curiosity & let go of everything that does not serve you anymore (including toxic friendships or habits).
Be patient: It’s a journey, be patient with yourself!
This is all i have for now :-) Hope these tips help you. If you have any question, feel free to ask!
- Sit alone (or with someone, if isolating yourself would have a negative effect).
- Buy a cheap face mask and put it on.
- Read a book.
- Watch a movie.
- Video chat with someone.
- Call someone.
- Clear up your contacts and consider removing people you don’t need.
- Write a journal.
- Write a letter (to yourself or someone else).
- Drink some water, herbal tea, hot chocolate or juice.
- Eat a healthy snack that you like.
- Drive aimlessly (but safely).
- Write a poem/song.
- Listen to music.
- Be with a pet.
- Cry, then do one of the others.
- Give yourself a massage.
- Have a bath/shower.
- Volunteer with something that means a lot to you.
- Treat yourself (not impulsively, but something you want).
- Allow yourself to feel how you feel and talk to a therapist/mental health charity.
- Do your makeup/nails.
- Go to a park and watch the world go by, either paying attention to the details or releasing all focus (except safety).
- Watch relaxing videos on YouTube.
- Forgive yourself and others (this does not mean allowing people to mistreat you).
- Say no (sometimes it’s necessary or you’ll be worn down).
- Embrace your “flaws” and remind yourself that things we see are usually edited.
- Lightly learn some interesting trivia.
- Unplug for a little while (but be safe).
We do so much to help our friends, family and others, but often forget about ourselves. Take 10+ minutes a week to do something to make yourself feel refreshed. Things may be tough right now. They may get better or it may be something that doesn’t, but you are worthy of happiness and support. There is no shame in seeking therapy and it would benefit nearly every person on earth. Taking care of yourself is not giving up or being selfish - it’s incredibly important.
Balance is key. In everything you do. Dance all night long and practice yoga the next day. Drink wine but don’t forget your green juice. Eat chocolate when your heart wants it and kale salad when your body needs it. Wear high heels on Saturday and walk barefoot on Sunday. Go shopping at the mall and then sit down and meditate in your bedroom. Live high and low. Move and stay still. Embrace all sides of who you are and live your authentic truth! Be brave and bold and spontaneous and loud and let that complement your abilities to find silence and patience and modesty and peace. Aim for balance. Make your own rules and don’t let anybody tell you how to live according to theirs.
I’ve started to feel unhappy with my body again, and unhappy with who I am in general, so I’ve decided to do something about it. The exercise will not only do wonders for my physical health, but will also add a boost to my mental health.
