mediocre young adult writer problems

  • Me: I want to write a good, suspenseful horror story with cool elements and imagery and dread!
  • Also me: I want to write a nice, feelgood coming of age story with a small ensemble of characters with individual stories that's just full of hope and joy
  • Also me: I want to write a five-part epic of fantastic creatures of non-existent lands and hundreds of characters with intertwining stories where everything is neatly connected and flows like dozens of domino lines being knocked over
  • Also me: I want to write about aliens and a tight-knit crew on a spaceship fighting for their humanity, and explore so many dystopian concepts and worlds without any limitations!
  • Also me: I want to write about the zombie apocalypse and redesign everything we ever knew about what a living dead creature would be like.
  • Also me: I want to write a love story! Love finds a way! Just two - or more - people being cutesy and fluffy and adorable, trying to get by in their own lives and struggle but struggle ~*♥together.
  • Also me: I want to write about robots, a future controlled by robots, or just a robot that doesn't know it's a robot, explore consciousness, what makes us human, you know?
  • Also me: I want to write a FAIRY TALE, just a good old classic-feeling fairy tale that's full of magic and wonder :')
  • Also me: I want to wr

Every year I do this darned thing so let’s goooooo

Working Title: Lucid, cause I couldn’t think of another thing and I’m like, queen of short titles.
Genre: young… adult? Is that… a genre?
Word Count: ~90k I reckon

AT THE START DO YOU:

Have an outline?  [[zach piona voice]] I’ve NEVER missed an outline.
Scene-by-scene? yeah I guess I do, not as precise as in 2014 but it’s enough, hopefully.
Know how it starts? yah but I don’t like beginnings they’re hard as fuck.
Know how it ends? yah it’s fun \o/
Have your climax in order? I’m trying to keep it PG so no climaxing, thank you.
Have your main characters yet? I do \o/ There are four \o/
Plan to draw on your experiences? I’m not good at drawing, no.

IS YOUR WORK GOING TO BE:

Funny? first I’d have to be funny and since that’s a hard no already….
Serious? it’s the only way bAY-BEE
Sad? I’m sad
Semi-Autobiographical? UH it’s, no, actually not. The story isn’t about me, it’s just the embodiment of my fears and of my experiences. The main character isn’t me and the people in her life aren’t people in my life, she just plays a part in situations where parallels could be drawn between things I’ve experienced and the thoughts I’ve had… about those experiences and the effect those had… on me. I think.
Based on another story? only the other stories I’ve had that I bastardised

HOW MUCH HAVE YOU PLANNED? HAVE YOU USED:

A paper journal? save the trees, no
A computer? [[jacksfilms voice]] no the fuck is you
Index cards? index cards are for people who got time and I ain’t got no time
Bulleted lists? I’m pro-gun control so no bullets, no.
Character Charts? they’re too useful, no.
Character formulas? don’t ever talk about chemistry at me.

ODDS AND ENDS:

Favorite writing resource? m’head
A line you would like to use: “Jub Jub wants rub rub.” *sitcom laugh track plays* Thank you, thank you, I’d like to thank Jacksfilms for 80% of my sense of humour.
A scene you would like to include: I hope to include all of them, honestly.
A concept you would like to explore: UHH ACTUALLY I DO HAVE A CONCEPT THIS YEAR, I NEVER DO BUT THIS YEAR I- YES. SO THE CONCEPT IS, BASICALLY, WHAT I WAS THINKING OF, THAT SO MANY TIMES YOU WANT TO HELP PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE AND YOU END UP HURTING THEM AND EVEN THOUGH YOUR INTENTIONS WERE GOOD SOMETIMES YOU JUST GOTTA NOT BE THE HERO BUT THE SILENT OBSERVER OR RATHER THE PERSON WHO’S READY TO HELP AS SOON AS IT’S SAFE AND THE PERSON THEY WANT TO HELP GOT THEMSELVES TO A PLACE WHERE THEY CAN BE HELPED. CRYSTAL CLEAR, RIGHT?!
A cliché you would like avoid: why would I want to avoid the only thing I’m good at?
A character you would like to use: G, I feel like it’s the year of the character G, I predict it will make up roughly 1/20th of my novel.

FORWARD THINKING:

Do you expect to be able to complete it? NaNo I can complete for suresies, I can write 50k in a day, but to live up to my own expectations and finish the story itself? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHH
Do you intend to complete it? No I aim to fail, duh.
Would you ever try to publish it? oH WOULD I?! *crickets chirping*
What do you expect to get out this month of frantic writing? to have explored a new genre, write a more personal thing I can be proud of, learn new things, get some XP, level up, have another story under my belt that I’m satisfied with. ‘scool.

@perringcentral tagged me in this OC ask meme thingy \o/ ♥♥ Thank you!

To prepare for NaNo this will be about the four protagonists of Lucid in this order: Jay / Drew / Gemma / Griffin

1. List five basic facts about your OC.

  • Jay has a long-ass name she hates so she just calls herself “J” / Drew’s agender/asexual/biromantic and chose their own name because they didn’t like the one their parents gave them / Gemma was born without her right leg from knee down / Griffin is in a long-term relationship with Gemma
  • Jay and her family moved to a town called Jordan when she was little and for a while she thought it meant she would have to change her name to Jordan / Drew’s allergic to dogs / Gemma’s a human rights activist / Griffin loves his fucking wreck of a car more than his own life, probably
  • Jay has a huge mass of darkness following her wherever she goes. It’s not doing anything but it’s there. Jay can never glance at it but she knows it’s there / Drew’s grandma has a room full of succulents and Drew sometimes steals them to give to their friends when they’re sad / Gemma is a fashion icon and she does it all on a budget / Griffin has two younger siblings, Ethan and AJ who he’s raising alone after their dad left them
  • Jay’s as bi as they come / Drew can pick locks / Gemma is boxing as a hobby but she’s as good as a professional of her age / Griffin is a pile of muscles but probably couldn’t hurt a fly if someone paid him for it
  • Jay has a younger sister Chelsea that doesn’t live with them and she’s deeply, deeply jealous of her because she wanted to be the first one to move out / Drew  Gemma’s best friends are a community of squatters she’s trying to help out whenever she can / Griffin
EDIT: looks like I didn’t finish this last one but I DID tumblr’s just been messing with me about this post which is why it took me so long to do and now I can’t remember what I wrote for Drew and Griffin here and I’m too lazy to figure out now x)

2. If your OC could have any superpower, which would it be and why?

Jay would want to heal people with her touch because she would help a lot of people and probably still somehow become rich without charging people for it / Drew’d say their superpower is putting up with “all this bullshit” *vague hand gestures* / Gemma would just be Wonder Woman because she’s a goddess / Griffin would want to read minds

3. Post a picture or gif that describes your OC.

4. Summarize your WIP in 10 words or less.

Depressed girl makes some weeeeeeeiiiird friends.

5. Do you have any villains in your story?

Ehh technically I guess I do, it’s this huge demon creature that tries to kill Jay so I guess that qualifies as a villain but I’d call it an antagonist rather. I guess Drew’s dad is a villain. Yeah, Drew’s dad. Fuck that guy.

6.  What’s easier for you to write, dialogue or description?

Neither because I’m bad but I enjoy writing dialogues more.

7. Do you have a favorite writing-related quote?

“Please… I’m tired.” - me.

8. If you could assign your story one song, what would it be?

Secret For the Mad by dodie, I guess but I have a whole playlist of awesome songs that fit the story.

9.  Where do you get inspiration from?

From every piece of media I consume, from moods certain songs put me in, literally fractions of sentences, just anything, really.

10.  Do you tend to underwrite or overwrite in a first draft?

It depends whether I’m rushing or not. If I’m trying to hit a wordcount goal for NaNo I’ll underwrite if I’m having a good time and things are rolling well I’ll overwrite. Both of those ruin my story and I’ll never touch it again :3
