h/t to FMV Story, Jay Tholen, and Devi Ever for this video an issue of LAUNCH, a CD-ROM multimedia magazine. This is a phenomenal thing. The CGI city interface with virtual billboards, interviews with Shaq and Bill Murray, a Hanson music video…
Multimedia magazines like this fascinate me because of the direction they expected all media to move in. The idea of an interactive video-based media magazine in the style of something like Spin or Rolling Stone isn’t too far off from what we have now, and it matches up with what other companies like Voyager predicted about the future of print media. This take, though, is so focused on creating a physical place rather than just being a page. You watch Bill Murray on a screen at a theater from an awkward angle, then you go up to the stage to talk to Ray Liotta. You meet Shaq on the street.
The focus on physical location has only now started to creep back with virtual/augmented/mixed reality tech. It’s so interesting (and ridiculous, let’s be honest) to see how it was approached 20+ years ago.
Hello! I’m an anti-terf here to warn you all that TERFs are planning to make a TERF magazine, most specifcally directed at young, impressionable girls. This is not only concerning, this is possibly endangering to trans people by giving TERFs a platform to spread their dangerous ideology.
And if you think I’m kidding:
So basically, we need to get this site taken down.
In a new survey from LGBTQ advocacy organization GLAAD, conducted by Harris Poll, those open minds are reflected in the numbers: 20% of millennials say they are something other that strictly straight and cisgender, compared to 7% of boomers.
The media, specifically news coverage, shows us and keeps us informed on what is happening in the world. There are many types of news: newspapers, magazines, TV channels… but at what point does news coverage actually become entertainment? And how do news channels MARKET their news for the consumer? It’s time to re-think what we’ve always seen.
