yes, i think the zoo logic works as a metaphor for homeworld. steven is kind of the “rose” of the episode - the first one to question “but what if i don’t want to listen to the voices?”.

of course, nobody gets him. the voices provide for us! they do everything to make us happy, as long as we listen! you should want to listen to the voices!

but that doesn’t work when what you want isn’t what the voices want. the voices are trying, yes, but people are not the same. not every gem wants to fulfill their purpose, unlike what the diamonds might think.

and that’s good! that ties into a huge theme of the whole show: safety and consistency vs change and freedom.

having one, defined purpose can be reassuring for some - as long as you do that, you’re gonna be safe. nothing will ever change, others will provide for you and you’ll always know what you’re supposed to do. nothing will ever hurt or be scary. everything is safe and predictable.

others don’t want that. they want to take risks and see what else life has to offer. abandoning your “purpose” means cutting ties with that safety net, and in the crystal gems’ case, you might even have to fight for freedom.

this will scare the old society - what if others follow suit, and the whole system falls apart because nobody will follow orders or do their job?

suddenly, you have a gem war on your hands.

One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.

Top 10 fanfic title and summaries?

Sacchariwrites -  top 10 most popular in universe viktuuri fanfics? lol

Ok so for these are the top 15 (I couldn’t stick to top 10, I had too many ideas!) most popular Viktuuri fanfics of the Rivals universe AO3. As a disclaimer they are not based on any existing Viktuuri fanfic irl and they are not all fics and tropes I would necessarily read or write (I don’t like RPF myself), they are just the kind of fic that I imagine would be most popular in the Rivals universe considering what is publicly known of Viktor and Yuuri’s story and how they are each viewed by the public in general and their fans, plus the kind of fics that tend to be popular in most fandoms.

I also got way too into this and started mentally writing out the whole fic for some of them but I had to restrain myself and just stick to summaries!

Summary:

Sweat-slicked skin gleamed under the lights, two bodies moving as one as gasps of pleasure filled the quiet room. Katsuki had his head thrown back, eyes glazed as he rode out the sensation, thighs clamped tight around the warm body beneath him and hands fisted into silver hair…

“Cut.” Came the harsh voice of the director as the studio lights snapped back on, flooding the scene with a glaring brightness. “Take five everyone.”

“And you two.” he turned to the two actors who were both blinking in the sudden light and wiping the fake sweat from where it was lying stickily across their skin. “You need to get it together soon or this whole movie is going to be a disaster. You’re supposed to be in love for Christ’s sake! Katsuki, you look like you’re counting down the minutes until you can finish this scene and go and get lunch and Nikiforov, you’re just looking bored. You’re supposed to be actors! I don’t care how much you hate each other, you better act like you don’t or you’re both getting fired.”

Katsuki glared down at Nikiforov who was still lying beneath him, looking annoyed.

“You better step up your game.” Nikiforov drawled, looking disparagingly up at the man still straddling him. “I have a reputation to uphold and I’m not going to lose it to a bad movie because of one amateur, one-hit-wonder actor who can’t do his job properly.”

“Maybe it would be easier to do my job if you weren’t such an arrogant ass who can’t admit to his own mistakes.” Katsuki shot back, glare intensifying. “And stop acting like you’re such a big deal. You might be famous but you’re not that impressive.”

“I don’t know, I’ve been reliably informed by a lot of people that I’m very impressive.”

Nikiforov flicked his eyes to where their bodies were joined, only the smallest pieces of fabric separating them, eyebrow raised suggestively. Katsuki snorted in disgust, then rolled his hips in an unexpected movement that made a certain part of Nikiforov perk up in unintentional interest.

“I’ve seen better.”

“You know, I like my men like I like my coffee.” Nikiforov said, leaning closer across the counter and trying out his best, award winning smile. The cute barista - whose nametag was always suspiciously absent whenever Nikiforov was in the shop and whose name he still couldn’t charm out of him, although not from lack of trying - merely glared in response and continued to make his order without replying.

“Dark, strong and a little bitter.” Nikiforov added with a flirtatious wink, making a point of looking at the man’s feathery dark hair and the lean muscles that stood out in his arms, accentuated by short sleeves of the uniform he was wearing.

“That’s funny. I like you just like I like my coffee too.” The barista’s glare changed in an instant to a coy smirk and Nikiforov’s heart leapt a little in his chest at the sight. It had been weeks since he had first spotted the man at his favourite coffee shop and he had been trying to charm him from the moment their eyes first met. Unsuccessfully so far but he knew it couldn’t be long now.

“And how is that?” Nikiforov replied, layering his tone with as much suggestiveness as he could muster.

“I don’t like coffee.”

The barista turned away to serve the next customer with a look of triumph and Nikiforov could feel his face fall. Oh well, there was always next time. After all, he didn’t give up easily and he always loved a challenge.

Angered by the arrogance of the other God, the God of Death kidnaped the God of Spring for his mockery, locking him away in the underworld and plunging the world above into an eternal winter. But hatred slowly began to change into something new and the two Gods came to realise they might not be as different as they once seemed. But both were needed to keep the balance in the world, one above and one below, and as the long winter raged on even love was called into question. Because can anyone truly be in love if they are also not free?

There are two paths you may take once you realize that life contains no intrinsic meaning or purpose. When you realize that we live in a dark, cruel, uncaring universe. You can either fall to despair and depression and give up on everything. Or, you can just give flip the world the bird and decide to be kind, to be loving, and to decide that if nothing really matters than you may as well enjoy your time here. But that’s the beauty of it all, in the end it doesn’t matter which you pick.

anonymous asked:

Hi, what exactly is Stargate (like, what is the plot, how many seasons, that kind of thing)? I've seen it mentioned in combination with Leverage in some of your posts, and I've sort of picked up some of the character names from being on the internet, but I'm still not sure what it actually is. Thanks!!

What a delightful question that I’m going to have a ridiculous amount of fun answering, probably using too many gifs.

First, the bare bones facts: Stargate is a franchise that began with the 1994 movie Stargate, which was then developed into the TV show Stargate: SG-1 which began in 1997 and picked up about a year after the movie ended. SG-1 had 10 seasons and 2 made-for-TV movies. There are also 2 spinoffs, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate: Universe. Atlantis has 5 seasons, and its first season coincides with season 8 of SG-1, with both beginning in 2004, with some fun but not strictly essential crossover between the two. Universe has 2 seasons and began in 2009, after both SG-1 and Atlantis had ended. I mostly blog about SG-1, but I enjoy all three shows and will at least briefly explain Atlantis and Universe in the course of this post, FOR FUNSIES.

The basic premise of the whole thing is that there are these devices (built by aliens, OF COURSE) called Stargates, which create wormholes that allow for basically instantaneous travel between planets all throughout the Milky Way (and other galaxies as well, it turns out, but that’s later).

The movie involves the US Air Force, with the help of the BEST FICTIONAL ARCHAEOLOGIST IN EXISTENCE FIGHT ME, figuring out how to work the Stargate, using it to travel to another planet, and helping the locals overthrow the evil parasitic alien who was posing as the Egyptian god Ra in order to enslave them.

SG-1 starts with Earth humans learning that “Ra” actually belonged to an entire race of evil parasitic aliens who used the personas of various gods to enslave humans throughout the galaxy. At which point, NATURALLY, the plucky Earth humans say “fuck that shit” and also “ooh, a whole galaxy to explore, HOLD MY BEER” and start having adventures and liberating the galaxy.

Atlantis is about Earth humans finally discovering the lost city of Atlantis over in another galaxy, and the adventures and struggles they have setting up a colony there. Also, space vampires.

Universe is about a bunch of Earth humans accidentally stranding themselves aboard an alien-built spaceship that is going they don’t know where in order to find the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. It’s much darker and more sort of psychological than the other two shows. Also more diverse. I like it a lot, but for different reasons than I like SG-1 and Atlantis.

SG-1 owns my heart, because it’s the show that helped me fall in love with sci-fi. Also, it has Dr. Daniel Jackson. It wrestles with what it means to be human and ethics and all kinds of really good shit. It’s not perfect, and the early seasons especially have some pretty major issues with sexism and white savior complexes in certain episodes, but overall I personally find it more than worth it, and the main reason is the characters, who you now get to hear me yell about my love for.

cosmic witchcraft 101: tips for beginners

It’s been a while since I was an astronomy TA, so I’ve devoted a lot of time to getting familiar with the cosmos during this first month or so of practicing cosmic witchcraft. These are a few of the most important things I’ve done to grow my craft:

  • Stargaze. Looking at pictures of the galaxy and solar system is nice, but there’s nothing like using your own eyes to gaze into the night sky.
    • You can see quite a bit with a good pair of binoculars and you can find some small telescopes for less than $100, although you don’t really need any magnification to enjoy the beauty of the night sky.
    • Maybe there’s an observatory in your area! Find anywhere you might get a little closer to the sky, even if it’s just an open field out of town away from light pollution.
    • For city witches, the roofs of parking garages can be great spots to look at the planets and brightest constellations.
  • Celebrate stellar events. Meteor showers, eclipses, equinoxes, solstices, there are plenty of stellar events every year and many of them already correspond with traditional pagan/Wiccan holidays! Celebrate by stargazing, watching a sci-fi movie, or performing a magickal ritual.
  • Get in tune with the moon, sun, and the planets. What phase is the moon in today? When will Jupiter set? When will Saturn rise? Astrologers utilize the motions of the planets to show us how they affect our day to day life - and even if you don’t ascribe to astrology, knowing where the planets and stellar bodies will be throughout the day will help you plan your practice and get in tune with the universe.
  • Research:
    • Astronomy. Our eyes are the only tools we have to connect with the cosmos using our own five senses (actually, there are some beautiful recordings of what space sounds like), so learning more about the universe can help us connect with the sky can help deepen our relationship with it. Try to learn something new about the cosmos every day. The more you understand the universe, the more equipped you’ll be to handle its power and energy.
    • Astrology. If you’re interested, see what astrology charts have to say about your personality and abilities. Not everyone believes in astrology, which is totally valid, but I think it’s interesting to know where the planets/sun/moon were on the day you were born. Take everything you read with a grain of salt and find out what the relationships between the planets mean for yourself. Maybe you’ll find a certain planet/constellation does have an effect on you or your life, it’s just not the one your horoscope says.
    • Astro-magic. There are a few books about astro-magic and plenty of mythology to study. You might find something another witch has to say resonates with you, or perhaps you’ll be inspired to follow your own path. Experiment! Try using certain herbs and oils for different spells. Did they work? Do you think something else would work better?
  • Get in tune with the ocean. The sun and the moon have a powerful effect on Earth’s tides. How might these influences affect your use of liquids in your practice?
  • Develop a personal relationship with the stars. The stars looked different on the day everyone was born, and the sky looks different in every city in the world. Research is important, but this is your relationship with the sky. I think the most beautiful thing about cosmic witchcraft is that even though every witch’s practice may look different, we’re all looking at the same sky.

Carry On Epilogue

“I was eleven years old, and I’d lost my mother, and my soul, and the Crucible gave me you.”
“It made us roommates,” he says.
I shake my head. “We were always more.”
“We were enemies.”
“You were the centre of my universe,” I say. “Everything else spun around you.”
“Because of what I was, Baz. Because of my magic.”
“No.” I’m nearly as frustrated as he is. “Yes. I mean, Crowley, Snow—yes, that was part of it. Looking at you was like looking directly into the sun.”
“I’ll never be that again.”
“No. And thank magic.” I sigh forcefully. “The way you were before … Simon Snow, there wasn’t a day when I believed we’d both live through it.”
“Through what?”
“Life. You were the sun, and I was crashing into you. I’d wake up every morning and think, ‘This will end in flames.’”

Also, you live on one planet next to one star among a galaxy filled with upwards of 300,000,000,000 stars, in a universe with 300,000,000,000 galaxies, each galaxy in turn filled with hundreds of millions to hundreds of billions of stars. You share fifty percent of your DNA with a banana. You are more closely related to chimpanzees than mice are to rats. You are directly related to every single living organism on this planet. You are, in fact, related to every non-living entity as well (including the device you’re using to read this) because all of our elements were forged together inside the hearts of dying stars. Everything you see in the universe has evolved from a point of infinite mass and density, to quark-gluon plasma, to hydrogen atoms, to complex elements, to you! But all of that stuff we can interact with only makes up 5% of the matter in the universe. The rest is dark matter and dark energy, which we can’t see, hear, touch, smell, or taste. You wouldn’t be here today if you didn’t have an unbroken lineage of survival tracing back to the beginning of life on this planet. That means not a single one of your direct ancestors, stretching back over three thousand million years, has ever died before successfully reproducing—this occurring on a planet where over 99% of all species that have existed are currently extinct. Survival is the exception, extinction the rule. Yet here you are. You are also constantly replacing the cells in your body, so much so that in 7-10 years not a single cell in your body will be the same as today. You are, down to every last atom, a different person than you were when you were born. Yet your brain still manages to be ‘you’, day after day, year after year. All the solid material around you is not only 99.9999999999999999% empty space on the quantum level, it’s also in a constant state of dynamic agitation. All of your atoms are dancing, jiggling waves and particles, existing not as individual entities, but only as probabilities. Put enough of them together, though, and we get the world as we know it.

What's your opinion on the theory that Dipper is treated unfairly throughout GF? For example, Dipper sacrifices a lot for Mabel, while she only seems to sacrifice her sock-puppet show for him. There are also many suggestions in the show that some episodes overlap, like that from July 11-15, Sock Opera, Blendin's Game and Into the Bunker overlap. Which means D was under a LOT of pressure that week and he sacrificed a LOT for his sister. But she doesn't thank him for that. What are your thoughts?

See, maybe it’s the big sister in me, because I’ve never understood this particular complaint. The fact is, Dipper loves Mabel so much that her happiness is his own; his actions of sacrifice on her behalf are freely chosen. That’s why Bill’s behavior in “Sock Opera” is so insidious; he builds on Dipper’s momentary frustration with Mabel (why won’t she help me?!?!) by bringing up the various ways he’s helped her in the past, implying that she hasn’t done much to return the favor. He seeks to engender resentment where there was none, where Dipper was previously unwilling to give him so much as a stitch of Mabel’s puppet show; hey, she worked hard on those.

The key assertion I have to address here is that “Dipper sacrifices a lot for Mabel, while she only seems to sacrifice her sock-puppet show for him.” I imagine that viewers come to the conclusion that Dipper has the losing end because, when they compare Dipper’s problems to Mabel’s, they see Dipper’s as more serious. Dipper has a crush he can’t shake (relatable), Mabel is gaga over a pig she just saw at the fair (less relatable); Dipper is pursuing the latest lead in his search for the Author (important), Mabel is rigging up an elaborate puppet show to impress the Boy of the Week (unimportant). Yet the show is always keenly aware that Mabel’s problems, as trivial as they may seem to us, are as important to her as Dipper’s are to him. Bill highlights this when he says, “Who would sacrifice everything they’d worked for just for their dumb sibling?”, causing Mabel to respond, “Dipper would.” Dipper’s “everything” is his investigation of Gravity Falls and Mabel’s “everything” is her puppet show, but each of their projects is everything. Coming from Mabel, the sacrifice of the sock puppet show–and, by extension, of a shot at the “epic summer romance” she’s been seeking as ardently as Dipper has been seeking the answers to his questions–is a very real loss, one she’s willing to accept because Dipper would do and has done as much for her.

Nor is Mabel’s puppet show the only casualty of her greater love for her brother; the loss of her dream world is no mean thing. Mabeland might not be to everyone’s taste (I would personally have thinned out the crowd and lowered the 80s club music a notch), but it’s Mabel’s ideal universe; it’s a world where everything is as she wants it, where she’s never bored or lonely, where every boy loves her, where the high court judge is a kitten. With the threat of change weighing on her and the most important relationship of her life under siege, the prison bubble presents Mabel with an irresistible retreat. Bill, who has banked on human greed in the past to great success, believes that the trap is inescapable, that no one handed all their heart’s desires on a plate will be capable of leaving (just as Mabel is taken in by her desperation to stop time, Dipper wavers when presented with the possibility of growing up on the spot). But without Dipper, all of it is hollow; she prefers in the end to leave her safe place and to follow him into an uncertain world.

For much of the show, Dipper is the more responsible one within the context of their relationship. Regardless of actual birth order, Mabel is the baby; sometimes the baby gets in a habit of relying on charm to carry her through, taking it for granted that her older siblings will always step up to the plate on her behalf, because she’s just that cute (looking at you, youngest sibling in my own family). But if Mabel’s occasional thoughtlessness with regard to Dipper is a character flaw, it’s worth measuring against the depth of her concern for the world at large, a quality that Dipper himself, who tends to value his select group, could stand to learn from. Dipper’s only real issue with the destruction of Northwest Manor and all of its visitors is that Mabel happens to be among them; Mabel is the first to see the potential for redemption in Pacifica, even though Dipper is the one who becomes close to her.

But Mabel loves Dipper more than anyone, and she is grateful to him for everything he does for her and shows it. She apologizes to him at the end of “Sock Opera” for letting a transient enthusiasm skew her priorities: “I spent all week obsessing over a dumb guy. But the dumb guy I should have cared about was you.” After escaping the prison bubble, she makes it clear to him that he can stay with Ford if he wants to–her noblest moment in the series, because Dipper is her entire world, infinitely more to her than crushes and pet pigs and magical trees that grow stuffed animals. He stays with her, not out of guilty obligation, but because he wants to be with her–because she’s his best friend, because growing up without her would be unthinkable. He’s a fair-minded guy, not one to take the fall without good reason–when he operates against her in “The Time-Traveler’s Pig,” he does so on the assumption that her pig is an enthusiasm of the moment and that his love for Wendy is permanent. When he realizes that losing Waddles will truly hurt her, he doesn’t hesitate. “I could never break your heart, Mabel.”

But look at how she thanks him. She knows this wasn’t easy for him and she’s ready to show him how much it means to her. She tackles him in sheer strength of feeling. She lifts him right off his feet.

Treated unfairly? Dipper gets back everything he gives away with interest. Dipper’s happiness is his sister’s happiness and he always gets it because he is her happiness. Dipper is a lucky kid.

the first astrology book i ever read said that many psychiatrists were sagittarius. she was not an astrologer, but an observer. i thought this was odd, but over the years i have worked with an over representation of sagittarian psychiatrists. the mind generates tremendous curiosity. i do wonder if the sagittarius person does this out of a benefic altruism or more to satisfy their own inquisitiveness. especially something like psychosis, ‘how does a mind twist that way’. their intelligence assists this, and the sign of sagittarius relates to higher education so university study does wonders for their consciousness. i also think its because they look for a meaning of life in the mind. jupiter enlarges everything, so a sagittarius with a big heart can make the best doctor of the mind.

  • To Tim: What’s the difference between writing for  the comics vs the show?
    • The comics happen so fast, write the adventure and 3 months later it comes out, and there’s no production limitation with comics, in terms of how much Voltron can be in or how many giant monsters they can plug
  • Every paladin has bonded more with their lions - where can they go from now?
    • Tim: “Bonds can become closer” plenty more to unlock emotionally and intellectually, we’ll see who steps up
    • Bex: bond with lion like bond with people - it can deepen and develop over life, will keep going and evolving
    • As seen with Zarkon, a bond with a lion can be broken, and a bond can be damaged if you betray the lion
    • Tyler: Just cause you form a relationship doesn’t mean they show you everything right away - nuances to the relationship
  • What was fun to discover with characters
    • Bex really likes 1st ep. Season one Pidge is all family, then she has realization that these have become her people; catapulted into community growth instead of just self growth
    • Tyler enjoyed going to new depths, not just regular scenario like school, higher stakes cause defending universe. Lots of characters (esp Hunk) were a bit of a mess in the beginning and then became more sure-footed, all paladins got that in season 2 to an extent
    • Ty’s fave character to watch was Keith, his internal struggle and the test with the BoM. Almost like watching a superhero origin story - want to see the person becoming the hero
    • “we have 5 superheroes and they’re always progressing”
  • Fave scenes:
    • Ty: the space caterpillars, when they came out with theglowing  eyes
    • Image of Pidge smuggling some onto castle “she must’ve” “Pidge is a hoarder so-” “castle is big”
    • Ty: another awesome moment was getting farted out of the weblum, found it hilarious
    • Tim: fun how Hunk and Coran went to get the crystal and mentioned the weblum - foreshadowing, things pay off
    • Bex: when Coran thinks he’s gonna fly the lion. Tim: it’s a suit he made, he didn’t steal Alfor’s
  • Pidge and Hunk seem much more the ambassadors of the team - good at getting aliens to trust them
    • Ty: Hunk can trust himself in a situation, his softer side really services him like on the mermaid planet. He’s approachable and likeable and personalbe, it’s a skillset and he’s learning to embrace it
    • Tim: Hunk is able to see multiple sides of a situation, never forgets how crazy this situation they’re in is, he’ able to put himself in other’s shoes
    • Bex: Pidge communicates with technology, needs an extra step to make that connection with people. So when she meets the Olkari it’s like “these are people I can actually communicate with
My Top 5 Root Moments

Shoot Week Day 1 - Favourite Root Moments

(All gifs are mine. They took forever and they’re Not Good, and I’ve developed such a massive appreciation for everyone who spends the time making these things.)

1. Root’s view of the universe (317)

This scene perfectly encapsulates Root’s misanthropy. The idea that she presents here is Camus’ Absurdism, which describes the conflict between the universe’s inherent meaninglessness and our need to find a purpose. Camus argued that the only true way to resolve this conflict is by embracing the Absurd – acknowledging the chaos of the universe while defiantly searching for meaning anyway. This episode, which is the springboard to Root’s redemption arc, concludes with Root doing just that. The Machine gives Root’s life meaning, but She encourages Root to make her own choices. Root also admits that she cares about Shaw, Finch and even “the helper monkey.”

2. Shapes and symphonies (510)

Can you believe that Root discussed philosophy and metaphysics and made a joke about Shaw’s glorious ass all during a lethal shootout? Legends only.

This entire speech was great, but I particularly like the lines in the gif above. It’s such a contrast to Root’s previous thoughts about the universe being “infinite and chaotic and cold.” Instead, she indicates that we forge our paths in the universe – which, as I discussed earlier, sounds very similar to the idea of “embracing the Absurd.”

I also appreciate how meta this line is. Root and Shaw, aren’t real, but they still mean everything to me, both individually and as a couple. And even though they are no longer on our TV screens now that POI has ended, we can still keep them alive in our imaginations through our fics, art, gifs and so on.

3. Root’s newfound sense of belonging (510)

Root spent the majority of her life alone, shunning humanity. This moment in which she admits to Shaw that she’s finally found a family and a sense of belonging was hard-fought, which makes it all the more gratifying. She had to earn Team Machine’s trust. She risked her life for them repeatedly and even endured brutal torture. But as she said, she wouldn’t change any of it.

4. Root and the truth (301)

I loved Root from the moment that she pulled a gun on Finch in 123, but this is the scene where she became my favourite character of all time. This monologue is incredibly chilling and really conveys Root’s power. Her voice shakes from the thorazine that she’s being forced to take and from rage (at her confinement and at this psychiatrist, who easily fits her definition of bad code). It’s a tremendous performance by Amy Acker.

5. “Maybe someday” (411)

In Prophets (405), Root says that a good end would be a privilege for her. Here, she gets what she would probably feel is a “good end”.  As Root knows that she is about to die saving the world, all she wants is confirmation that there could be something between her and Shaw someday. The way her face lights up at the mere possibility of them having a future together absolutely breaks my heart.

The Signs as Writers
  • ♈️ Aries: They’ve been writing since they were really young. They are always working on a project, or attempting some crazy challenge. They don’t shy away from trying out new genres or writing styles. Once they want to do something, there’s no way to stop them.
  • ♉️ Taurus: They may appear to have a controlled exterior, but all of that changes the instant you ask them about their characters. They write the most lovable & sweet characters, and they also happen to be their own #1 biggest fan— so beware talking smack about their babies.
  • ♊️ Gemini: They’re always juggling several projects at the same time. They write fiction and enjoy it, but they do much more. They can be spotted writing the comic-book version of one of their previous works, or typing up a movie script. Prolific doesn’t even begin to describe them.
  • ♋️ Cancer: Their storytelling is spontaneous, almost volatile, and that is what makes their books so fun to read. There’s no telling where their stories will go or what will happen next. For them, what matters most is not the journey— but the adventure!
  • ♌️ Leo: They know their characters better than anyone else. Sometimes they may spend more time writing backstories (and doing world-building) than actually writing the book, but at the end it’s all worth it. That’s why their characters feel like real people.
  • ♍️ Virgo: Their two best friends are subtlety and foreshadowing. They love leaving clues in the background, hints of what will be happening later in the story. They live for astute readers and, if you pay attention, you will realize there is more going on than you could’ve ever expected.
  • ♎️ Libra: Some writers are afraid of having multiple points of view, not them. They have tons of POVs, and they all get their chance under the spotlight. Sometimes their antagonists get the most character development, and that’s why they don’t feel like “villains.”
  • ♏️ Scorpio: They use everything in their power to strike the reader right in the *feels*. They’re the masters of cliffhangers and plot-twists. It's not about playing dirty, it’s about getting a reaction out of you. Character deaths should be expected, though they will still surprise you every damn time.
  • ♐️ Sagittarius: They don’t simply just *write* a book, they immerse themselves in the process. They’re dedicated researchers, and are known to go as far as changing their entire surroundings to match the ‘feel’ of the story they’re currently working on.
  • ♑️ Capricorn: They don’t write one-shots. Everything (and yes they do mean *everything*) they write is part of a series or their overarching mega-macro-universe. Expect to see cameos, familiar faces, and recurring themes across all their books!
  • ♒️ Aquarius: With them, no idea is too strange or far-fetched. They can take anything and spin it into a story. Mixing genres, and making new ones along the way, is all par for the course. Best of all— is that their crazy story ideas always work.
  • ♓️ Pisces: Everything they write is magical. They can make the most mundane story feel bigger-than-life and, when it comes to creating breath-taking worlds & settings, there’s simply no better. Be careful, though, because if given the chance they *will* make you believe that magic is real.

In a recent thread, the question of whether tabletop gaming systems that “focus more on story” are friendlier to beginners. I’m going to spin off a separate post because - as always - I have Opinions on that.

My first reaction is that I don’t think the question makes sense. All tabletop RPGs “focus on story” - they just do it in different ways, because the word “story” can mean more than one thing.

There’s “story” as in “a planned narrative with scenes and acts and character arcs and Something To Say about life, the universe and everything”.

However, there’s also “story” as in “a retrospectively constructed explanatory narrative for a bunch of stuff that happened”.

Or, in plain English, there’s the kind of story where you decide what kind of story you want to tell, then invent the specific people and events that will allow you to tell it; and there’s the kind of story where you start with the people and events already defined for you, then invent a narrative to organise and explain what the heck just happened.

Even the most “gamified” tabletop systems are story-focused in the sense that they produce stories. Some of the most engaging anecdotes from the tabletop come from the dice deciding to do something bizarre, or from some subtle interaction between various layers of the rules kicking out an unexpected result, and rather than fudging or ignoring it, the players at the table ran with it and made a story where that was the only thing that could have happened.

Now, some systems may produce stories badly - i.e., the events they generate are too predictable, too repetitive, or too frustratingly paced to easily make into good stories, or they demand too much work from the players for the value of their output - but that’s a flaw of individual implementations. The idea that complex or rules-heavy systems are bad at story focus in principle is nonsense.

Of course, that’s a tangent, because that’s not what the question really means.

To the extent that “not being story focused” is erroneously equated with “having many or complex rules” - there’s that old role-playing versus roll-playing fallacy again - what it really means is “are systems that demand less engagement with the rules categorically friendlier to beginners?”.

I wouldn’t agree that they are.

To pose a simple example, if we assume for the sake of argument that less mechanical engagement = more beginner friendly, then freeform RP, which demands no mechanical engagement whatsoever, must obviously be the most beginner-friendly game of all - yet it’s my experience that freeform RP in a group setting can be extremely challenging for beginners, often to the extent that they’re unable to participate at all, in spite of their best efforts.

Detractors of rules-heavy games will often characterise game rules as serving to limit player creativity, but any student of improvisational storytelling can tell you that limitations are good for creativity, at least up to a point. Tell a person they can do anything and they’ll flounder - but give them a couple of specific options to pick from and off they go. “Rules impose creative restrictions” is merely the evil twin of “rules provide creative frameworks”.

Naturally there’s a balance to be struck; hand someone a two hundred page rulebook as their first introduction to the tabletop roleplaying hobby and more often than not you’ll just scare them off - and rightly so. I mean, what were you thinking? But it’s not as simple as less rules = more beginner-friendly; a game with too little structure can be just as intimidating to newcomers as a game with too much.

Where that line lies is going to vary from person to person; I’ve touched on this in the past, but in a nutshell, there’s no such thing as a body of rules that’s naturally easy to understand. For all that folks like to hold it forth as a virtue of their favourite games, “intuitiveness” is a phantom - it’s nothing more than the intersection of textual clarity and similarity to stuff you’re already familiar with. That’s something that trips a lot of folks up here: thinking that a particular game should easy for newcomers to master because it’s easy for me.

So I suppose the TL/DR version boils down to this:

  • There’s no such thing as tabletop gaming system that isn’t story-focused; there are merely those that yield boring stories, or that demand more work than you feel is reasonable to produce them
  • When it comes to beginner-friendliness, too little rules engagement can be just as bad as too much
  • Where the tipping point between those two failure states is going to be varies from person to person, and finding it depends on understanding both your target audience and your own preconceptions
