"Can'tcha hear my heartbeat keeping perfect time?" (Selijah)

Sarah balanced the laundry basket on her hip as she moved up the stairs. She’d fold the clothes in her bedroom before bringing them into Grace’s room. She should be awake by then.

But Sarah was surprised to see the door open to the nursery as she walked down the hall. When she came to the door, she smiled and leaned against the frame.

Inside, Elijah held Grace perfectly in his arms as he danced around the room with her.

“Don’t you need music?” she laughed softly.

Elijah wasn’t startled by her voice, nor did he stop his little dance. He only smiled. “Can’tcha hear my heartbeat keeping perfect time?”

❂ = wiping blood off their face (SElijah)

The night had been intense. The restaurant Sarah and Elijah had gone to for dinner had been crowded, so they had been seated in the bar area, which both were fine with. It was while Elijah had gone to the bathroom that Sarah had been approached by a man who had greeted her courteously enough and then insisted on buying her a drink. Sarah politely declined, but the man kept at it, then began commenting on how beautiful Sarah was.

That was when his hand brushed over her breast, then grinned, showing that it was no accident.

That was also when Elijah returned.

Now, hours later, Elijah sat on a kitchen chair while Sarah carefully cleaned dried blood off from under his nose and around his split lip.

“That was a foolish thing you did,” Sarah said sternly.

Elijah didn’t say anything, instead only looking up at her solemnly, his mixed colored eyes looking wide and guilty.

Sarah sighed and lowered the cloth in her hand. Then she bowed her head and kissed the top of his hair.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

❛ Tell me, please. There’s nothing we can’t fix. ❜ (SElijah)

Sarah raised her tear stained face and gave a shuddery breath, trying to compose herself. “I … I …” She bit her lip as a fresh round of tears welled in her blue eyes. “I’m out of peanut butter.”

She shook her head as she began to weep. “I wanted it so bad that I got out of bed when I wasn’t supposed to and it wasn’t even down here.” She covered her face with her hands. “And I can’t go out and buy more.” She was inconsolable.

'damn i can’t do any of those things’ (SLandon)

Grace was screaming her tiny head off and Landon looked like he was holding a live bomb, only more horrified. His eyes moved to Sarah as she came into the room. “I don’t know what’s wrong.”

Sarah smiled kindly. “It’s all right, handsome. She’s just hungry.” She grabbed her nursing cover and came to collect her little girl.

Landon carefully handed her over, shaking his head. “Damn. I can’t do any of those things.”

“that’s what i love about you.” (SElijah)

Sarah laughed. “Why’s that? Because I focus more on healthy snacks for Grace’s lunch than my personal hygiene?” She really needed to shower, but she’d been thoroughly engrossed in this magazine with all sorts of creative and fun snacks she wanted to try. Even if Grace was only three months old. Never too early to plan, right?

Sarah nodded and handed him the herbal tea. “We’ve all been there, handsome,” she said softly. She stayed quiet for a moment, watching him carefully sip it. She pushed back her long hair and rested her arms on her knees, looking up at the stars from their spot on the steps of her back porch. “You know,” she said gently. “You don’t have anything to prove. It’s awful what happened to your sister, Landon. And you’re allowed to grieve and not have it all together.” She looked over at him. “I promise the world won’t fall apart because you can’t take care of everything with a smile on your face for awhile.”
