Voice actress of popular manga series One Piece’s protagonist Monkey D. Luffy, Tanaka Mayumi (60), donated all seventy-seven current volumes of One Piece to all ten elementary and middle schools in Kumamoto Prefecture’s city of Koushi. At a ceremony held on July 8th, Tanaka personally presented two representative students with the volumes in front of an audience of three-hundred and eleven students and one school principal.

The city will publish its cultural development through the application of studying of anime and manga works. Approximately five years earlier, Tanaka had coached a children’s performance troupe in the very same city; and so with this connection, it was no surprise that along with her most recent visit to spectate the troupe’s performance she would decide upon this presentation.

Tanaka called out for the students to freely “have ‘unexpected dreams’ and shout them out in the same way that Luffy would.” 6th grade student Hayashida Risa (12) stated, “The way Luffy stands up against his enemies no matter how strong they are is cool. Whenever I read One Piece, I want to learn from Luffy’s passionate heart.”
