maynard ave

Me, posing for a photo in what-used-to-be ManilaTown within Seattle’s Chinatown neighborhood. The area around Maynard Ave and King St was a hotbed of Filipino Alaskeros (cannery workers in AK) during the early 1900’s. I would’ve loved to live there during that time. The combination of dancehalls and gambling circles must’ve been very festive for the Filipino Men, after a day of hard labor. I realize the hardships they endured, and the constant racism during that time. It all adds to my utmost respect for the Filipino Men in Seattle during the early 1900’s. They were the toughest of all generations of Fil-Ams. They laid down the foundation for future generations of Pinoys. They were Manongs, they were Heroes. -The Dilapidated Hearts Project
