Public speaking is very few people’s favorite thing. It can be so terrifying to get up in front of a whole class and present your project, so here are a few tips on nailing your next speech and feeling a little less nervous while you’re at it.
i. preparing your speech
Start with a topic that you care about, and be sure that:
It’s not too general that you don’t have enough time to cover it (like ‘the history of the US’ for a five minute speech) or too specific that you will run out of material.
Some people talk faster when they are nervous, some people slow down. Find out which you are and plan accordingly.
Make several drafts, and send them to your teacher if you can.
Create your visual aids (PowerPoint, handouts, etc) before your final draft, so you can make changes as necessary.
Don’t put too much text on your slides, other wise your audience (and maybe you) will get distracted by trying to read them.
Stick to using slides for quick facts, statistics, and pictures.
Don’t use the sound effects options they have for changing slides, it will just be a distraction.
For a speech you’re just giving once, you probably won’t have the timing down enough to use automatic changes.
Don’t put too much information on one slide. Just the point you’re on, and maybe the next, will be enough to fill it if your font is as large as it should be.
Make sure you have your slides saved in at least two places (typically a flash drive and your email) so that if you can’t access one you have a back up.
Think about what questions people might have about your topic, and be prepared to answer them. Also brush up on any opposing views if the exist so that you can address those, both in the speech and in questions.
ii. making your flashcards
Write bigger and clearer than you think you need.
I find it a bit difficult to read when I get nervous, especially when I’m just glancing down quickly. Write in print, and stick to just one or two points per card so that you can write largely.
Don’t write whole sentences, just key words.
If you have too much information you’ll be tempted to read it all off. Instead, just write down a word or two that will remind you of your point if you get off track.
Number your flashcards, and consider putting them on a ring.
That way, if you drop your cards on the way up you won’t start out flustered.
Remember to put when to change the slide so you don’t forget and end up behind, or leaving it on the same slide the whole time.
Color code your cards so that you can see what’s happening at a glance.
I typically use blue for stats/things I need to quote directly, grey for slide changes, and pink for points to emphasize.
All speeches should end with you asking for questions, so be sure to add that into your last card.
Always practice out loud, even if you feel silly.
It’s important to hear and feel yourself saying the speech to get comfortable performing it.
Time yourself practicing your rough draft a few times, so you know if you need to make it longer or shorter.
Practice with your visual aids a few times
Practice it all the way through if you can; if you mess up, brush it off and keep going.
Film yourself practicing, so you can see if there’s anything you’re not noticing that you need to adjust.
Practice everyday, even if it’s just for a few minutes some days.
The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll feel.
iv. getting ready to speak
On the day of your speech, be sure to eat a good breakfast/lunch so you don’t get light headed.
Dress in an outfit that makes you feel confident and isn’t distracting: no busy patterns, large logos, or short hemlines that you would be tugging at the whole time.
Double check that you have everything you need before you leave – cards, slides, and any handouts you may need.
This TED Talk has some great tips on faking confidence. I highly recommend watching it, but if you don’t have the time one of the take aways is that certain poses can trick your brain into feeling confident. She actually suggests going into a bathroom stall and standing in a “Superman” sorta pose for a minute or so. You’ll feel really silly, but strangely it helps.
While you’re in there, adjust your hair/check your teeth so you’re not worried about that when you get up there.
If you get to choose when you speak, think strategically: will going first and getting it out of the way make you feel better? Or would you rather wait and see a few people speak first?
I really don’t suggest waiting until the very last slot, but I like to go second or third to have the best of both worlds.
When you get to class, lay out everything you need and glance over your notes one more time. Then take a deep breath. You’ve got this.
v. the speech
When you get up to speak, take your time laying out everything you need and setting up your slides.
After you’ve gotten the slides on, test the remote to see how sensitive it is. Just flipping to the first slide and back to the intro will help you feel less flustered if it’s more sensitive than you think and jumps around.
Take a deep breath and get started. If you mess up, no will know but you. Just keep going and act confident.
Glance back for just a second when changing slides to make sure you’re on the right one.
Make eye contact! The biggest mistake I see people make is to look down or above everyone’s head. Make eye contact with everyone more or less equally so it doesn’t look like you’re staring people down (but, if there’s someone that’s extra smiley/encouraging don’t be afraid to come back to them when you get nervous).
If you feel yourself starting to get nervous or starting to talk too fast/slow, it’s okay to take a second to take a deep breath and center yourself. Don’t be afraid of a couple seconds of silence if you need them.
If the podium helps you feel less nervous, use it. If moving around helps you loosen up, that works too!
If you get off track, you are likely only one that even noticed that you messed up, so just take a deep breath, take a look at your notes, and get back on track the best you can (”going back to the second point,” or “but before we get to that,”).
If you’ve noticed that something’s wrong that needs to be addressed (like you’re on the wrong slide, or you misspoke and gave an incorrect fact) you can say something simple like “Sorry, I misspoke, it’s actually 1 in 3 Americans, not 1 in 4″ or try to make a joke if the subject lends to it and move onto your next point.
No matter what happens, it’s all good. Try to to panic and say things like “sorry, guys, I’m just so nervous” because that’s basically the only thing that will tip them off that you are.
Above all, just try to relax and remember that you’re doing a good job. No one but you can tell how nervous you are or will know if you mess up.
Whether it’s about why a character would
commit murder or why someone would want a do-over in life, I get a lot of
questions about character motivations. This is a very important question to ask
yourself to develop a believable character because for every action and
decision that is made there is some sort of motivation. You eat because you’re
hungry, you sleep because you’re tired, you plot to take over the country
because the current government killed your sister and framed it on you to further
their political agenda. Or maybe you eat because nobody can turn down the
deliciousness that is mint chocolate ice cream, you sleep because you’ve got a
ridiculous migraine from all the ice cream, and you plot to take over the world because you plan to outlaw eating
mint chocolate chip ice cream to have it all for yourself. No matter what the motive
is the important thing is that the character has one. To help you come up with
one for whatever insanity you’re planning (the scenarios I’ve seen from all of you make me equally proud and baffled) I’ve come up with a few points to
consider to get your thinking gears moving.
Consider how it relates to the
main plot and subplot(s).
Going back to taking over the
country, there are millions of ways this story could unfold. What differentiates
each and what makes it interesting is why the character wants to do this. Martin
Scorsese once said “The king died and then the queen died is a story. The king
died, and then queen died of grief is a plot.” This is the way a character’s
motive works: your story tells the reader what happens but the why and how is
always more interesting. So ask yourself what kind of impact you want this
motive to have on the plot because it is what will drive everything. When a
character doesn’t have a motivation (like a villain who is evil because) there
is no direction and no intrigue in the events as they unfold.
Is it out of fear or desire?
To put it very simply,
character motivation is fueled by either fear or desire (or maybe both). You
could eat because you saw someone else eating cake and now you really crave some
too, or you could eat because you fear dying of hunger. There are always primal
fears and desires like the desire for survival, companionship and happiness and
a fear of death and pain. These are great and can often come up but also try to
personalize them to your character so the reader feels why it is important to them. Once you having something fueling the motivation it becomes much more real and
gives you a better idea of how to use it.
Make it fit with the genre.
Along with personalizing to the
character, it’s good to keep in mind the tropes of the genre (remember tropes
are not the same as clichés). In a romance the reader expects one of the
motivations to be love, in a thriller it’s often about a fight for personal
survival and/or to save someone or something. The reason this is important is
because it would be odd for a character’s main motivation in a story about
saving the country from foreign invasion to be becoming a pianist. Unless, of
course the story is really about a young talent who loses their chance to
travel to a music school because of war, but now the plot has changed, hasn’t
it? There can be multiple motivations, especially when you cross genres like a
YA adventure, or thriller with a romance but just remember that readers who
give your work a try have certain expectations based on the genre so either try
to match or rethink the genre you’re really writing.
External and internal
External motivations are ones
that are imposed on your character by external forces while internal
motivations come from within themselves (personal desires). For example, take a
police officer tasked with finding a kidnapped victim. They have the external
motivation of solving this case because it is their job and failing at it would
be failing their assignment and leaving a life in peril. They could also have
many other personal motivations driving them like having lost their best friend
to trafficking or something completely unrelated, like they are motivated to
make their little kid proud. You can also try to make these motivations specific to differentiate from characters, at least in your own mind so you can weave that into the characters. External motivations can push the character into
the plot but the internal ones can keep them going when things get tough and make readers truly sympathize with them.
Finally, do your homework.
No matter how many tips you
read here or anywhere else, none of it is going to matter if you don’t sit down
and work out your character’s motivations to fit them and your plot. If you need
motivations for something that you might not be familiar with (eg. why someone
would commit a specific crime) or you need more information about the topic…RESEARCH!
Remember, remember, remember that there are no cutting corners when it comes to
writing so take a seat, let your mind explore the possibilities, and get to
Hey, hey! Shy anon here. Would you like to share your Klance headcanons, please?
heuheuhehuehueheu don’t mind if i do
Lance loves Keith’s hair
listen. you do not constantly comment on the feature of someone else unless you are coveting it or jealous of it or love it in some way
lance: god your hair is stupid keith: then why are you running your hands through it right now
in all honesty, Lance loves to play w Keith’s hair???? he will braid it then run his fingers through it til it untangles then braid it again or just play with it and Keith will doze off with his head in Lance’s lap
they get in fights
and it’s normal and it’s okay because, in every way, opposites attract, and Lance is scared of Keith’s impulsiveness and is worried it’s gonna get Keith hurt, and Keith doesn’t understand why Lance keeps putting himself down every time someone tries to compliment him and it’s this cycle where they both eventually start to realize that maybe they have to concede their stubbornness and listen to make this work
usually it ends with one of them kissing the other quiet mid-fight and gripping their cheeks and whispering “I love you, you know that?”
Lance sings them to sleep when they spend the night together in one of their rooms
it starts off as playful, joking, annoy-the-shit-outta-Keith sing-song, until Lance starts to sing one of his favorite songs from back home and he finds he can’t make it a joke anymore because there’s this hole in his heart and it hurts so much that he has to stop because he can’t breathe anymore
Keith just rests his hand over Lance’s heart and whispers soft reassurances until he calms down again
and a little later, when Keith asks Lance to sing again for him, Lance can do it without crying this time, and it becomes their nighttime ritual, Lance humming and singing soft lyrics as they stare up at the dark ceiling that they both know will never feel like home
Keith likes making out
to the point where their lips are numb and they can’t feel their jaws and both of them are panting and kind of pawing at each other’s faces and pushing into one another but they’re really having trouble breathing now, but they still can’t stop
sometimes the two of them will just go hang out inside of Blue because Lance loves his girl and Keith loves watching Lance talk to her and get excited when buttons light up after Lance asks a question, because the way the two of them interact is so sweet, bordering on endearing, and what makes Lance happy makes Keith happy too
whenever Keith and Lance are stargazing out of one of the many floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the castle, Keith will always point out a blue star and say “Look. Just like your eyes.”
those bone-shaking, armor-clacking, rib-crushing hugs after near death battles? yeah. lots of those.
spooning that turns into annoyed kicks because Keith hates getting too hot and “fuck off, Lance, you’re sweaty” and “c’mooooon, you love it” and “oh my god, I will put you on the floor”
Keith is a cat person so when they go to a planet and the aliens who needed help are literal cat-people with toe beans and floofy ears, he’s in near tears the entire time and he’s like “hi sorry, I just-sorry, can I-sorry-can I touch ur toe beans” and the cat-person is like “whom” and Keith is like “PLZ CAN I HOLD UR HAND” and the cat-person is shook bc a Paladin of Voltron wants to Hold Their Hand so of course they say yes and Keith nearly passes out bc he is touchin the toe beans
also, turns out that as much as Keith loves cats, he’s fuckin allergic to them (and he already knew this so rly he’s just a masochist) and starts uncontrollably sneezing for the entirety of the mission, but despite it all, he is still smiling and sniffling and just so Happy that he met real live cat people who let him touch the toe beans
sometimes when Keith gets really upset over something that’s happened or a battle that almost went horribly wrong, Lance will just hook his pinky finger around Keith’s and it’s like this thing that grounds Keith and helps him focus and close his eyes and breathe, because he knows Lance is there and that they’re gonna be okay
Keith never really knows how to vocalize his thanks to Lance for these moments, so he just lets it speak through his actions, like when they’re all heading to bed for the night and Keith stops Lance just to press their foreheads together for a moment before kissing Lance gently on the lips
I’ve made this because a lot of people have been asking for MTL’s for certain liners and TBH they’re all very similar. So I’m making this so that I don’t have to write as much for the MTL’s!
This would be for when both persons (them and their partner) are legal, so maybe not right now but when they’re legal. I’ve also put their birth year too so you get what kind of ranges I think.
Please remember that this is MY opinion - this doesn’t mean that they definitely will or definitely won’t date someone within these ranges or not. Also, either ends of their range would be the most unlikely - I think they’d all rather date someone close to their age, so the lowest and highest age would the lowest/highest they’d go so it’s very unlikely.
Do you fit in with your bias’ age range preference?
“What’s wrong with Scott.” You asked as you cornered Stiles, who was about to rush after the Alpha, who was storming through the school as if
someone had angered him beyond reason.
“Urm, it’s complicated.” He muttered and Lydia glanced over
“You can tell us Stiles, we might be able to help, he isn’t acting
like himself.” She pointed out and Stiles nodded, taking a deep breath as he
gave Scott one last glance.
“I think he might be in… heat?” Stiles muttered and your
mouth dropped open until Lydia put her finger under your chin to close it.
“So, that’s why he threw Liam away from Malia this morning?” She asked and Stiles nodded. “And also, why he’s been avoiding (Y/N) … makes sense
he’d be most drawn to the member of the pack who needs the most protection.”
“Hey!” You huffed and they both gave you a matching look.
“You are the weakest, you’re human.” Stiles pointed out.
“You’re also close with Scott but you’re close with other
male werewolves, Liam, Brett, Derek and Isaac.” Lydia pointed out and Stiles
took another turn.
“So basically, he’s probably finding it really difficult to
be around you because he’s um… like I said possibly in heat.” Stiles muttered.
“That’s stupid, he’s a guy why would he be in heat.” You
“Reproducing would expand the pack faster, allows the Alpha
to mark a mate without actually turning said mate into a werewolf and it’d give
the alpha a chance to have some time with the betas and… strengthen their pack
bond?” Lydia offered and you made a grossed-out noise.
“Rhetorical question Lydia, anyway I’ll just ask Scott what’s
wrong and prove you both wrong.” You hummed.
“I don’t think you should.” Stiles muttered but you’d
already ducked out of the corridor to where Scott had vanished.
“Scott?” You called and followed the low continues growl to
a bathroom tucked away at the end of the corridor. “Scott, why’re you naked!”
You squeaked and grabbed at his jeans, hoping if you handed them to him he’d
get dressed as you tried not to look.
“I was too hot.” He mumbled roughly and moaned when you put
a hand on his forehead.
“Maybe I should ask if I can give you a lift to the hospital…
you can’t exactly ride your bike.” You mumbled, your eyes widening as he slowly
slid your hand down his neck and across his stomach, letting you pull away before he
could go any lower.
he held me, thinks sherlock, looking at john across the pillows in some kind of wonderment. john’s fringe is growing long again. his eyelashes lay blue-violet shadows on his cheeks. he’s been asleep now for the better part of half an hour. is that the word for it? that’s how it felt, i think. like being. protected, even though there’s no danger here. like he was gathering me up with all my pieces, keeping me together.
does he know that’s what he did? held me, i mean. that way.
john snuffles in his sleep, rubbing his cheek along the pillowcase almost in response. he had been fiercely respectful of sherlock’s privacy since moving back in, as though castigating himself at every near-cross of a boundary, and it had made his movements around the flat stilted and unsure, like every time he went to put a foot down, he had to first draw it back and double-check that he was allowed. you’re allowed, sherlock had told him, just that morning. whatever you’re worried about doing or not doing - you’re allowed.
maybe, john had responded, quite easily, as if he’d been expecting sherlock to do it, but that still doesn’t mean i should.
but then, the realisation, passing between them like an electrical current, the closed circuit of knowing flowing between them as visibly as lightning, had stopped them both where they stood. and sherlock had said, you know i want you to, then.
yes, john had said, very, very quietly, i think so. you know why i’m hesitating, too.
sherlock had looked at him for a long minute, not deducing, not deciding. just seeing. yes. you’re afraid.
john had laughed. laughed, actually. aren’t you?
petrified, which was true, but i think you should do it anyway, which was less true, in fact, but still worth saying. sherlock hoped he’d always say the things worth saying. he doubted he would, or that he even could, but it was a good thing to hope for, he thought.
and so john had stepped forward. breathed. slipped one hand around the back of sherlock’s elbow, steadying him. had, so so slowly, so so softly, leaned in and brushed his mouth across sherlock’s. not a kiss - not really. that had come after. it was john, going to put a foot down and drawing back, double-checking that he was allowed. you’re allowed, sherlock had repeated, breathing against his cheek. i - i want you to.
i - i want you to, too, john had said, more like a gasp than anything, like the strength of that admission had to be wrenched forward from somewhere he’d been keeping secret, i want you to be allowed, too.
which had lead them here, to john’s sleepy heartbeat wearing into sherlock’s sheets and john’s hand on the coverlet, fingers curled in easy relaxation, those same fingers that had clutched and smoothed and held, and held, and held, and even though the fingers were there, now, on the coverlet instead of on sherlock’s hips and shoulders and neck and jaw and ribs and thighs and hands, there was the distinct sense of not having been let go.
sherlock, john whispers, not opening his eyes. his fingers turn, reach, find, clasp. sherlock thinks his heart is going to burst right out of his wrist where it beats against john’s palm. you all right?
yes, sherlock whispers back. did you know you held me?
john’s smile, lazy in the dark. sherlock wants to trace it with a fingertip. he thinks, probably, he’d be allowed to do that, if he tried, but it can wait until morning. was that okay?
he shrugs. the covers shift. john’s thumb swipes back and forth across the smooth skin of his arm. i think so. i just. didn’t know if you knew. that that’s what that was, i think.
it was, john confirms. the smile doesn’t fade. he tugs on sherlock’s wrist, gently, encouragingly. come here, and i’ll do it again, if you like.
sherlock inches forward, and john raises an arm to welcome him in until his head settles on john’s chest, with one arm draped over his back. he can hear the steady-slow thump of john’s heart. he can feel the smooth-shallow rise of john’s belly under his hand. i like holding you, sherlock, he says, rumbling and gruff through sleep and the saying of something that is difficult and daring to say, i’d like to keep doing it, if that’s okay.
♡ Summary: It has been nearly a year since you started writing anonymous letters to Jungkook, giving him words of encouragement behind the thin mask of a paper. He never considered you as a possible suspect behind these letters, because you were nothing more than a best friend. And you couldn’t put all the blame on him either, after all, you were too afraid to confess in fear of tarnishing your precious friendship.
I can't believe keith is so emo he writes emo notes to his missing bf and puts them on his wall so he can look at them and feel more emo!!!
the end phrase of both notes are DEFINITELY repeated.
like…. okay. maybe the animators just copy and pasted the text twice onto multiple notes but ….. there are things that have been torn off that wall too. and there are things that just kind of make me think it isn’t and keith has written this out multiple times. it’s just really interesting tbh…..
also a few things worth consideration to build on this whole discussion and it’s all to do with the speech inflection + phrasing of words:
“where -…were you”. the inflection there is so damn significant you can hear his voice cracks it’s like the words are pouring out and he has to stop himself like if you listen a few times you can hear he kind of stops it’s v short and quick like after saying “where” then there’s a slight pause and he continues. paired with his troubled expression it really does highlight something vulnerable in his face here.
“i was kinda… lost, and found myself drawn out to this place”
well that’s a pretty deep frown. nOW THIS IS SOMETHING I REALLY WANT TO TALK ABOUT THOUGH. bc keith does hesitate for a slight second and it’s really damn significant when he does this with his speech even if it’s slight bc keith is so direct and pretty imperative when he speaks like sometimes he even chops out words from sentences to keep momentum and get to the point faster, and he doesn’t often falter (im not talking about the stuttering he does sometimes which is often paired with lying or averting the truth - that’s a different Zone of his speech).
i mean times where he hesitates in a context that is painted quite emotional and keith is the focus of the scene for the audience. there are a few key times this has happened and it’s like !!!!!! WOAH!!!! bc it says so much and this is more of Mini Version of these which is really exciting to me bc keith breaking his usual speech patterns and deviating even for a second says a lot imo. also we should take into account what his expression looked like before he started talking about Himself and his personal situation following the loss of shiro:
once he mentions garrison:
you can see a few things happening most notably his eyebrows creasing, and eyes no longer look up but casting down. you can’t really see it with the shots but if you play the frames back his head does actually tilt downtoo.
easiest to kind of see here. he goes from looking up to looking down both with his head and eyes.
also look at that collar jfc keith ily
“then you showed up”
there’s a bit of a pause here where they look at each other and silence falls. shiro breaks eye contact very deliberately with keith whilst keith keeps his eyes fixed on shiro:
idk about anyone else here but to me at least it looks like shiro is considering for a second the impact of his absence on keith. like the way his eyes shift and his expression changes it looks like he’s piecing something together himself here.
then shiro kind of flounders, turning to the others to introduce himself if you hear how he’s speaking he doesn’t actually sound that confident until the end of his sentence “i should-… thank you all” .
he also mirrors exactly what keith does with “where-..were you” / which is slowing down and pausing at the start of the sentence before putting it back together. so it’s plausible to suggest that what he’s seen here/ what he’s thinking about has clearly made some sort of impression on him enough to throw him off for a second.
yes granted we have to take into account everything the day has had in store for him, but it’s the Considering Look + everything about these frames that makes sense for it to be linked to keith’s words.
so yeah. i think the notes are repeated intentionally and keith wrote it out twice. it’s clear that whilst he really endured and kept going, whilst he did some incredible work out in the desert and tried to realign his focus and channel his chaotic energy and direction into something (this is something i really wanna meta on hardcore hhHHHh) he was obviously shaken and affected deeply by the loss of shiro from his life.
basically we see a pattern here for these scenes and a few more at the start of S1E1, and that’s the fact that every time the conversation turns to shiro’s return keith’s voice changes and his expression softens you can hear it. you can see it. all im saying is that it shows sincere open emotions and care.
Your roomie freshman year calls herself Inari, like the sushi, which you try not to roll your eyes at. It’s obviously a weaboo thing, since she’s definitely not anywhere near Japanese with her red-blonde hair and blue eyes. She also has two dads who work for the forest service - one blond and stocky, the other tall and red-haired, and they both call her Flower when they kiss her goodbye before leaving. You’re too polite to ask which one is her real dad.
There’s far weirder stuff at university to worry about than that.
Inari (who, thank god, doesn’t put up anime posters or talk about manga and maybe you were wrong about the nickname?) pays as much lip service to the weird traditions of Elsewhere as everyone else does, and a few more besides. She accepts them without comment when other people laugh them off, like they’re common sense, like she’s done it all her life. When people whisper about seeing things in the deep end of the pool or in the forest or in the depths of the library, she doesn’t blink an eye. When you whisper to her one night that you think these strange traditions might actually be in place for a reason she says “of course they are.” Like she’s known all along.
Inari wears her iron and carries her salt, but she doesn’t add to the stories and the gossip and hysteria. She’s aiming for law school, which you can already tell that she’ll be great at. You share theology and history and you’ve never seen her lose a debate. She’s crafty and smart and more focused than anyone else you’ve met at Elsewhere, and you wonder if she’s decided she just doesn’t have time for the stories. You wonder how someone can both accept and completely ignore The Neighbours. You wish you could.
Then Apples from your lit class gets replaced by something Else, and her girlfriend spends the evening bawling in your room Inari listens, then sighs, and packs a bag. Then she pulls a rusty iron bar out of her closet, and heads out into the forest under the cover of moonlight. You don’t want to watch, you don’t want to think about what might happen. You clench your iron medallion tighter and try to tell yourself that the hulking dark shape that appears next to her is just the shadows of the trees, that you didn’t see the moonlight glint off green, inhuman eyes.
(You never expect to see her again.)
Except she comes back, and Apples is back in her place, seeming none the worse for wear (though she leaves paper-wrapped notebooks by the fountain every full moon until she graduates). Inari says nothing, but during finals she disappears into the library after someone else, clutching her her iron bar and accompanied by a tall man in a black frock coat.
“How do you do it?” You ask when you can’t stand not knowing. “How do you know…”
Inari shrugs. “My fairy godfather taught me how to be the right kind of persuasive. It’s simple once you know how. You speak softly… and carry a big stick.”
You hope that in this case, fairy godfather is some queer term. You’re afraid to ask her clarify.
After that the whispers start. That if you’re desperate to get someone back, you go to Inari, who never seems particularly happy, but eventually accepts most pleas. She can’t and won’t help everyone, of course. If your friend was desperate enough to kiss Anna Monday there’s nothing to be done. And she always asks for a favor in return, to be held in trust until a time of her choosing.
A favor in trust is a serious price, at Elsewhere. But at least Inari is human, they reason, staring at her bare hand wrapped around the iron bar.
Zelda in BotW is an amazing character. If I had to make a list of the 10 best characters in the LoZ games, I have a hard time imagining she wouldn’t be on it. And nearly everything I’ve seen from other people who have played the game has been bursting with positivity and appreciation for this Zelda.
However, I’m unfortunately not surprised to have eventually run across someone calling her “a miserable cunt” and a “shitty little shit bag” who is “demoralizing [Link] into oblivion” with over 100 people liking/reblogging their post.
There are a couple of things to say in response to this. For starts, Jesus christ calm down. It’s wild to me how ready people are to hate characters for almost anything (and it overwhelmingly happens with female characters–jeez I wonder why). And second, did we even play the same game? Because you know what the WORST we ever saw Zelda acting towards Link was?
That’s… that’s it. She told him she didn’t need an escort and shouted at him to stop following her. And this wasn’t just the worst that Zelda ever acted towards Link. It was also the ONLY time we saw her shouting at him or being mean to him. Was it rude/crummy/something Link didn’t deserve? Totally. Was it her being ~a miserable shitty little shit bag cunt that fucking destroyed Link’s sense of self worth~? Hell no. How the hell do you extrapolate THAT MUCH out of such a small scene?
Just to help paint a larger, and more negative picture of Zelda, let’s talk about another memory. In the first memory, which was of Zelda preforming the ceremony to appoint Link as her knight, Zelda was acting very clearly depressed during the whole thing. That would have conveyed to Link how unhappy Zelda was with him being her knight, which would have surely made Link feel shitty. So there, that’s something else people who hate this Zelda can point to. But you know what? If you want to analyze things like this, Link also made Zelda feel shitty. Oh, sure, we all know that Link made Zelda feel shitty because of her own insecurities about being a failure of a royal princess while Link had successfully become the master of the Master Sword. But Link’s own behavior also made Zelda feel shitty. We saw in the third memory that Zelda would try to talk normally with Link. Talking casually and cheerfully about making adjustments to one of the Divine Beasts because that’s what she was passionate about! But Link… would never say anything back in response. He was silent. He was her appointed knight, but he wouldn’t even talk to her when she tried to talk to him. In fact, at that point Link had NEVER spoken to Zelda, as she expressed in her diary
Imagine if their situations were reversed, and we saw Link talking to Zelda and Zelda refusing to respond to him and just staring at him with a blank expression–and then Link wrote in his diary about how stressful that was for him and how it made him feel like she thought he was a failure and hated him. The people who hate BotW Zelda would be jumping on that as an example of what a bitch Zelda was to Link. Even though when Link did it to Zelda, there’s no problem whatsoever apparently. Link was just a smol little precious angel that was cowering beneath Zelda’s “toxic belittling and dominance,” as one person described it.
(And real quick… you know who was ACTUALLY “belittling” and “demoralizing” Link? Fucking Revali. You know, the guy who would walk right up to Link and go on a giant, passive aggressive and mockery-filled rant at Link about how he’s better than Link and Link doesn’t deserve the expectations that others have of him. I still think Revali is a solid character because it’s good to have a diverse cast with varied personalities and different relationship dynamics with each other. But for crying out loud, how is anyone going to hate on Zelda for how she acted towards Link early on when Revali was there being a straight up dick with 0 tragic character motivation behind him to make us sympathetic to why he acted like such a wad?)
Of course I don’t believe that Link deserves any hate for being silent around Zelda for so long. Just like how I don’t believe that Zelda deserves any hate for the way she acted towards and felt about Link in the early memories. They were two youths who had the weight of the world placed upon their shoulders. Link’s ability to express himself was crushed by the weight of the expectations and judging eyes of everyone around him. Zelda lost her mother, was denied expressions of love from her father, was terrified that she was a failure who would doom the world to destruction because of her inability to access her powers, and was was stuck with a successful, brilliant knight who she assumed hated her and had no way of being told otherwise because HE WOULDN’T EVEN TALK TO HER.
But despite all that the two became close. Link saved Zelda’s life. Zelda reevaluated how she thought of him and even apologized for her past behavior
Zelda made an effort and kept talking to him, trying to get him to open up to her. And eventually he did, and she was able to learn the reason why he wouldn’t talk to her, or anyone, in the past. They traveled together. She examined his wounds after battle. They went out to collect specimens in the fields together. Zelda tried to get Link to lick a frog in the name of science. Link taught Zelda how to bond with her horse. They saw their home fall to Calamity Ganon and learned of the deaths of their family and friends. Their world collapsed. They fled. They defended each others’ lives, each saving the other. Zelda spent 100 years suffering alone to contain the abomination that destroyed their land while Link recovered from the injuries he gained protecting her. They fought together again. They freed Hyrule from 100 years of darkness and set out once again to rebuild their kingdom together.
But yeah. Zelda was such a cunt, right?
I mean, you can’t please everyone. That’s just to be expected. People are different. People have different attitudes and values, and like and enjoy different things, so there’s no piece of media that everyone will have the same thoughts and feelings on. It’s like how on the Nintendo eShop, BotW for the Wii U has 4719 five star reviews… and 21 one star reviews. You can’t please everyone. But again, jesus christ some people are just ready to violently hate Zelda for having extremely well developed character flaws and a rocky start to her relationship with Link that was the result of both of their individual issues clashing and preventing them from connecting and understanding each other even though they both felt nearly the exact same way. And even if you want to insist that everything bad about their early relationship was 100% Zelda’s fault alone, I wonder how Zelda could possibly make up for it… maybe putting in the effort to develop a very positive relationship with Link, saving his life just as he had saved hers, and spending 100 years in Ganon Jail would be enough to make up for it?
…nah. You’ve got to imprison yourself for at least TWO HUNDRED years to make up for telling someone to stop following you one time. Totally.
I'm not usually one for angst, but I just had a thought and maybe you can give your insight on it too. What if Seven & MC both died in [insert some sort of accident here] and entrusted their child(ren) to Saeran? How do you think that would go? qq thank youuuuu
(◞‸◟；) so sad but I will write!
The news of the car accident was jarring for Saeran
But his new title of legal guardian to his niece, his brother and sister-in-laws 6 year old daughter, was overwhelming to say the least
He remembered them asking if they could put him down in the will and he just shrugged it off as something you did, he never actually thought anything would come of it
The first day was the hardest
She was quiet
More quiet than she normally was
He could tell that she was sad and scared
In her little hands she had been clutching a picture of her with her parents on her 6th birthday
His place wasn’t exactly set up for kids
He hadn’t even been able to grab most of her stuff or her bed from the old house
So he placed some blankets and a pillow on the couch for her
“Are you…hungry?” he asked
Though she still didn’t make eye contact with anything but the floor, she shook her head ‘no’
And Saeran sighed in relief
As he was staring into his empty cabinets at a few cans and an old box of crackers
A grocery store trip would be a must the next day
He had Yoosung watch her during the afternoon so he could go out
He figured it would be too much for her to go home and see everything so soon
It was sad to see all of the things scattered around the apartment
Saeyoung’s half-finished toy projects still lay on his work bench
The calendar hanging on the wall with appointments that will never be made
Spoiled food in the fridge
He lingered in the hall to look at photos
There were the wedding ones
Saeyoung hugging Saeran during the reception, a huge grin on his face as always
And pictures from the birth of his niece
He had never seen Saeyoung so happy
Saeran remembered holding her small body for the first time in the hospital
“She’s…cute,” he said with a half smile
He threw some toys that looked promising in a bag and loaded her bed up
Taking one last look at the place before leaving
He would have to figure out what to do with everything eventually, but for now he’d focus on his niece
His computer room was cleaned out and he moved her bed into there
“You can decorate or whatever…I tried to grab what I thought you would want but I can always go back,” he placed the bag next to her bed
She ran to the bag and began rummaging through it, throwing out a few things until she found what she wanted
A cat stuffed animal she’s had since she was an infant
She pressed the paw and Saeyoung’s voice came singing through
He had recorded both of their voices singing lullabies and saying sweet things to her
“Mommy and daddy love you so much”
She clutched the cat and began to cry
Oh shit, she’s crying…
Saeran froze for a moment not knowing what to do
He knelt down next to her and placed a hand on her back
“It’s okay to be sad…and it’s okay to cry,” he said softly
Not the best words but it was all he could think to say
He made a mediocre meal for dinner and she picked at it a lot without eating much
Saeran didn’t blame her, but he knew his cooking would improve the more he did it
Which, he guessed, would be just about every day now that she was there…
He cleaned up the plate’s and bowls from the table
“Is this normally when you go to bed?” he really was lost
She nodded and grabbed her kitty plush to get ready for bed
He could hear the sound clips from the cat going off intermittently as he washed the dishes
When he finished and her light was still on he peered in from the doorway to see her sitting in the bed crying softly
“Do you need something? To like…talk or something?”
She shook her head
“Well…mom and dad would…read to me,” she said through whimpers
Right, of course
“I’ll be right back,” he said
When he returned he had a book in one hand and was dragging his computer chair in the other
Sitting next to the bed he showed her the cover
“S-” he choked for a second, “your dad used to read this to me when we were your age,” he opened it up
“Dad did?” she wiped her eyes and seemed interested for the first time since she arrived
“Yeah, he did. He always made sure to explain things to me, and do voices,” Saeran smiled remembering it
“Dad did that for me, too,” she smiled
“I’m not your dad…but I can try my best to read it like he would.”
He closed the book and stood up
“Do you like ice cream?” he asked her
“Stories are always better with ice cream, I’ll go get some.”
I can definitely recommend lots of klance fics. As in, lots lots. I am not completely sure what you are looking for/what you have already read though, so I’m just gonna list some of my favorite authors with some of my favorite fics.
Quick additional info: there are no explicit fics on here, though some are rated mature. All of the stories have klance as their only ship but since I intended this to be author recs rather than fic recs, I will mention what kinds of other ships appear in other fics.
- Crossroads (106k): not quite canon verse, not quite AU - check the summary
- Plunged (6k): canon verse, Lance teaches Keith how to swim
- Roommates (6k): modern AU, Artist!Keith, Photographer!Lance, exactly what the title says
This author’s writing is amazingly smooth and I particularly enjoy their Keith. Crossroads was my favorite fic for a long, long time until I found some others that were just as good :D [this author also wrote some nsfw and sheith]
This author has a style of writing that makes you forget that time exists. Like, you read their stories, look up 2 hours later and go “what the hell I only just started reading 5 minutes ago”. Their fics are pretty action-heavy but the romance part never falls short. [they wrote a lot of nsfw, their newest fic is shklance]
- Entangled (102k): canon verse, Keith and Lance get mind-melded
- Right-hand Man (4k): canon verse, Keith approaches Lance after the end of season 2 to talk about their roles from now on
Amazing characterizations here. I particularly enjoyed the OS because it seemed like something that genuinely could happen like this in canon… sadly I don’t think it will, but one can dream, right :’D Also amazing art! [they wrote some nsfw]
I honestly don’t know why I like this author so much? Probably because they can squeeze an entire story into less than 10k words, complete with character development and appearances from friends etc. I liked many more of their OS but there are just so many, you should check it out for yourself. [they wrote some nsfw and shallura]
- Not That Bad (68k): modern AU, socially anxious!Keith, lots and lots of fluff
- just like that (10k): canon verse, Lance struggles with his crush on Keith
this author just? makes reading feel so good? so relaxing?? Their style is focused on conveying emotions and flows really nicely, I strongly recommend to give it a try. [their newest story is nsfw and includes lancelot]
This author is super good with emotions. You always end up feeling what the characters are feeling and I’d definitely recommend going through their other fics as well - once again, there are just so many that I won’t list them all. [they wrote some nsfw and shallura]
Another author that has a fantastic style of writing and portrays the characters really well. Also another author that wrote so many good things that I can’t possibly put them all on here. [they wrote some nsfw, sheith, shklance, shallura- lots of stuff, check the tags]
- The Quiet (40k, WIP): ghost AU, lance is the ghost
- 7 Days Series (pt 1 - 30k, pt 2 - 30k, pt 3 - 4k): canon verse, lance/keith get turned into babies
Amazing writing, plot-orientated. Don’t let that fool you though, the emotions never fall short. [they wrote some shallura, shance and other ships - also their fics aren’t rated. the ones listed are entirely sfw]
This writer has a really fluent and nice style of writing and they somehow manage to easily let lots of characters interact. Everyone feels extremely in character and nothing feels forced. Also I know nothing about cars and yet their fics belong to my favorites, so give it a try. [they wrote some shallura]
- Barbie Girl (2k): modern AU, soulmate AU, continuation
I’m not sure whether it’s just me but no matter what fic of them I read, they always feel– soft. Easy. Something good for in-between. One of their fics (not the ones listed here) has some pretty heavy topics in it and yet I still feel like that. [they wrote some shallura]
This author is amazing at writing angst. It just always hits you right in the feels. Like damn. I adore their writing so much but ho boy I was too scared to click the one Chara Death fic they wrote. I couldn’t do that to myself, the two longer OS that I listed here already gave me enough feelings. [they wrote some shallura]
I really really really enjoy this author’s Lance!! He feels incredibly in character and I swear I can see him act in canon just like he does in the fics. Their style of writing is fluent, nice and adapts really well to the situation.
[I also really enjoy witty_name’s and freshia’s fics, both of whom usually put background shallura into their fics though so I couldn’t list them here]
Aaaand that’s it for now! :D If you have a specific length/specific topics/specific ratings in mind for what you want to read, feel free to send another message!! You can also visit the fic rec tag on my blog, maybe you’ll find something else there.
/EDIT: now there is a part two with some other of my favorite fics
Summary: A top student, marks always high. College was not a dream for her…Except she didn’t have enough money. Her parents never earned much so they literally took care of themselves. Her boss acting as a dick towards her she quited her job. Even though she had no idea what she let herself into this was her only option.
Sometimes you stand naked in from the full length mirror in the bathroom and look at the shiny pink scar on your stomach that bears a stunning similarity to a washed up fish bone. Running the pads of your fingers over the raised skin you think about Sam, as if you’re rubbing a locket that reminds you of his unwavering love. A different version of yourself would be bothered by it, the tough, mangled flesh that healed without concern for aesthetics. But you feel grateful for Sam and, in a strange way, appreciative that Shadow Hill exists.
You’re lucky to be alive, this is your daily reminder.
Summary: You and Ethan are both Camp Counselors with a weird love-hate relationship going on. Word Count: 3,496 Warnings: Lots of mentions of sex, sexual tension all around, sexual innuendos. Yeah. A/N: I’ve tried to sooo hard to get my writing going, but work is sucking the energy out of me. I sincerely hope you like this imagine though! xx Also, sorry for any mistakes. I’m gonna edit this tomorrow!! xx
It was no secret that you and Ethan had a weird love-hate relationship. Some days you’d get along, and other days you’d fight like there was no tomorrow. You were both counselors at a Summer camp, this being the second year. You had met him last year and taken an immediate dislike to his cocky attitude and his confidence that he could get any girl to get on her knees for him. It pissed you off and you had wondered why the hell he had been hired in the first place. Some people would call it sexual tension, but you called it hate.
Some days, you would both get along but other days you were at each other’s throats. This was one of those days where he’d do everything in his power to annoy you, and you weren’t having it.
“Everyone pair up, grab a paddle boat and a vest. Please, stay safe and remember what we just went through.” You shouted over the sea of murmurs as the crowd dissipated to get their boats out.
