maybe i should stop posting these

Hey man. Look, i'm sorry i did that post n stuff. The reason i did the post was because i was extremely uncomfortable with your content, as well as the fanbase. Maybe i should've used better phrasing, maybe a little less harsh. I didn't at that time because i wasn't exactly thinking, but it wasn't meant to be a callout post, it was honestly just meant for people to know to not to do that. Side notes I completely forgot that post existed, and please stop calling me she. Would say more but i cant

It’s okay, I can understand you may not feel comfortable with my content since I’m self aware that it’s not for everyone - but yeahhh maybe you shouldn’t have used an actual person as an example, it’s a bit painful yknow? I’m not dangerous myself, but if you do something like that with the wrong person you may get in trouble, glad you realized your mistake tho, I realize I did mines too
I apologize for sharing your post and make fun of it, and I apologize for misgendering you, I saw someone calling you a she so I thought you used she/her pronouns, my bad

What do you mean this isn’t canon? Anti-Fraternization law? What are you talking about? Basically, Al and Mei are back from Xing, and Ed volunteered to take them to Roy’s office for some Xing-related business.

AHH, finally finished this! Wanted to post this last July 7 as a gift for myself but nope. Many thanks to @pahndah who’s been so patient with me on the anatomy ;u; as well as my FMA trash bbs @swordbreaker and @thecoolandspicyotaku for helping me with the ranking of Riza and Roy! (who’s already a Colonel and a General, respectively. I also hope you notice the uniform exchange) I know nothing, as in nothing, about the Military, so v many thanks to you two! (all uniform mistakes are mine!)

Day 1 of 30 days of encouragement!

There are times we bound to meet problems and troubles, and there are times we ask or tell ourselves: “Is it worth it?”, “This is not working.” , “Why am I so hopeless?” , “Maybe I should just give up,”

But honestly, we might just be that close to our goals before we decide to give up for once and for all. Hard work never lies or cheat you, and they will definitely pay off.

The only way to reach your goal is to stop telling yourself that you can’t do it. Only you have the control to do what you want and tell yourself what you want to hear.

Like the post said, your only limit is you.

you know I know it’s not fucking profitable for people to study certain degrees over others, but that doesn’t mean you should shit on people for studying what they love.

Furthermore you shouldn’t talk down to little kids saying they want to be a graphic designer, or a film maker, or an actor, or a musician, or whatever else you deem useless to society, because it’s not profitable in our sociopolitical systems. They have interests, and it doesn’t matter whether or not they’ll succeed on a global scale, that’s irrelevant, they don’t have to be groundbreaking to do what they want to do.

Money is not the fucking point, the point is the kid wants to do something the kid enjoys and is proud and excited about. Encourage children in most anything they’re interested in, as a matter of fact encourage most everyone to do shit they love within basic moral reasoning.

If a person isn’t immediately good at mathematics, physics, or even graphic designing, that doesn’t fucking mean you should shit on them and tell them to give up.

Encourage passions, passions and joy keep people alive. Interests go beyond money, because you can’t really use money if you’re fucking dead due to you feeling like a failure and never did what you truly loved.

You have no idea how successful a child or an adult is going to be in what they’re trying to learn about and do, stop fucking betting against them and maybe they’ll be more confident to improve their lives and the lives of others around them.

And again, people don’t have to be groundbreaking savants to do shit they like.

[and im literally actually a fucking poor person so don’t even act like I’m spouting some bourgeois propaganda tellin people to stay poor, i aint. i’m saying people should be allowed to enjoy things]

I like to point out small things. I cant stop talking Charioce. I dont think i will

When Charioce appeared in front of Jeanne and Nina. As you can see Jeanne was shocked and Nina concerned about Jeanne.

But as soon as Nina try to approach them. Charioce showed his sword in front of Jeanne.

And Nina stopped, because she concerned that Charioce might do something bad to Jeanne if Nina approach them. Charioce stopped Nina to approach them. Because she would have interrupt their talk.

Charioce smiled at Jeanne after he saw Nina, He might thought that “Oh so you too cooperated for this escape, But im sorry i cannot let you go”. Then he offered his bargain! He simply asked Jeanne’s cooperation.

Some might think that Charioce threatened Jeanne in that scene. He didnt, he has different intention. As far as we can see Charioce asked like three times Jeanne’s help. It has been never threat. It was always simply ask. And he always told Jeanne the reason why he wants her help. He does not just simply “ I will kill you , if you wont cooperate with me”

That is the threat.

But he is not just ask Jeanne’s help. But he makes bargain with her. “If you cooperate with me, You can take what you want.” It is not threat, guys.

After that Nina shouted at Charioce that something like “Why are you like this?” But Charioce put his sword down and approached Nina. What he said to Nina was that

It was not mockery. It was him being asked simply wondered. He knows the answer himself! Because he knows that Nina is not trying to escape because she is not enjoying prison life!

And he asked wondered question again. Even though he knows it! But Nina’s answer was “No” Because that is not she is.

“You havent changed.” It was just simple sentence that Charioce knows Nina. He knows that Nina what she is.

After that Charioce asked Nina

I put this picture two. Because it is important.

Would you dance with me again? This question was not mockery, was not threat , was not wondered question as well. It was simply his question that want to know by himself from Nina. It was question that has lot of meaning. The last time they met, Nina declared how she dislikes what he is doing. But his reaction before his smile was this

As you can see he does not look scary or anything. He feel hollow, sad and lonely. The girl he was interested told about how much she disliking him. Even if he is that guy who does not care his feelings, Even though he is not guy who change his mind for feelings. He is still human being. Even if he is strong willed, minded character. He still does feel.

But he asked this after that meeting, He concerned that if Nina still willing to dance with him again. Because after dance meeting, they were in battlefield, they were in different situation, Even if they were on the different side, He still concerned that “Im that guy you dislike, But if you dont mind, do you still have that wish that “ i want to dance with you again.” Do you still willing to dance with me? But Nina’s answer was

We might too much concerned Nina’s reaction for Chris’s identity. But this scene never show cases that Charioce revealed himself. Because we dont know if Charioce did know that Nina didnt release who Charioce was. Nina revealed herself. Not just she hurted herself but she hurt Charioce too.

He asked “Would you mind?” question. But Nina’s answer was “ i cant believe it.”

And then scene did not show us Charioce expression after Nina’s “I cant believe it” They did not show us. HE IS HUGE!

Not only Jeanne shocked at their interaction, But soldiers that helding Nina had shocked expression. Their King is asking question from this girl with gentle expression. Even though we see Nina’s expression. But did not see Charioce’s does not mean he did not hurt. But i dont think he show too much hurt expression because he strong willed, minded guy, He can put up with that, But that does not mean he did not hurt.

After that Jeanne told that cant cooperate with Charioce because she does not want to betray the Gods and people who trust her. Charioce simply just put up with that. Come on guys he is strong one there. IF he was just evil or loves to make threat. He can simply do that. But he did not. He did not say that to Jeanne “ if you dont want to cooperate with me, I will kill this Nina girl”. He did not ask Nina’s help, He did not try to use Nina. Not just Nina. Same for Jeanne too. He simply offered bargain. But as soon as she declined Charioce go along with that. Charioce has more to it. You can try to understand him.

Also one thing, this is about Tale of Love and Ruin!

Love is not only about romantic!

  • Love is all about Jeanne’s motherly love to El
  • Love is all about Mugaro’s love for Azazel
  • Love is all about Azazel’s love for Mugaro
  • Love is all about Hamsa, Bacchus and Rita’s parental love for Nina
  • Love is all about Nina and Favaro’s teacher and apprentice relationship
  • Love is all about Favaro and Kaisar’s friendship
  • Love is all about the new born friendship between Nina and Jeanne
  • Love is all about Azazel and Nina’s partnership
  • Love is all about Sofiel’s kindness that wants to help El
  • Love is all about Favaro’s love for Amira

But why it is not love, cant be love, cant become love when it comes to Charioce? Why he cant feel love? Everyone can love someone and loved by someone. Why Charioce only cant feel that? Even if he is evil or not. Anybody can feel love. This is tale of Love and Ruin guys. Love is big element of this series. Also Charioce is one of the main characters. When all guys feeling love and loved by someone one or another, only Charioce does not mean cant feel love and loved by someone. Tale of Love and Ruin applied to Charioce as well.

  • Love is all about Nina’s love for Charioce
  • Love is all about Charioce’s love for Nina

Love and Peace! Guys

anonymous asked:

How do I make my dialogue seem more authentic and less formulaic?

Hi, anon!  Thanks for your question :)

This is a common issue, and one that I’ve been working on in recent years.  Improving primarily comes from observation – listening to real-life conversations, watching experienced actors, and even recording your own thoughts/speech/monologues.  Writing good dialogue means that you have to analyze and pick apart speech patterns that our brains usually filter out.  It’s all about hypervigilance.  This is how you collect the tools you need.

Features of Authentic Dialogue

Notice the use of the word “features” – because it’s not just words or phrases that create dialogue you can hear in your head.  Speech patterns, interplay between characters, silences, and environmental factors can make a conversation come to life.  So when dialogue is sounding stale or formulaic, try some of the following:

  • Favored terms – The number one thing that really pulls me into dialogue is when I see a character use the same term/phrase a few times throughout the story.  That’s how real people speak!  We have cliches that we grew up hearing or that stick in our head, and we use them whenever they apply.  So build character with this tool.
  • Delay and “loading” phrases – Formulaic dialogue is made up of straightforward skeleton sentences: “I’m sorry I lied to you.  I was scared.”  Adding in delay makes time for characters to think, which helps readers hear their voices: “I, uh… I’m sorry, you know.  For lying.  I guess I was just scared.”
  • Unfinished thoughts – Some of our thoughts are expressed verbally.  Some of them are kept to ourselves.  But some of our thoughts stop somewhere in between – we get them halfway out, and we realize we either don’t want to say it or don’t know how.  So when it applies, have your characters start to share something (maybe something “dangerous” or personal or out of line) and stop – rephrase.  This works especially well in situations of conflict.
  • Run-ons and fragments – This sounds similar, but it’s different.  This isn’t a conscious stopping and going – it’s just normal human grammar mistakes.  Writers are so focused on their own grammar that they treat dialogue the same way, which isn’t realistic.  So have characters mesh two sentences into one, or express thoughts without a subject + verb structure.  It doesn’t make you a bad writer.  Don’t worry.
  • Forgetting words or phrases – This happens to a varying degree with all people.  Having a character stop mid-sentence and snap their fingers and ask:

“What is it?  When it’s like something that happened, like, because of fate?”
“Uh, coincidence?”
“No, more like it’s supposed to happen, but it’s still- serendipity.  That’s it.”

This can take up valuable page space, though, so only use it when it applies or when your conversation is lacking interactivity.

  • Shorter speech bursts with action in between – Not all of what a character has to say should be expressed in one long monologue.  In fact, it can often be better to write a sentence or two at a time than to write out a whole argument at once.  When a character pauses, fill the space with action or internal dialogue.  This is best for scenes in which two characters are walking somewhere or engaging in an activity.

Beyond these ideas, though, I have a few extra tips that involve two or more characters.  When 2+ people are engaging in a conversation, they are prone to:

  • Cut each other off – Holy heck, this happens a lot in real life, especially if your characters are both talkative or dominant.  Conversation sounds more realistic when your characters aren’t acting like they’re on a debate stage and they aren’t allowed to speak until a light comes on.  Even if it’s just cutting off the last word of each other’s sentence, or attempting to interrupt unsuccessfully, give it a shot and see how it amps up a conversation.
  • Stop listening – Or they never start listening at all.  When characters are distracted or in the middle of conflict, they may not hear what each other says – or they may misinterpret.  If you need to pace a conversation or increase miscommunication, this is a good way to do it.
  • Hang on to details – When Character A makes a long statement, Character B doesn’t always listen all the way through – but not always intentionally.  People can get caught on certain details in what’s said.  For example:

“All I’m saying is that- listen.  When two people are in a relationship, they don’t go around behind each other’s backs, okay?  Even if it has nothing to do with each other!  It’s full disclosure.  How would you like it if I did something like that?  If I just… looked at you and lied to you?  Wouldn’t it bother you?  Would you ever look at me and wonder, ‘What if she doesn’t mean that?  What if she’s hiding something else?’”

“Is that what this is?” he asked, eyes narrowed playfully.  He bit back a smile.  “A relationship?”

  • Get distracted – When two characters talk, they don’t talk in a vacuum – there are environmental factors that stall or accelerate conversation.  If two characters are rushing to get dressed for a party, they will speak quickly or rashly.  If they’re in line at Subway, they’re thinking about what they want on their sandwich.  If they’re driving, they may need to stop talking to figure out which exit they take off the highway.  Allow their environment to interact with their conversation, and your scene will feel more immersive.

That’s all the advice I have right now!  If you have any other questions, send them in and I’ll respond shortly :)  Good luck!

*NEW*

Kibum’s really cute, glad to see that Jonghyun thinks so too.

(please read the tags ^^)

1. Maybe they should stop writing fan fiction. Arguably, Moffat should have stopped after the debacle of Jekyll back in 2007, but it was low budget and people can learn from their mistakes. He went on to make something of a mess in Dr. Who. Now S4 of Sherlock was a bit of a mess. He’s going through the classics, because they know these will sell. That impacts us as an audience, and it impacts the public that funds BBC programs.

2. Dracula is already part of the homoerotic literature tradition. I just posted a series of scholarly articles about it, but this is the best non-fiction book on the topic of vampirism and media of which I am aware. I took a course from this man in university, and it’s amazing. The Vampire Lectures by Laurence Rickels.

“Bela Lugosi may – as the eighties gothic rock band Bauhaus sang – be dead, but the vampire lives on. A nightmarish figure dwelling somewhere between genuine terror and high camp, a morbid repository for the psychic projections of diverse cultures, an endlessly recyclable mass-media icon, the vampire is an enduring object of fascination, fear, ridicule, and reverence. In The Vampire Lectures, Laurence A. Rickels sifts through the rich mythology of vampirism, from medieval folklore to Marilyn Manson, to explore the profound and unconscious appeal of the undead.Based on the course Rickels has taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara, for several years (a course that is itself a cult phenomenon on campus), The Vampire Lectures reflects Rickels’s unique lecture style and provides a lively history of vampirism in legend, literature, and film. Rickels unearths a trove that includes eyewitness accounts of vampire attacks; burial rituals and sexual taboos devised to keep vampirism at bay; Hungarian countess Elisabeth Bathory’s use of girls’ blood in her sadistic beauty regimen; Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with its turn-of-the-century media technologies; F. W. Murnau’s haunting Nosferatu; and crude, though intense, straight-to-video horror films such as Subspecies. He makes intuitive, often unexpected connections among these sometimes wildly disparate sources.More than simply a compilation of vampire lore, however, The Vampire Lectures makes an original and intellectually rigorous contribution to literary and psychoanalytic theory, identifying the subconscious meanings, complex symbolism, and philosophical arguments – particularly those of Marx, Freud, and Nietzsche – embeddedin vampirism and gothic literature.“

3. I’ve been collecting vampire content since I was nine, and I know some of us are glad that Carmilla isn’t being touched, but…there is enough to queerbait with in Dracula. BBC is supposedly trying to work on their representation numbers, and only funding new shows that show they will work toward that goal, but the decision on that came pre S4 of Sherlock.

So you’re thinking about leaving concrit on a fanfiction...

Hi there!  Dresupi here! Fanfic author, mostly MCU.

So you’re browsing Ao3…you’re having fun.  You’re reading all your favorite ship or fandom has to offer.  And EGADS!  You’ve spotted an error in one of the fics.

Well.  Surely the next step is for you to let them know in the comments.  Right?  That’s what they’re for, after all.  Communicating with the author, right?

 Wrong.

Wait WHAT?  Dres…you’re telling me I shouldn’t alert this writer to their grave error in judgement (Or grammar, or characterization, or anything else I deem incorrect in this work they’ve posted out in public for everyone to see?)

Yes, imaginary fic commenter.  Yes, that’s exactly what I’m telling you.

But WHYYYY?

Calm down, I’m going to lay this out for you.  All professional like.  With bullets and everything.  ;) I got you, Babe.  Don’t worry.

  • Okay, so the first thing you (as a potential commenter of fanfiction) need to do is decide…Did you like the fic?  If yes, please continue to the next step.  If no, I need you to go back up to the top of your web browser and click the arrow pointing left.  That will take you OUT of the fic and enable you to continue on your search for the perfect fanfic. :D
  • Okay, so, if you’re still reading, you’ve decided that yes.  You DID like the fanfic.  YAY!  I’m so happy for you!  I love finding good fics!  I really do!  It’s the best feeling to find someone who writes your OTP just right, isn’t it?  … Oh wait…you mean…you DIDN’T like the way they wrote your OTP?  A scene was too short?  The word count over all was too short?  Characters were OOC?  Goodness gracious!   Well, in that case…I’m going to need you to go on up to the top left of your screen and click the arrow pointing left.  This will take you OUT of the fic and enable you to continue on your search for the perfect fic with perfect A+ Characterization.
  • NOW.  Okay.  So you liked the fic.  You liked the length.  The characterization.  AWESOME!  PARTY TIME!  … Oh?  A factual error, you say?  Oh no!  That really is kind of embarrassing, you know?  Really quick, though.  BEFORE you comment, can you check the author’s note and see if the author is asking for help?  A beta?  A general okay-ness with constructive criticism?  (Some authors really like it).   But no?  You don’t see anything like that in the author’s note?  Hmm.  Well, this is a tough situation.  You can either leave your comment sans unprompted concrit…or you can venture up to the top left of your screen and click on the left hand arrow.  This will take you OUT of the fic and enable you to continue on your search for the perfect fic with A+ characterization with bonus fact checking!
  • Alright, alright, alright.  You’ve made it this far!  This must be an AMAZING fic.  Outstanding!  :D  All except for those pesky grammar and/or syntax errors, right?  Wow.  These are really interfering with your ability to enjoy the fic.  Either this author is in desperate need of a beta, or maybe it’s just that ONE GLARING ERROR in an otherwise perfect fic.  It’s time to leave a comment, tell the author, right?  *sigh*  Take a glance at the author’s note.  Is the author asking for concrit?  Perhaps there’s a call for a beta reader?  Or just a general call for help?  No?  *deeper sigh* Sorry, Friend.  If you’re able, please leave your comment sans concrit, otherwise…yeah…you know what to do.  Back click.

Really though…what’s the big deal about me leaving concrit?  Even if mine is a touch rude.  I know for a FACT {this author} has many more positive comments.  This isn’t going to amount to more than a drop in the bucket.

Well…and this is speaking from personal experience as an author.  You could have hundreds upon hundreds of positive comments, but that one negative, or concritty comment is the one that stands out.  It’s the one that makes an author stop before pressing that “post” button.  It’s the one that makes them second guess themselves.

But Dres, these authors are sharing their works in the public.  They should really develop thicker skins about this kind of thing.

Well.  I mean.  This isn’t really up to you to decide.  This isn’t something you paid money for.  All you’ve invested is your time.  Leaving unwanted concrit in the comments of a fanfiction is the online equivalent of receiving a handmade sweater from your Nana and saying, “This is cool, but I’d rather have had the store-bought one…”

Maybe this author is having a really hard time this week.  Maybe their word count isn’t up to snuff because of it.  Maybe this was all they were able to put out there?  Maybe their beta reader is on vacation or taking a break?  Maybe none of the above, maybe this is just simply the best they can do and they’re very proud of what they’ve accomplished!

Fanfiction is a free service. Fic authors take their free time to craft and write these stories.  A lot of us aren’t professional writers.  We’re moms.  Students.  High schoolers.  Investment bankers.  Scientists. Therapists. {insert name of other careers here}. In other words, people with real lives, who spend what little free time we have, creating content for you to enjoy.

It isn’t like if you pay money for the latest book from your favorite author, only to find out that they’ve killed off your favorite character and made the other character into a villain and completely mucked up the series past all canonical help.

Okay, okay.  I get you.  It’s rude.  But can’t I at least point out the grammatical/syntax errors?

And here’s where it gets tricky.  And I’d like to defer to my mom on this one.

She always used to say, “Never point out a fault that someone can’t fix in less than three seconds.”

She used it to pertain to people’s appearances, their attitude, or their speech patterns.  But I think it applies here too.

I think of single typos as like…the literary version of having spinach in your teeth.  Yes.  This is something you could technically point out.  KINDLY.  You wouldn’t point and laugh at someone you didn’t really know who had spinach stuck between their front teeth, would you?

(I would certainly HOPE the answer is no.)

Likewise, if you simply must point out a single typo…do it nicely?  Otherwise, it looks like you read this thing that this fic author put out into the world…this little piece of themselves…you read it, and found nothing good whatsoever.  Just that typo.  Maybe you didn’t mean it that way.  But it’s what it looks like to that author.

On the other side of this coin…if the entire fic is a grammatical mess?  Just…back click out.

Here’s why I say that.  To you, it might look like My Immortal…but to the person that wrote it?  It looks like the hard-work and effort they poured into it.  And you never know.  The person that wrote it could be ESL.  *shrugs*  And your comment could be the thing that keeps them from ever trying again.  You never really know.  It’s safer to be cautious.

I’m going to double star and bold this next thing.  Because I feel like it’s super important.

**A better way to point out typos, grammatical errors or basically any other errors is to contact the author directly.**

I link my tumblr at the bottom of all my fics for this reason.  And I’ve gotten some lovely messages from people informing me of formatting errors, typos and grammatical errors. It literally takes the same amount of time to click on a link and type out your comment as it does to leave it at the bottom of the fic.  And I can tell you that I do not mind getting told about errors in private.  It’s when things get dragged out into the open that I start getting defensive.

Which brings me to my last point before I shut up and leave you to your day.

“I didn’t mean this in a bad way!  I was only trying to help!  Why is this author getting so defensive???”

I’d like to tell you about a little thing called tone.

Something that is completely lost in online messaging and commenting.

While you, the commenter, might have not intended anything bad from your comment…the author could have read it in a completely different way. Know why?

I can’t speak for everyone, but for me?  Personally?  It’s because I’m self-conscious.  Yes.  I’m super self-conscious about everything I share.  Whether it’s a short prompt or an update to a longer fic, I’m self-conscious about sharing it.  And that translates over to how I read tone in online messages and comments.  I hate that I can’t read things neutrally, but…here I am.  In all my imperfection.

I guess in short, what I’m saying is…and this is probably going to earn me some enemies for whatever reason…I mean…I stood up to someone leaving concrit on one of my fics and got called a c*nt and an attention whore for it.  *shrugs*  People are gonna do what they want to do, and that’s how it is.

It takes absolutely no time to back click out and say nothing.  *shrugs*  It takes zero effort to not be a dick.  So please.  Just…don’t be a dick?  Feed your authors.  Don’t leech from them.

so i might be stepping out of line making this post but i feel it needs to be made so yolo i guess.

i know a lot of millenials have a sort of knee-jerk negative reaction towards abrahamic religions (really mostly christianity and judaism) and i understand. really, i get it. my dad is a pastor, and he used his religon to abuse, demean, and control me at every opportunity. he regularly tells my sisters that he’s “so sad im going to hell” and other sundry passive aggressive nonsense, so trust me i get it. i understand how a certain religion can be triggering to someone.

but there is a very important point here, and i really hope you understand this.

you cannot let it make you prejudiced, and, let me be clear here, im talking specifically about antisemitism.

i know exactly whats going on in your head, because for a long time it was what was going on in my head. you hear the word “judaism” and you have flashbacks to sunday school and the old testament and all the times you sat in a church and felt personally attacked, and you associate that with judaism and jewish people because most of the things that upset you were in the old testament.

you can have your triggers, but you can’t let those triggers become an excuse to further marginalize a minority thats already attacked from literally every position of power there is. every major religion has leaders who are antisemitic, every country has a history of marginalizing jewish people, every person on the planet grows up in an inherently antisemitic world and has to unlearn that sort of toxic mindset.

and maybe this post should have been made by a jewish person, or somebody with more education on the subject than me but i think its really important that people don’t let their personal experiences with organized religion turn them into the kind of prejudiced person that hurt them in the first place.

as a romni i have a shared tragedy with jewish people, so i feel like it was easier for me to step back and be like “woah, your thought process here is super toxic and you need to stop” but i feel like a lot of white christian-raised people don’t really have that touchstone and need somebody to be like “wake up, what you are doing is wrong”

Pink Chocobo shirt for Iris, and Black Chocobo shirt for Gladio. There’s loads more colors too. I need to stop putting off drawing the tattoos (⋟﹏⋞)

Sooooo… Am I going to finish this or what? I spent WAY too much time on that Square Enix Cafe logo ;-;

Hayden Christensen’s performance as Anakin Skywalker is underrated

This post is something that I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and something that I finally need to get around to sharing with other people. I should have done this immediately after re-watching the first three episodes with Nannette while things were still fresh, but instead, I’m doing it almost a year later. I don’t remember exactly all the details or specific examples, but I’ll try my best. Maybe I’ll come back and edit this after I watch them again. Anyway…

Hayden Christensen did an incredible job with Anakin Skywalker. Before you stop reading because there’s no possible way I could be right, hear me out; maybe I’ll change the way you see his acting performance in Star Wars: Episodes II and III.

The biggest complaint I hear about Christensen’s performance as Anakin Skywalker is that he is stiff, delivering his lines awkwardly and playing his role mostly devoid of emotion. It just doesn’t seem good enough or realistic. I think that this could have been a deliberate choice by Christensen because of who Anakin is and because of what life and circumstance has shaped Anakin into being.

Anakin is an incredibly emotional character. He thinks with his heart instead of logic, often following through on impulsive actions brought on by those emotions. Anakin’s intense feelings are prevalent in many scenes: he is worried about and seeks power to protect his mom and Padme, he murders an entire Tusken village after learning about the death of Shmi, he is angered and upset that the council won’t make him a Jedi master, and pretty much any other scene involving Padme, like when Padme falls out of the gunship in Episode II and Anakin almost risks expulsion from the Jedi Council by going after her instead of working to end the war. This emotion is heavily contrasted by Obi-wan’s desire to adhere to their duty and think logically.

In fact, it’s this emotional driving force Anakin possesses that makes most of the Jedi Council worried about him. Anakin is out of place among the Jedi. The literal first line of the Jedi code is: “There is no emotion, there is peace.” This is where Christensen’s acting comes into play. Anakin is uncomfortable under this restriction, and that’s why he seems so robotic at times. Anakin is an incredibly emotional person under serious pressure by everyone in his life (except Padme) to stop being emotional. His humor even evolves into the monotone, deadpan sarcasm that is seen with Obi-wan. He’s working so hard at suppressing his emotions that he’s forcibly correcting his speech tones and gestures. This is incredibly in character and a wonderful performance given by Christensen.

The stiffness and awkwardness with which Christensen delivers some lines and acts some scenes is no mistake. It’s deliberate, and it’s incredibly well done. This is obvious when contrasted with Anakin’s emotional scenes where Christensen acts with passion. It’s even further evidenced as Anakin stops his efforts to smother his emotions and becomes Darth Vader. From his appointment to Lord Vader until his famous duel with Obi-wan he is free from the constraints on his emotions. We see a harrowed man who hasn’t quite realized the extent of his actions wipe out the younglings. We see a caring, concerned and loving man check on Padme to make sure she’s safe and that she isn’t aware of what he has done to protect her. We see an angry man confront his brother and teacher in a blinding rage. We see the emotion that he’s been hiding the rest of the time.

Christensen’s performance is resonating and undeniably impactful during the final moments leading up to the conclusion of Episode III. It doesn’t make any sense that that same conviction and heart wouldn’t appear throughout all of Episode II and III unless there was a reason that Anakin would be forcing himself to hide it. The Jedi Order itself was that reason, and the stiffness and awkwardness that is Anakin (barring the emotional scenes where his feelings come out) has some deep meaning to it. Next time you want to drag Christensen for his performance, take a moment to think why the character would be portrayed that way. Christensen did a wonderful, incredibly underrated job with his role as Anakin Skywalker.

TL;DR: Anakin is an incredibly emotional character forced into hiding and suppressing those emotions by the Jedi Order and Code. This is why Hayden Christensen’s performance may seem stiff and awkward at times. The awkwardness is purposeful and his performance is incredibly underrated.

Disclaimer: Anakin is my favorite character in the Star Wars universe, so this may just be me grasping at straws trying to justify what people say is a subpar performance from Hayden Christensen. However, I feel like I’ve given this analysis objective treatment and truly believe that he deserves more praise for what I consider to be an incredible job portraying such an interesting and deep character.

Hey maybe we should go back to liking video games we want to like and maybe stop harassing people who like them or shaming people for liking certain games. It’s been pretty bad on on this website lately and I see a lot of people feeling bad for liking games or being excited for games that others keep bringing down. Be nice to each other. Let people be excited and happy if it isn’t harming anyone.
