In honor of being back in the States, American obviously had to be my first pick for this playlist. And do you want to know something really funny? This song started playing as I was landing on American soil (or tarmac if you want to be literal) for the first time in 4 months. Pretty cool.
Lean On has probably been my most played track of the month of May. I’ve always been a pretty big fan of Major Lazer and their newest track doesn’t disappoint. I have mixed feelings about the music video (cultural appropriation or nah?), so I linked the lyric video instead. Who doesn’t love some Major Lazer cartoons?
If you want an excellent back-road-cruisin’ song, check out one of Best Coasts latest tracks, California Nights. During my solo road trip to Indiana last week this song was on repeat.
As I noted in my update post, I saw Marina live a few days ago and was blown away by how amazing she was live. Happy is one of my favorite songs on her new album ‘Froot’ because it has such beautiful lyrics. Here’s a snippet:
…I sang a hymn to bring me peace And then it came, a melody It felt so sweet, it felt so strong It made me feel like I belonged And all the sadness inside me Melted away like I was free
I found what I’d been looking for in myself Found a life worth living for someone else Never thought that I could be, I could be Happy, happy
20syl is someone I just started listening to near the end of May. Ongoing Thing is my current favorite of his, but he has other awesome tracks that have super cool music videos (for example, Kodamaand Back & Forth).
Me And You is a classic Nero single that I forgot about for a little bit, but came across it again when going through my old workout playlist. If you like drum & bass, I’m sure you’ll love Nero just as much as I do.
Savages is another example of awesome lyrics by Marina where she looks at this world critically:
Another day, another tale of rape Another ticking bomb to bury deep and detonate I’m not the only one who finds it hard to understand I’m not afraid of God I’m afraid of Man
You can see it on the news You can watch it on TV You can read it on your phone You can say it’s troubling Humans aren’t gonna behave As we think we always should Yeah, we can be bad as we can be good
All I’m gonna say about Gold is that it’s a groovy af track and has a groovy af music video feat. roller skating goddesses. Does it get any better than that? Click the link connected to this track in the playlist to watch…excuse me while I go buy a pair of knee highs and roller skates.
So I’m sure I’ve mentioned how much I love Lana Del Rey before, and I think I’ve posted Ride and it’s music video on this blog before, but I had to repost it. This music video is one of the reasons I love her so much…watch it from beginning until the very end.
I’m sure hearing Brothers In Arms at the end of this playlist was a big surprise. Well, I had to include it because Mad Max: Fury Road changed the freaking movie game this month. Feminist themes? Badass cars? A beautiful desert landscape? A gorgeous, kick-ass cast? WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LOVE. I’ve already seen the movie twice in theaters and I’ll probably see it again within the next month…I am obsessed and even more convinced of my love for the desert. I might have to do a whole post just dedicated to this movie.
Alright, that’s it for the month of May! Let me know what your favorite tracks are and we shall chat about it.
