Make up Marichat May, Day 12: Sleepover

Title: Good Morning
Word Count: 2,059

“Nope,” Chat Noir admits, trying to keep any disappointment from sneaking into his tone. He’d never slept over at someone’s house before. His father was far too protective to have him do something like that.

“No? They’re fun,” Marinette says nonchalantly.

The Fort

“Wait you’re telling me you’ve never had a sleepover before?” Marinette had been talking about a recent time when Alya had spent the night when Chat admitted he’d never had a sleepover with someone.

He sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. “No, my dad is a little over protective. I didn’t even start going to public school until this year.” He knew there was a slight blush peeking out from below his mask. He was kind of embarrassed that he’d never spent the night at someone else’s house.

“That’s it, you’re staying the night. I’m going to make sure you have the entire sleepover experience, as least how I do it anyway. First, we need a fort, I’ll be right back.” Marinette ran down the stairs, leaving a shell-shocked Chat Noir in her wake.

We never need popular music to let us know when the times are a-changin’, but we can always at least hope that the biggest songs of a period will help to reflect the national mood – and provide comfort, if not outright guidance, to help us get through the tougher parts. That’s the landscape that any new pop song invariably enters when debuting into the post-Brexit, post-Trump, pre-we-can’t-even-imagine world of 2017, and increasingly, it’s starting to sound like it.

The previously bubblegum-smacking Katy Perry set the tone for the year’s heavier, more topical fare in February with the incredulous “Chained to the Rhythm,” which Perry dubbed as the beginning of the “purposeful pop” era. The new epoch has gained steam in April thanks to comeback efforts from One Direction breakout star Harry Styles and pop-punk hitmakers Paramore – two of the most-anticipated singles of 2017, both of which go to great lengths to soundtrack the “Times” at hand.

Harry Styles’ anthemic power ballad “Sign of the Times” takes an optimistic, if largely fatalistic, approach to the state of the universe. Like the Prince title track of the same name from 30 years earlier – which asked “If a night falls and a bomb falls/ Will anybody see the dawn?” – Styles’ “Times” involve a likely imminent apocalypse, with the singer quipping, “Welcome to the final show/ Hope you’re wearing your best clothes” and “They told me that the end is near/ We got to get away from here” over swaying guitars and soaring strings. But Harry prescribes strength in solidarity and a gallows humor in order to push through, assuring “Just stop your crying, it’s the sign of the times.” Dark days, no doubt, but as Styles points out with a falsetto’d mix of frustration and serenity, “We never learn – we’ve been here before.”

Paramore, on other hand, seem to lack the resolve to face what looms on the horizon with such an unwavering gaze, dealing with their own Dusty Rhodes-like travails by yearning for “a hole in the ground/ You can tell me when it’s all right for me to come out.” The “Hard Times” that Paramore acknowledge aren’t the kind you can laugh off with a wry joke about impending doom, or even the kind that rouse you to action and inspire you to protest, but the kind that make you want to check out of 2017 altogether. There’s no guarantee that singer Hayley Williams’ rough patch as described in the song is due to national malaise rather than personal drama, but sentiments like “Hard times/ Gonna make you wonder why you even try” will certainly be familiar to anyone who’s spent an hour on their Twitter timeline this year and felt so overcome by current events that they needed to spend the rest of the day hiding under their bedsheets.

Styles’ and Paramore’s approaches to defining these “Times” may differ greatly, but they serve the same core importance of acknowledging that they’re happening at all. It’s a feeling you might not necessarily get while flipping between Chainsmokers and Migos smashes on your FM dial or Spotify chart. When front-page headlines become so loud and frightening that they invariably trickle down into the other sections of the newspaper as well, it’s important that top 40 not sound completely ignorant of this, and while neither “Sign of the Times” or “Hard Times” is directly topical, both assume a kind of baked-in world-weariness for their listening publics that make them feel inherently timely. In doing so, they might not actively spur anyone to join the movement, exactly, but they’ll let them know – as Styles’ hero David Bowie did in his day – that they’re not alone, in feeling frightened or anxious or simply overwhelmed. And for pop music, that’s the most important role of all.

It’s probably fitting that both Harry Styles’ and Paramore’s upcoming albums will drop on the same day, May 12. The rest of their respective albums may not feel so enormously weighted by their real-world backdrops – though considering Styles told Rolling Stone he wanted to call his LP Sign of the Times, and considering that Paramore actually did title theirs After Laughter, it’s hard to imagine either is marked by rampant frivolity. If the singles are any indications, it may be a valuable cultural marker to have two albums released concurrently that listeners can point to, decades later, to tell future generations, “This is what these times felt like.” - Billboard

Marichat May Day 12:Sleepover

I think I’m projecting too hard on Marinette in this one lol.

Marinette felt like hell. Her head was pounding, her stomach was aching and it put her in a mood close to barfing. Her eyes were starting to get watery because of exhaustion and she could barely keep them open. With a frustrated sigh, she crawled herself up the stairs to her loft. Chat had been with her, busy playing some random otome game on his baton, but when Marinette reached her bed, she saw he was out cold, sleeping peacefully on her bed.

“Wakey, wakey, minou.” she called out, trying not to sound too much like a zombie.

Chat Noir just snored loudly.

She should probably wake him up. Send him home. Yeah, that’s what she was supposed to do. After she lays down. Ah, her pillow was so soft and her bed was so comfortable and Chat purring so relaxing. Right, she should wake him up.

“Soft kitty.” Marinette nuzzled his neck. “Wake kitty.” unconsciously, Chat wrapped and arm around her waist pulling her closer. Marinette’s eyes closed for good this time. “Purr, purr purr” she mumbled.

Just five minutes. She will wake him in five minutes. She will also get up in five minutes. Her eyes just needed a small break. She will be up and about immediately.

Needless to say, the previous sentences were pure bullshit. Marinette was out cold in five seconds flat, cuddling Chat Noir. Meanwhile, two figures appeared in the room and loomed over the bed, beginning to snap pictures. Without the blitz, of course. They were pros.

Tom and Sabine exchanged a knowing look. Honestly, if Marinette wanted to have her superhero secret boyfriend over she could have just asked. She had no subtility when it came to hiding people in her room. But they won’t drop the truth bomb on her. It was better to let Marinette do things in her own rhythm.

“We are saving the pictures for their wedding?”

“Naturally.”

This is for @sybaritismfics!  She’s another talented fellow author, who offered her friendship.  :)

“Marinette, why is Chat Noir climbing in through your window?”

Marinette turned from her screen to look at a very bemused Alya, and then at the black cat who was now sitting frozen in shock on her bed. She should have expected it, really.  As much as they were both at her house, it was a miracle that it hadn’t happened already.  But this was Saturday night, and Chat usually didn’t come on a Saturday unless he had to miss Friday, so having Alya stay over that night should have been safe.  What was he doing here two nights in a row?

“Earth to Marinette?”

She blinked, and realized that Alya was still staring at her expectantly. “Uh, patrolling?” she said intelligently.

Chat’s eyes darted in panic between them.  “Yeah, patrolling!  I was just conducting an in-depth patrol, visiting totally random citizens in their homes, but, um, I can see that there’s no akuma here, so I’ll just, uh, be on my way—”

“Oh, no you don’t!”  Alya leapt up and grabbed his tail, catching him with his torso already half outside.  She coiled the end of it around her fist and tugged, smirking.  “If you don’t stick around, then you’re going to leave poor Marinette to face interrogation alone.”

Chat sighed and dropped back to the bed, pulling the trap door closed behind him.

“Alya!”

“Don’t ‘Alya’ me, M,” she tossed back, making herself comfortable on the chaise.  “You’re the one who’s been secretly meeting with one half of Paris’s super duo.  And don’t even try to tell me this was the first time.  That cat has obviously been here before.”

“Ok, so, maybe he’s been here once or twice before—”

“The cat’s out of the bag now, Princess.”  He dropped to the floor next to where Marinette still sat in her desk chair, and leaned his head against her knee.  “You might as well come clean.  You know the Ladyblogger better than I do, but even I know she’s not gonna quit till she gets her scoop.”

Alya’s eyes had lit at his use of her nickname, and Marinette groaned.  “Now you’ve done it, you mangy cat.”

“ ‘Princess’?  He has a pet name for you?  Girl, how long have you been holding out on me?”

“A while?”  She shrugged.  “I don’t really remember when it started.  And it wasn’t that often at first.”

Alya’s hands twitched on her phone, like she was itching to start recording this like an interview.  “How did it even start?”

“I was out on my balcony one evening, and I saw him vaulting around the rooftops.  I said hi, and he came and sat on my balcony for a while, and…”  She shrugged again, and thoughtlessly dropped her hand onto his head and began to absently scratch his ears.  Chat pushed his head into her hand and closed his eyes happily under her ministrations.

Alya noted both of these things with interest, but didn’t interrupt.

“And I came back,” Chat said without opening his eyes, “because she’s good company.  And she feeds me.”

Alya laughed.  “Marinette, don’t you know better than to feed strays?”

“Well, I do now,” she laughed.

“Hey!”  He lifted his head to glare at her indignantly.

“You know I’m only teasing, Chaton.”  His expression eased, and he put his head against her knee once more.

Alya’s brows climbed up into her hairline, but she still didn’t comment.  “So why didn’t you tell me that you’ve had a superhero visiting your bedroom, Mari?”

“I don’t know,” she shrugged yet again.  “The first time, I thought it was a one-time thing.  And what was I going to say, ‘Chat Noir just happened by my balcony yesterday, and kept me company for a few hours’ ?”

“A few hours?”

“We were bored.”

“Uh huh.”

“Whatever.”  Marinette waved a hand dismissively.  “I just didn’t mention it.  I mean, I told my parents, because I didn’t want them to freak out, but it…just didn’t really occur to me to tell anyone else.”

“I’m glad she didn’t,” Chat put in quietly.  “If it got out that I like to come here, it might put her family in danger.  And if it got out that she’s a friend of mine, it would definitely put her in danger.”

“I guess I can see that.”  Alya nodded thoughtfully.  “So, you guys are just…friends?  What do you do?”

“Whatever, really.  Play Mecha Strike, watch movies, do homework…”

“I help her with her physics.”  Chat grinned.  “And model for her when she needs a muse.”

“With, or without the suit?”

“Alya!”  Marinette just knew that her face was scarlet.

“What?  It’s a valid question.”

Chat laughed, and waggled his brows suggestively.  “With the suit, this time.  But next time?  Who knows.”

She pulled her fingers from his hair, and nudged his head with her knee.  “Ugh, Chat, I think it’s time for you to go.”

“Do I have to?”  He pouted.

“Yes.  Go.  I’ll see you…another time.  Ok?”

“Fine.  A cat knows when he’s not wanted.”  He stood and winked at Marinette with his back to the chaise, so that Alya wouldn’t see.  Then climbed the ladder to Marinette’s loft bed, and pushed open the door in the ceiling.  “See you later, Ladyblogger.  Goodnight, Princess,” he called down, and then he was gone, the door closed quietly behind him.

Alya turned back to Marinette, who was still staring at the skylight with a soft smile.  “Marinette Dupain-Cheng, are you dating Chat Noir?!”

Day 12 - Sleepover

The house was silent except for the quiet scratch of Chat Noir’s claws against the wooden floor. Not hard enough to leave marks just enough to make a sound. His ears twitched looking for sound, trying to figure out where Marinette was.

Marinette had warned him how she was an expert at Hide and Seek when he had brought the idea up when they were trying to find something to do. He was sleeping over and it probably wasn’t smart to play it in a territory she knew. Now he couldn’t find her and may have been a little scared at how well she could hide.

A chair scraped in the kitchen and Chat quickly made his way to the room where he found ‘Bonjour Kitty’ spelled out in Cheerio’s. A little creepy but he assumed that she must be close by because of the sound the chair made.

“Bonjour Kitty” was whispered in his ear before he proceeded to scream.

Marinette looked out at the lightning arcing across the sky and sighed.  Chat was supposed to come by for movies tonight.  His schedule was free now that the Chronologer was no longer at large and everyone was restored to their proper ages.  She’d looked forward to it, not just because she wanted to tease him for being so distracted by her during their earlier surprise visit.

She heard footfalls on the stairs and looked up to see her mother peeking into her room.  "I thought Chat was coming over tonight,“ she said holding out a bowl of popcorn.  "Is the weather too bad?”

Trying to hide her disappointment, Marinette nodded.  "I… don’t think it’s safe for him to run around on roof tops in the rain.  It’s probably slippery.“  There was another flash of lightning.  "And I don’t think I want him getting hit by lightning.”

“I suppose that’s true,” her mother agreed, crossing the room to wrap one arm around her shoulders, sliding the bowl onto the desk.  "And it’s better to have him safe at home than…"

Marinette shook her head.

“You don’t want him safe?” her mother asked, uncertainty coloring her voice.

“Of course I want him safe,” Marinette said with a snort.  "But his home life… it’s not healthy, Maman.  And I know that if he’s home right now, he’s all alone, in a big emotionally cold house, with no one who cares about him.“
