How OW Characters Be Like as College Roommates

Mercy:

  • So sweet and easily likeable.
  • Very clean but she has a huge stack of medical books on her desk built like a fortress.
  • Always fretting over her roommate to make sure they are taking care of themselves, exercising, eating healthy, sleeping at a decent hour (honestly when you are in college wtf is sleep)
  • Always a great study buddy during exams or needs general advice

Symmetra: 

  • The room has to be clean and follow a specific aesthetic on both sides of the room or else it will drive her crazy.
  • Cleans and moves items around every day so the space looks “presentable”
  • Generally very quiet and distant but it doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to be your friend. She just isn’t the best at socialising at times. 
  • Loves having cute small plants in the room to give it some…life, haha.

Tracer:

  • Very energetic roommate who insists on spontaneous outings whether that is going to McDonald’s at midnight or going to one of Lucio’s parties
  • Pretty clean room overall but she often leaves her hoodies scattered all the place. Girl can’t stay committed to one jacket in a single day.
  • Instantly become BFF’s with this gal as she is very open and LOVES to talk about dating or gossiping. 
  • Insists that every Friday you and she go out to have a girls night. It could be anything that the two of you like whether that be shopping, watching a movie, getting a pedicure, a n y t h i n g.

D.Va:

  • So. Many. Bloody. Posters. All colourful of her favourite video games and K-Pop stars.
  • She is very cool as a roommate but beware you will have to stay up late every night when D.Va streams and is playing video games. So noise may be a problem.
  • Has a terrific fashion sense and will always hook you up with a cute outfit depending on the occasion (she will dress you up for a party or a date, no matter what)
  • She isn’t the one to go to for studying as she is the master at procrastinating. Somehow she does everything last minute and gets decent grades.

Zarya:

  • You barely see her that much in residence or on campus since she is either working out or practising with her competitive team.
  • Kinda like a big sister figure who is totally down to crushing some guys who were being dicks.
  • Because she isn’t around much, the room is relatively clean and barely do you have to remind her to do her part of the cleaning. She always takes her vows seriously.
  • The closet space is full of Zarya’s weights, sports balls, and other equipment. 

Mei:

  • Pretty shy and has the cutest smile. Like you want to engulf her in a hug upon meeting her and omg you were so lucky to have her as your roomie.
  • She is always so positive and an early riser. While you might feel a bit dead inside this girl has brought you a cup of coffee to see if it will give you that wake-up call. 
  • A great study buddy when needed. She knows everything about geography and various sciences. This girl always gets straight A’s in everything she does.
  • Loves buying you cute small gifts when you are stressed. Bless her soul <3

Sombra:

  • Has so much tech in the room that it looks like a hacking centre rather than a bedroom. 
  • While she might look a bit shady she is pretty darn cool and will be brutally honest with you. 
  • Always has some random person in the room. Often times she is helping them get back at another person for their douche behaviour. Sombra is like the avenger for all broken hearts.
  • Does this girl get any sleep? Or leave the room? Whenever you get back from a class, Sombra is always seated at her desk doing god knows what. When you remark on her hermit skills she just laughs and says, “You don’t even know half of what I do sweetheart.”

Jack Morrison:

  • Really clean, simple, minimalistic look space.
  • A polite and honest guy overall. He isn’t really into parties but isn’t a hardcore introvert who stays in his room all day.
  • Always willing to help and always knows when something is on your mind. He just sits in his seat and watches you carefully before speaking if you are alright.
  • That guy who will always invite you to go to the dining hall with. He just wants you to feel comfortable and included <3

Gabriel Reyes: 

  • Like Jack, his room is pretty average and simple but carries his go to basketball, small weights, jump rope, 
  • I swear this man have so many pairs of sweatpants. That’s all he really wears so the laundry basket is always full of his dirty sweatpants.
  • Really chill and can be such a tease and a pain. But if you are stressed or pissed about something this guy will insist you two go out to town or exercise that toxic out of your system. 
  • Did I say that he gives great advice and is the perfect wingman? This guy knows how to make chicks soon and he always has a guest over.

Genji:

  • So much anime posters and one inspirational quote is plastered on the door. Despite his weebness he is really cool and inspirational to others!
  • The room always feels so clean and calm. Genji always makes sure that a nice scent of peppermint is circulating in the air. 
  • Wakes up very early in the morning and is so quiet about it. Like if you had a busy night he will make sure the next morning that he is extra careful to not wake you up.
  • Will unexpectedly bring you a cup of tea every day. The flavours vary and it is always exciting to see what he brings the next day. 

Lucio:

  • Dude’s got cool lights attached around the ceiling and glow a faint light that isn’t too harsh for the eyes.
  • So excited and hyper to be here! Honestly, this sweet guy is asking all kinds of question such as where you from, your name, what program you are in etc.
  • Encourages you to go to parties. He is little too great at persuading you to join him. But the night always ends on a good note so who cares.
  • Always asks for your opinion on his demos. If you don’t like it, he will work on it again until you are satisfied with it. Seems like you got a good music taste. 

McCree:

  • The room is like military clean on the first week but afterward it is pretty messy, with McCree’s shirts and pants littered all over the floor that didn’t quite make it to the full basket and more dirty clothes.
  • If you need a friend to binge watch a tv show or movie series, this guy is so down with it. He likes to just sit back, share a case of beer and have fun.
  • He snores very loudly at exactly 4 AM and it drives you crazy. The cowboy on rare nights does have bad nightmares and when you wake him up to ask if he is okay he will just smile and shrug it off.
  • Probably spends most of the time in the common lounge room as he likes to sit back and talk to anyone who may be around. Literally brings the floor together with his cheesy jokes and natural charms.

Junkrat:

  • The room looks like a bomb went off….oh wait a bomd did just go off!
  • Crazy messy that honestly it is probably best that you burn the room and start all over (don’t give Junkrat any ideas now!)
  • Junkrat is rather wild but when he isn’t doing something dangerous he is just fun to be around. Dude always has the most wicked sense of humour.
  • This guy barely studies but in certain courses he is brilliant. No one on the floor expected this kid to be really smart at something. Don’t be deceived by his wild looks. 

Winston:

  • Looks like a space station. Kidding. But he does have a poster of Albert Einstein. 
  • Has the biggest stash of peanut butter tucked away under his bed that no one knows bout except his roommate.
  • A gentle fellow who always encourages you to reach your potential. He is amazing at teaching and giving very heartwarming lectures about working hard and doing what you love most. 
  • Is the floor representative and all the RA’s in the residence building loves him for his optimistic attitude (plus he doesn’t break the rules…unlike Junkrat).

Masterpost: Sensory differences

If you know a bit about autism, or have been following this blog for some time, you must be aware that one of the autistic traits which has the most consequences on our daily lives is our sensory differences. They have an impact on all spheres of our lives: on what we can and cannot do, on where we can and cannot go, on what we can eat, wear, listen to, on our ways to feel good and on what makes us feel bad.

Such a wide subject definitely warrants a masterpost. So, here we go!

First, let’s take a look at the human sensory system, to understand the different areas in which there can be differences. It’s actually more complicated than the traditional five senses! Our sensory system is divided into three parts:

  • Exteroception : sensing what comes from the environment outside your body.
  • Interoception : sensing the internal physiological condition of your body
  • Proprioception : sensing the position your limbs and body are in

These three main areas encompass different senses (note that this is one model and others exist):

  • Exteroception: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, but also thermoception (sensation of heat/cold) and nociception (sensation of pain)
  • Interoception: nociception (internal pain), feelings of hunger, lack of oxygen, thirst, need to pee, as well as monitoring of the respiratory rate and heart rate.
  • Proprioception: the kinesthetic sense (knowledge of the movement and relative positions of your body parts) and the vestibular sense (knowledge of body movement, direction and acceleration)


For all of these senses, autistic people can have them work typically, be hyposensitive (less sensitive than most people), be hypersensitive (more sensitive than most people) or have sensory processing differences which do not fall under the hypo/hyper system.

The clinical term which encompasses these differences is “Sensory Processing Disorder”. One can have SPD without being autistic, but all or almost all autistic people have SPD.

It should be noted, however, that some autistic people don’t like to think of it as a disorder and prefer simply talking about sensory processing differences.

Something very important to understand is that hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity CAN coexist in any one person’s sensory system. For example, they might be hypersensitive to smell and hyposensitive to touch. They can also be hyper/hypo sensitive to only one aspect of one sense (for instance, pressure or texture or bright lights or sweet tastes). They can also be sometimes hyposensitive to something, and sometimes hypersensitive to it.

Being hypersensitive to a stimulus and being exposed to it can cause what is called “sensory overload”, which usually translates to pain, discomfort, and impaired cognitive functions (in other words, trouble thinking properly). If pushed further (very intense stimuli or very long exposition), it can lead to a shutdown or meltdown.

Being hyposensitive to something and lacking stimulation can translate to restlessness, discomfort, and even pain, as well as an intense craving for the stimuli.


Here are some examples of what hypersensitivity to different senses can translate to, on a behavioral and subjective level:

  • Sight: The person wears sunglasses, maybe even indoors. They avoid places with fluorescent lightning, blinking lightning or too bright lightning. They dislike looking at brightly colored surfaces. They may have trouble with visually cluttered spaces, such as crowds and supermarkets. They may find any kind of flickering or movement around them painful to see.

  • Hearing: They may hear sounds no one else can hear (and some have been tested to hear outside the normal human range). They may have to wear headphones/ear defenders in noisy places. They may avoid crowds and events with lots of people/loud music/shouting. They may have difficulty with the noise of the vacuum, of the construction work on the other side of the street, of the clock ticking in the next room. They may develop tinnitus eventually.

  • Smell: They’ll probably dislike places with strong smells such as perfume shops, farms, or crowded public transportation. They may need to wash themselves, their clothes and their sheet very often to keep body odors to a minimum. They may not tolerate scented soap, shampoo or deodorant (and it’s sometimes difficult to find an unscented one!). They may struggle with the smell of food in general, or with particular smells.

  • Taste: They may be very picky eaters, only tolerating a couple of very bland-tasting food such as mashed potatoes or pasta. They may have difficulty having diverse enough diets with all the nutrients they need. They may always eat the exact same thing.

  • Touch: They may have trouble finding clothing with a texture that they can tolerate. They may need to cut all the tags off their clothing. They may absolutely hate anyone touching them. They may be ok with firm touch, but find light brushy touches painful. They may have trouble wearing specific items of clothing, such as socks/shoes, headphones or hats. They may hate people touching their hair, or find brushing their hair very difficult. They may find brushing their teeth nearly impossible because of the scratching sensation. They may have trouble with the texture of many foods, and be a picky eater because of that.

  • Thermoception: They may be very sensitive to cold, and always wearing loads of clothing and turning the heating up even when other people don’t think it’s that cold. They may be very sensitive to heat, finding summer very hard to cope with, especially if they don’t have access to AC. They may be hyper-aware of tiny changes in temperature, feeling cold when it is dropping and hot when it is rising regardless of the actual temperature.

  • Nociception: They may be more sensitive to pain than most people, and find very painful what most people would shrug off. (They’re not being a drama queen! They really do feel more pain!)

  • Vestibular sense: They may get motion sickness very easily.


And here are some examples for hyposensitivity:

  • Sight: The person may have trouble finding things in visually crowded environments. They may enjoy looking at bright colored lights or at objects in motion (spinning top/twirling fingers…)

  • Hearing: They may not notice being called or being talked to, especially when focused. They may enjoy listening to very loud music, singing, or making lots of noises.

  • Smell: They may not notice smells which other people do. They may enjoy strong smells such as perfume, essential oils or body odor. They may enjoy sniffing a favorite blanket, a significant other, a pet, or anything they like.

  • Taste: They may be able to ingest an impressive amount of spicy food, and may crave strong tasting food (pepper, lemon, salt, sugar…).

  • Touch: They may love rubbing/touching favorite textures, rubbing their hands together… They may love and crave deep pressure, such as having heavy weights on top of them.

  • Thermoception: They may be outside in winter with just a T-shirt, or not be bothered by the heat in summer and even wear a sweater. They may enjoy touching very hot things such as radiators or very hot water, or very cold things like ice cubes or snow.

  • Nociception: They may be less sensitive to pain than most people and not notice it when they’ve been hurt.

  • Vestibular sense: They may love roller coasters, boat rides when there’s a lot of waves… They may never get motion sickness of any sort. They may spend time rocking or like to chill upside down.

  • Kinesthetic sense: They may be very clumsy since they have a poor sense of the position of their body in space. They may stumble a lot and be generally bad at sports. They may have trouble with fine motor skills such as handwriting or sewing. They may enjoy doing repetitive motions such as hand flapping.

  • Interoception: They may have trouble noticing  when they are hungry, thirsty, tired, or when they need to go to the bathroom. They may need to set alarms or to have self-care at set times as part of their routine.


These are of course only examples and hyper or hyposensitivity can express themselves in as many ways are there are people who experience them.

Here are some examples of other sensory differences autistic people can experience:

  • Synesthesia seems more frequent among autistic people than in the general population. It is defined as a transfer from one sensory modality to another: for example, seeing sounds or hearing tastes. It can also mean associating colors or personalities to numbers/letters. In autistic people specifically, it can be a very positive thing (you can now stim with two senses at the same time!) or something painful (these bright lights are awful, well now they’re harsh noises too).

  • We often struggle with processing sensory information, especially speech, which can mean we can have a lot of trouble understanding what people say, might take a lot of time to process speech (which results in conversations such as” “Hey, will you get me this thing please?” “What?” “I said, will-” “Oh yeah, sure”), and might need subtitles to be able to understand movies. Processing information from two different senses at a time can also be difficult, which often translates as “I can either look at the images or understand what’s being said”. This is one of the causes of our struggle with eye contact.

“What took you so long?”

Those were the words you uttered just as your best friend, and probably the longest companion you have ever had, sat down beside you like he usually did in Potions. You noticed that his eyebrows were furrowed and he wore the scowl he had whenever he saw Potter — which you assumed was the reason why his features were all annoyed, since Harry was in the very same class right now.

Draco took out his textbook, “What took me so long? You’re the one who didn’t wait for me when I clearly told you that we’d meet at the entrance of the Great Hall before going here.”

A blush crept on your cheeks, clearly remembering that he indeed told you that before the two of you parted ways this morning after breakfast. Draco was looking at you with a disapproving look and all you managed to do was sheepishly smile at him, which made him roll his eyes.

“I’m sorry.” you whispered just as Professor Slughorn began his discussion about a potion that was called Amortentia. “I completely forgotten it because Ron had a question and —”

“Wait a minute. Why on earth are you on first name basis with that Weasel?” Draco hastily cut you off, turning his body so that he faced you while you still tried to listen to Slughorn’s boring introduction.

You glanced at him. “Because unlike you, I’m not a git, Draco.” you couldn’t help but plaster a smirk on your lips, making him scoff.

But truth be told, only you could insult Draco face to face and get away with it. You have been friends with him since you stepped foot on the Hogwarts Express, the compartment that he was occupying that time the only available place you could find to stay in. It still surprises you whenever you remember it because you were always under the impression that he was just as egotistical and snobbish as his father.

Well, he kind of still was, but whenever it came to you he wasn’t as bad as everybody claimed him to be. Draco was actually a very trust worthy friend, he was definitely someone you knew who could stay and tolerate your flaws and imperfections, and he has always been there for you in times of distress.

Of course, Draco undoubtedly felt the same, or else the friendship you had with him wouldn’t have lasted this long.

“Yes, now, well huddle up and divide yourselves into pairs.” said Slughorn with a peculiar smile on his face. “I’ll be giving each group a sample of Amortentia and you’ll have to be completely honest to your chosen partner what are the things that you smelled, alright? Okay, so, quietly fall in line …”

You shared a look with Draco and he nodded, standing up to get the mentioned sample from the professor for your own group. He was back in seconds, placing a tiny bottle on your working table containing a liquid that had steam rising in characteristic spirals. You leaned down closely to get a sniff, your nose wrinkling before turning to Draco.

“Seriously, Draco. How much cologne did you spray on yourself? I can’t smell anything besides it.” you tried sniffing again.

He pursed his lips together. “What do you mean? If there’s anyone overdoing something, it’s you. Your watermelon scented perfume is going to be stuck in my nostrils forever.” he chuckled.

Both confused by your own accusations to each other — since quite frankly, you didn’t bother to put on your perfume today and Draco had forgotten to apply his cologne — you and Draco leaned down once again to the bottle of Amortentia, determined to get a different scent other than the previous strong fragrance.

Draco glanced at you while you were still sniffing, casually moving closer so that he could familiarize himself again with the smell of your shampoo. He was still taking in the smell of watermelon from the potion, with two new additions: old books and now, your shampoo.

“What is it?” you questioned when he abruptly almost fell on his stool because of what he was beginning to discover.

“Nothing.” coughed Draco, changing the topic. “Er, what did you smell?”

You remembered the scent of fallen rain, the smell of mint, and the strangest of all, his cologne. You thought you were only catching the smell of it because of how close the two of you were sitting right next to each other. Clearly, you were mistaken and found yourself blushing at the realization that you were attracted to your best friend.

“You go first.” you insisted but Draco shook his head.

“No, no, ladies first.”

You snorted, “Please, Draco, we both know you hardly recognize me as a lady.”

“Girls first then.” he corrected himself.

“No, really, you go first.”

“Y/N, don’t be stubborn and just tell me —”

“Yes, I would, right after you tell me yours —”

“Oh, for Merlin’s sake, Y/N — ”

“Mr Malfoy and Miss Y/L/N, do we have a problem?” Slughorn had appeared in front of your desk, a triumph smile on his face. “I can’t help but notice that your voices have increased in volume. May I know what’s the noise all about?”

“Nothing, professor.” both of you claimed.

Slughorn narrowed his eyes ever so slightly.

“We were just about to exchange answers, sir.” you added.

He grinned. “Is that so? Well, tell them to the whole class then! I’m sure everyone is just as curious as I am.”

Draco’s eyes went wide as saucers. “Actually, sir, I rather not —”

“Ridiculous, Malfoy! Now, come on, tell us what you smelled.”

You have never seen Draco act so uncomfortable and embarrassed before as he stared at Slughorn, his cheeks tinted pink while he held this look as if he was silently praying that the time was up and they were now going to be dismissed for their next class.

He coughed. “I smell … old books, uh, watermelon, and … kind of like a bubblegum scent.” he murmured the last part, knowing that you were the only one that had hair smelling like bubblegum around the castle grounds.

“And how about you, Miss Y/L/N?”

“Fallen rain, mint, I think. And, well,” you caught Draco waiting for your answer, “um, some type of cologne.”

“Ah! How astonishing. I wonder who would be the lucky person to be wearing such a cologne …” trailed the professor, finally leaving his attention to the two of you and back to his own desk in front.

You and Draco were both silent on your seats, knowing in fact that you had smelled each other in Amortentia — a love potions that gave off a scent that you are most attracted to. In both of your cases, only now did the both of you realize that maybe all this time you’ve been with each other, the affection you showed weren’t precisely platonic as thought it was.

“So,” Draco was the one who had the nerves to speak after understanding, “it was my cologne, huh?” there was a hint of cockiness in his tone and when you peered at him, he had this genuine grin that only you had the chance to see.

“Excuse me, Malfoy, but two beats one. You smelled both my perfume and my shampoo.” you said a matter-of-fact.

You gazed at each other for what seemed like hours before breaking apart, your lips curled up in a smirk while the professor now discussed another potion, Felix felicis.

Suddenly, Draco placed a hand on top of yours nonchalantly, intertwining it with his as a bigger smile appeared on his mouth. He seemed to be very pleased of himself and you rolled your eyes, ignoring the heavy pace of your heart, knowing that this was going to be the beginning of something new and wonderful.

Have you ever noticed the parallel between playing a bad game of overwatch and the more tragic points in human history?

It goes like this:

  • Are there problems? [ bad economy, corruption, losing the match ]
  • Find someone to blame [ Jews, POC, socialists, Hanzo ]
  • Shame them, kick them out, kill them 
  • Repeat

Funny thing is, people still do it, even though it never makes the problems go away. So why do we do it?

Because it feels good. And it’s easy.

Because it takes strength to say ‘Maybe I could have done better.’ 

‘Maybe I’m not the best.’

Things NOT To Do When Studying

I was going through some old papers from freshman year and I was thinking about what I was doing wrong when I didn’t achieve the grades I wanted, even though I got As in my classes. What things could I have done better to get a 100 instead of a 96? I don’t ask myself this so much as to be a perfectionist (even though I am one). I ask myself these questions because: 1) I must not have had a completely solid understanding of the material if I couldn’t get a 100 on it. 2) Maybe my less-than-stellar test-taking skills got in the way. 3) I’m a tutor, so I want to be sure I understand everything thoroughly enough to help others with the material.

General:

  • Don’t simply read over your notes to study. It doesn’t work. You might pick up pieces here and there or even memorize certain things verbatim, but reading something 20 times is very inefficient. Your brain learns by making connections, so if you’re only straight reading the material you’re not making extra connections. You’re much better off going through your notes to make your own questions and quizzing yourself on them, marking down connections as you read (either in the margin or by literally connecting them in the text with a pen), or creating a study sheet (whether in text format or a mind map).
  • Don’t simply highlight, either. While there is a proper way to highlight, most people I see using a highlighter are doing it wrong. If you’re the person who highlights 90% of the paragraph, I’m talking about you. Okay, so highlighting is physically more active than glancing over your notes 20 times, but it’s about equally as effective if you’re highlighting everything. I recommend instead highlighting (or marking with eraseable pencil) things you want to go back to later. But, again, highlighting and reading alone is not useful. Go back to your highlighted parts to reread something that was hard to understand the first time, a topic you want to revisit to make a review sheet, etc. Whatever you use it for, make sure the purpose is to quickly find information later, not simply so you can read those things again. Try making a study sheet, in your own words, based off of your highlighting.
  • Don’t forget to write things down. And I don’t mean just in your planner when you have homework or papers due. This isn’t so much about getting absolutely everything down in terms of notes, either, I have a separate post regarding that. But in class you should always write down questions you have and the answer.  If you don’t get a chance to ask during class, ask ASAP whether it’s directly to your teacher or asking a classmate. If it’s that important, do some research on it, too. Also, make sure you write down information on due dates or paper topics. You probably already do that, but I would recommend having a piece of paper with you every day where you can write anything important down like dates and to-dos to organize all in one shot. If you simply write down “paper due” in a block in your planner before rushing to the next you may not see that reminder until close to the due date. I like to take all of the information on the piece of paper (which also has my day planned out and a to-do list) right when I get up in the morning so I’m prepared for the day and don’t forget anything.

What I Did Wrong:

  • Don’t take it easy at the start of the semester. To be perfectly honest, I’ve pretty much always done that, but my freshman year of college it wasn’t a huge deal since I pretty much already took those classes. Sophomore year, however, everything was new, so memorization and understanding didn’t come quite as easily. The harder your classes are, the more essential this is, especially if you actually want to sleep during finals week. The best thing you can do is start doing work before the semester even starts if you have a syllabus handy, or even just looking through your books to see what’s ahead. While everyone else is doing fun things the night of that first day, make sure you get some work done first before you have your fun. This sets the tone for the rest of the semester and gets you into the habit of working. Don’t let yourself get behind! It’s easier to stay ahead than it is to struggle catching up.
  • Don’t leave your notes to rot after class. Meaning, do something with them right after class! … or at least ASAP. Mark them up, edit them, rework them, copy or type them (if your handwriting sucks like me), or, best of all, write a short summary. Take the several pages of notes you have and condense them into one or two paragraphs. Don’t worry about the details, just make sure you’re hitting on the key points. As a bonus, you can type up some questions based off of your notes to save for later studying (details are allowed here). Everything will be fresh, making this a much easier process than if you did it right before the test. At the end of the week, make a summary of your summaries and quiz yourself on the questions you made. You’ll probably want to use those questions again, so try to reword them or even combine them into bigger questions that cover many topics. That way you’re being active with the material and will actually understand what you’re answering as opposed to parroting.
  • Don’t make study sheets by copying off of something else. Yes, I made this mistake. I wasn’t copying initially, but rather, using a review book as a reference to make study sheets. However, the more I was pressed for time the less I started putting things into my own words. Now, this wasn’t a big deal in terms of legality, since I kept them to myself, but it didn’t turn out to be all that helpful in the end. If you want to make study sheets, you could either take concepts you’ve been learning and put them together in different ways or make a summary in your own words. I recommend both, but whatever you do, make sure you’re actually creating something new or else you’re not going to remember it. For example, in organic chemistry I took the reactions and grouped them in different ways (by subtstrate, reactants, products, etc.) as a reference while studying. The act of sorting and looking through the reactions in order to make the sheets helped me remember them, then I had the sheets to look at while doing practice to help me memorize them further.
  • Don’t save the bulk of lab work for after the lab and don’t wait to write your report. By this I’m referring to the post-lab report. Spend the extra time while prepping your pre-lab materials to start your report! You’re expected to know the theory behind your labs before you perform them, so writing the introduction to your report should not be a problem. If it is, then you’ll be glad you took the time to understand the lab before you tried actually doing it. By doing this you may also find that you have questions that can be answered by the professor before you get confused in the middle of a procedure. Also make sure you have data tables prepared (not just in your notebook, but in the report file to fill in after) and anything else you’ll need to take down data. Once the lab is finished do the report immediately. Everything you did will be fresh and you’ll be glad you finished it well ahead of the deadline. At this point you can show your lab to your professor and get any corrections fixed so you’re ashooin’ for an A!
  • Don’t try to write a paper in one shot. I understand if you feel like your papers flow better if you do it all in one shot, but at least make sure you plan it out thoroughly ahead of time before you actually write it all out. But even then, you will likely benefit from splitting your paper into chunks to tackle one day at a time. If you have a research paper that’s double-digit pages then you’ll be forced to do that anyway, but be sure you’re splitting up the work for small papers, as well. It may not seem like a big deal to do a short paper in one day, but if you end up having other assignments or tests due around the same time it might up your stress if you’re crunched for time trying to finish that “insignificant” paper while juggling a few other assignments as well as some test prep.

Advice Suggested By Others:

  • Don’t listen to distracting music while studying. To some degree, the types of music that are considered “distracting” vary when it comes to the subject you’re studying and personal preference. However, the general rule of thumb is that you avoid any sort of music with lyrics if you’re studying a subject that involves language. Art, math, and certain sciences are an exception if you’re working with pictures or numbers, since language usually doesn’t interfere with those things in the brain. But if you’re reading anything, even if it’s worded directions to a math or science problem, lyrics will probably be distracting. Some people suggest that listening to new music with lyrics is okay because you won’t be tempted to sing along with something you don’t know while others get distracted by hearing any type of language. Again, it’s truly up to you, but genres such as classical, jazz, and nature sounds are usually recommended. Heck, if you’re a musician and get distracted by any type of music, silence or brown noise may be the better option for you. (Suggested by aslongasitsfiction)
  • Don’t study in bed. Scientific studies have shown that doing anything in your bed that isn’t sleep or sex-related affects your ability to fall asleep in your bed. When your brain primarily associates your bed with sleep, it’s much easier to fall asleep. But having trouble sleeping in your bed isn’t the only part of the problem. While studying in your bed is really comfy, you’re also more likely to fall asleep if the association with sleep is strong enough. It’s generally recommended that you don’t even study in the same room as your bed, but as college students this may not be possible if you want to use your desk. So if you don’t want to make the trek out to a more secluded study space, at least try to make sure your desk doesn’t have your bed in view. Because let’s be honest, if you’re exhausted, simply seeing your bed might be enough to make you nod off. (Suggested by rare-footage and ane-mia)
  • Don’t go on tumblr. Okay, this may seem obvious, but sometimes a reminder is all you need to get off your computer! I suppose it’s better that you’re looking up information to help you study, but I think we both know what the better choice would be. (Suggested by oneofakindgizibe)
  • Don’t study in a place you can’t focus just because your friends are there. Us humans are social animals. We like being around other people. But this can cause you problems if you’re trying to study. Unless you’re in a productive study group, make sure you separate study time and social time. You’re probably more likely to gravitate towards fun, social things over studying, so make sure studying is a priority and you get it done before seeing your friends. If you have a roommate or two, then your dorm room is probably not the right place to study. Find a few of your focus hotspots and go there for your study time. (Suggested by fitspoforever)
  • Don’t forget the little things you know you’ll need. This includes but is not limited to things such as chargers, books, snacks, and water. You don’t want to be in-the-zone and all of the sudden realize you need to run back to your dorm room to get a book. And then 10 minutes later realize you’re hungry and need to run to the cafeteria. If you don’t already have certain things that are always in your bag, simply keep a list of things you generally need to bring with you, leave it as a reminder on your desk, and check it over before you hit the library.   • Don’t take naps while studying without setting an alarm. Or even better, avoid naps all together. If you’re like me, 15-minute naps usually turn into 2-hour events. But regardless, if you need to get some extra sleep, get the extra sleep. It’s better to take a nap when you know you need it as opposed to falling asleep on your desk unexpectedly when you have a paper you need to get done for the next day. 15-20 minutes the recommended time for a short nap, but if you need something more robust, try for 90 minutes or use sleepyti.me to figure out the right time to wake up.   • Don’t wear uncomfortable clothes. I personally find that “dressing for success” works really well for going to lectures and virtually everything else, but terribly if you’re hitting the library for a long study session. You’ll probably wanna look cute if you’re heading somewhere public, but just make sure you’re comfortable. Yoga pants are fine for the occasion! (Suggested by fitspoforever)
Korok Lost Item Spell

A spell to find a lost item with the help of a Korok.

What you need:
- a seed, acorn, or small stone
- a bay leaf (a regular leaf works too)
- a small offering, like a piece of fruit
- a marker
- a small piece of twine or string

Write the name of the lost item on the leaf (ex: car keys, glasses). Take the seed, acorn or stone in your hand and imagine a Korok popping out, then say:

Little Korok, little Korok!
I have found your hiding place!
Have this little snack,
And with a little chime or clack,
Please help me get my item back!

Wrap the seed/acorn/stone in the leaf, and tie it closed with the twine or string. Leave it in the space you’re searching with the offering. When you get near where your lost item is, you may hear a little noise or notice something out of place. Look there for your item!
