More than a natural disaster: How Harvey and Irma put health care, immigrant communities, the environment, and more at risk

In the past few weeks, severe storms including Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc across the southwest U.S., Mexico, and island territories including the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. Dozens of people perished, and many more were displaced from their homes. Some people’s lives will never be the same again.

The truth is that horrifying storms like Harvey and Irma — as well as the earthquake that shook Mexico — reveal the intersections of how natural disasters can impact access to health care, the environment, immigrant communities and folks with low incomes. Here’s how these crises are affecting real people, right now.

Natural disasters = heightened fear for undocumented communities

Donald Trump’s xenophobic plan to end DACA makes Hurricane Harvey even more dangerous for some folks. In Houston, the city with the third largest population of undocumented immigrants, Harvey forced many DACA recipients and mixed-status families to face difficult choices. Already anxious over Trump’s threats of deportation, undocumented people may be even more reluctant to seek out shelter and health care in Harvey’s wake, for fear of being turned away at shelters or facing hostile ICE agents.

The most vulnerable people at risk

Natural disasters affect people with low incomes the most. In Texas and Florida, folks with low incomes are more likely to live in flood-prone areas with deficient infrastructure. This means that evacuating and traveling to get medical assistance is much harder — especially for low-income people with disabilities. There’s an assumption that everyone can and should evacuate when natural disasters happen, but that’s not always possible for everyone. Not everyone can get time off of work, access resources to relocate their family, or find a place to stay.

And in Houston, many families with low incomes live near the city’s oil refineries and petrochemical plants — putting them at risk of contamination, leaks, explosions, and other hazards.

A threat against women’s health

We also can’t forget the danger that natural disasters pose for women. Because of the devastation brought on by Harvey and Irma, women looking for preventive or maternal care and women who need abortions might be blocked from getting help. What’s more, these women could be forced to travel in sometimes dangerous conditions to access the care they need, if they can at all.

In addition, Texas lawmakers have passed medically unnecessary restrictions that have led to health centers closing, jeopardizing women’s health even further. In parts of Texas, some abortion providers offered free safe, legal abortion for survivors of Harvey. But elsewhere, a lot of women don’t have this option.

And it gets worse

Folks with chronic conditions — such as diabetes, endometriosis, or chronic kidney disease — are also at risk. During evacuation, their medications can get lost or destroyed. With dialysis centers, pharmacies, and hospitals closed, there are fewer places for people to get care.

The environment suffers, too

Houston is home to America’s petroleum industry. Significant amounts of flooding spell disaster for those living near chemical factories — and the environment.

With dozens of chemical plants flooding and shutting down due to Harvey, more than one million pounds of toxic pollutants have been released into the air. A flooded factory outside of Houston burst into flames twice, leaking toxic chemicals and sending 15 people to the hospital.

And drinking water — which may have come in contact with sewage systems and contaminated with bacteria like E. coli  — is unsafe to drink in some areas of Houston and Florida. Having safe, healthy environments and clean water is a basic human right, as well as an issue of reproductive rights. Mothers, for example, need clean water to prepare infant formula or to breastfeed their babies.

We stand in solidarity with those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma

The impact of these natural disasters is personal. Planned Parenthood is an essential health care provider in many of the communities hit hard by these disasters. Several organizations are coming to the aid of those affected by Harvey and Irma. Here’s how you can help:

Texas

Hit by: Hurricane Harvey

Help NOW:

  • Volunteer with Planned Parenthood supporters in relief efforts. Already, more than 150 Planned Parenthood supporters assembled 4,000 period kits for Harvey victims in Houston.

Mexico

Hit by: Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Katia, earthquake

Help NOW:

Florida

Hit by: Hurricane Irma

Help NOW:

  • Volunteer with Planned Parenthood and other coalition partners to help communities that are most vulnerable. Volunteer Anna Eskamani says, “I volunteered with this effort last night to pass out free food, and the Friday before Irma made landfall, I also volunteered with a homeless outreach group to let the homeless know of their shelter options.”
  • Chip in to the Irma Community Recovery Fund to stand with folks in Florida.

U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean

Harry Styles Charms Grammy Museum Crowd, Is a Nomination Next?

Ahead of a Sept. 20 show at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre, Harry Styles took the stage at downtown L.A.’s Grammy Museum on Friday night (Sept. 15) for a Q&A conducted by writer and filmmaker Cameron Crowe. Styles, who released his self-titled debut in May, was joined by producer Jeff Bhasker for a lively, often laugh-out-loud discussion of how the album came together, Styles’ experience filming “Dunkirk” (“I was in the water way more than the movie suggests,” Styles cracked), and his views on the music industry.

And while the Grammy Awards weren’t mentioned specifically, the venue — as well as the presence of longtime Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich in the crowd — certainly brought to mind the possibility of a future nomination for what is arguably one of the strongest albums of the year. An understated post-interview performance of Styles’ gorgeous second single, “Two Ghosts,” featuring Bhasker on keyboards, drove the point home.

The story of how the music came together — written and recorded in a remote studio complex in Jamaica — has been told by this point, but Crowe dug deeper into the process, letting Styles and Bhasker expound on just how organic and, in the producer’s words, “authentic and viscerally honest” the project ended up being.

At the same time, said Styles, “it was the most fun I’ve ever had.” Partly because he started on the album without a label commitment (Styles would later sign to Columbia, home to One Direction), he felt unencumbered. “When we started the process, it didn’t feel like I was making any sort of commitment,” said Styles. “I didn’t feel any pressure.”

That freedom allowed songs like “Sign of the Times” to flow out of Styles, even as other tracks were still coming together. Bhasker described a moment in which Styles sat at the piano almost in a trance, coming up with the chord progression to what turned out to be his first single. “It was writing from this place of, ‘Let’s get an idea going, do something with it, and have fun,‘” said Bhasker. “And in 5 or 6 days, they had, like, 10 songs. … It was that immediate.”

Styles’ favorite track on the album is “From the Dining Table,” which he said is, “The one that makes me feel the most,” adding that, “it’s the most different than what I expected myself to write and it’s probably the most honest that I’ve been in a song as well.”

The album’s stylistic choices — what some deem as musical nods to classic rock acts like David Bowie and Pink Floyd — were also illuminated, with Styles explaining that his father listened to “a lot of Queen and Pink Floyd,” while his mother favored Norah Jones and Shania Twain. “I’m a huge Shania Twain fan,” said Styles (he later played a snippet of a Twain song on a kazoo, by request from an audience member).

Bhasker’s take is that if any “homage” is sensed, it was not intentional, though the record they ended up with was destined to sound the way it did. “We were not thinking about [influences] at all,” he said, noting that, in this era of ProTools and pop co-writes, “It couldn’t be more punk rock” to record an album the way those classic rock acts did.

Indeed, the sort of liberties Styles was afforded new artists rarely see, and for that, the singer credits the record company, run at the time of his signing by executive Rob Stringer, who has since ascended to CEO of Sony Music Entertainment. Said Styles: “We had signed with Columbia and I called Rob one day saying, ‘Hey, would you mind leaving me a alone for six months and I’ll call you when [the album is] finished?’ He said, ‘I want hear it when you’re excited to play it for me.’ … A lot of people get into this thing of, ‘It’s me versus the record label,’ and I feel so lucky to get to work with everyone at Columbia. The support from them allowed us to go do what we want, so I have to say thanks to them for letting it happen this way.”

Not to let the mood get too serious, though, Styles then encouraged all in attendance, which included journalists, television executives, and Grammy chapter members, to come to the Greek on Wednesday and experience these songs, the band, and the vibe, for themselves. “You’re all on the list,” Bhasker joked. Added Styles: “If anyone wants to come, Capitol Records said they would cover the cost.” Charge it to Niall Horan’s recoupable account?

Watch Harry Styles' Evocative Take on Little Big Town's 'Girl Crush'
Watch Harry Styles sing Little Big Town's "Girl Crush."

Harry Styles breezed into Nashville for a date on his recently launched solo tour Monday night, telling the Ryman Auditorium crowd – populated mostly by girls and young women in full singing (and screaming) voice, “I have to say, when we booked this tour, this was kind of the reason. This room. And it is beautiful, and you look fabulous, so thank you.”

The British pop star, who came to prominence as a member of boy band One Direction, has shown genuine affection for country music, with his tastes running the gamut from Shania Twain to Keith Whitley. While his set included all 10 tunes from his self-titled solo debut, released in May, Styles also gave an affectionate and well-received nod to one of the biggest Nashville-based hits of the past several years: Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” calling it “one of my favorite songs recently that’s come out of this place.”

Strumming acoustic guitar at the outset of the sultry Grammy-winning tune, penned by Lori McKenna, Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose, the 23-year-old was joined by an auditorium of backup singers who cheered wildly as soon as they recognized the song. Kicking it off at a lower octave, Styles’ voice was soon soaring in much the same way Little Big Town singer Karen Fairchild’s does on the hit version, featured on the quartet’s Pain Killer LP.

Common to both Styles and Little Big Town is their devotion to classic rock icons Fleetwood Mac, which the former showed in his blistering cover of Linsdey Buckingham’s “The Chain.” Because signs and flags are not allowed to be displayed among the Ryman audience, during the encore of “Sign of the Times,” Styles’ first solo hit, he draped a rainbow-striped pride flag on the microphone stand, saying, “I heard these were taken away so I want to put it in its rightful place.”

California country singer Cam opened for Styles, delivering songs off her debut album Untamed. Styles will return to Nashville on June 12th, with Kacey Musgraves in support.

Concert Review: Harry Styles’ New Direction Receives Warm L.A. Welcome at the Greek

Styles is quickly finding his footing, going from boy-band ensemble player to rock star in a pop world, even if he waited well into the set to get his full Jagger on.

With the classic-rock-steeped solo debut he released three months ago, Harry Styles claimed rights to making the dad-rock album of the year. At least in theory, anyway. That potential audience of older dudes who share his newly revealed affection for 1970s Americana and ‘90s Brit-rock may still not have gotten the memo that they’d probably like his self-titled album even better than One Direction fans. They’re certainly not the types to have signed up in advance for Ticketmaster’s “Verified Fan” program so they could sell out his fall tour within seconds.

And so it came to be that Styles performed at L.A.’s Greek Theatre Wednesday night for an audience that was (by conservative estimates) 97 percent female, 95 percent 17-to-25, and 120 percent ear-piercingly shrieky. Narrowcasting doesn’t get any louder, so he can probably live with putting off the demographic expansion just a little longer.

The Greek is the second of 13 “intimate” venues he’s playing at this month and next — Radio City Music Hall being a similarly cozy stopover Sept. 28 — before ramping up to arenas like the Forum and Madison Square Garden next summer. (Also already all sold out months ago; sorry, again, we’re sure, late-blooming dude fans.) He already did a gig some time ago at the Troubadour, so he’s smart enough to know that it looks better to look like you’re working your way up, even if your natural habitat before going solo was stadiums, and could well be again before a world tour finds its final leg.

The more modest touring start may not all be for appearance’s sake, though. Styles may also know that reinventing his performing style as a lone frontman is something that won’t be completely mastered in a gig or two. At the Greek, you could sense Styles still sussing out exactly how to make the transition from boy-band ensemble player to rock star — not that, being the most debonair twentysomething in the western hemisphere, he’s ever going to let you see him sweat it.

He’s well on his way to having it down. There’s a lot of savvy to the way Styles has structured his relatively brisk 80-minute set. As the show began with some of the new album’s least ostentatious numbers, like “Ever Since New York” and the acoustically inclined “Two Ghosts,” Styles was nearly board-stiff as a frontman. You might have thought: Is this his rockist way of doing atonement for all those years of two-dimensional 1D video frolic? Even a revival of One Direction’s “Stockholm Syndrome” early in the set had him playing it reserved.

But when the glam-rockiness of “Only Angel” kicked in just shy of the halfway point, Styles traded in the Tim Buckley part of his neo-retro persona to start getting his Jagger on a little more, even giving the girls a frisky wag of the tongue. In a show that’s still this short, it was smart to start with a slow folkie burn and work up to a cocksure crescendo.

“Thank you for coming to see me when I’ve only got 10 songs,” he told the crowd late in the show, perhaps to diminish expectations that it would end with an epic reprise of One Direction’s greatest hits. He did expand the set list to 14 by throwing in not just “Stockholm Syndrome” but 1D’s “What Makes You Beautiful,” made far less cloying than its original smash incarnation by its transformation into a legitimate guitar-rocker. A revival of the song he co-wrote for Ariana Grande a few years back, “Just a Little Bit of Your Heart,” also lent the show some familiarity. Although Styles is known to have rehearsed a lot of covers, the only one he’s busting out at present is an encore of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” (Mick Fleetwood was in attendance, going unrecognized at length in the concession area as hundreds of young women passed by on their way to the epic merch line.)

Styles tends toward a poker face, but that does lend extra volubility to the mere breakout of an unexpected grin, as when he reacted with good humor to a microphone repeatedly going floppy during the Ariana Grande number. Even in the more grandstanding, hard-rocking numbers late in the show, there’s still a slight sense of reserve in his physicality, at times. But holding back a little may be a good instinct to have when you’re so iconic that the slightest twitch or unexpected vocal trill gets the kind of roar that’s usually only afforded a football touchdown. He’s still gaging exactly how to work the audience, in this new mode, and you’d be silly to bet against him getting it wrong.

There were few actual dads in the audience, since Styles’ One Direction fan base has aged up to the point where not many of them need chaperoning. But the ones who did get pressed into service may have had some of the most satisfied smiles of all: Getting to fulfill a teenager’s wishes and personally relive the Britpop glory years of Bowie through Blur definitely counts as killing two birds with one stone.

Special props are also due to whoever designed Styles’ very stylin’ turquoise flower-print suit, which looked like it might have refashioned from the greatest 1970s couch ever made. He’s a man who knows how to bring revivalist sexy back in all sorts of ways.

Warnings: Well, FP is clearly older than the reader in this fic, none really

Before homecoming…

FP watched you leave the trailer with a unconscious smirk on his lips.

You really were something else.

He turned to the kitchen and poured himself a coffee, he had to be at Alice Coopers in an hour and if he was honest, he was kind of nervous.

He knew Alice. He knew that this wasn’t just some social gathering to bring the Cooper/Jones family together but he said he’d go since Jughead seemed so damn excited about it. And in the end, he didn’t care that much about Alice’s intentions as long as his son was happy.

And your surprise visit was enough to encourage him to get through the rest of the evening. Knowing that you would be at the Whyte Wyrm in a pair of combat boots and black washed jeans that clung to you so tightly was enough to help FP through the night.

keeping a positive mindset

keeping a positive mindset is very important not only in facing school, but in our daily lives as well. i am by no means a ball on sunshine and am actually quite the opposite but here’s how i try to keep myself positive even when things are looking pretty crap.

1. using bad grades as a motivation

bad grades are inevitable unless you’re some genius who gets all A’s all day err day. i usually take these bad grades as a motivation for myself to study harder. i mean sure it’s completely normal to be upset but use it to bounce back and get yourself in the mood to study.

2. it’s just a bad grade, it does NOT determine your future

one fail grade doesn’t mean you’re a failure, that you’re stupid. no, no, no and NO. everyone has topics or subjects they’re better at. it’s okay to fail a couple of tests but the most important thing is that you’ve put in you best effort into each test. it also doesn’t mean you’ll do badly for the rest of the year/term!! with hard work and a little help from your teacher or your friends i’m sure you’ll be able to pick yourself back up :)

3. hard work always brings results

and by this i don’t mean working hard aimlessly. i mean studying hard and ensuring you clarify what you don’t understand and then practicing to make sure it sticks in your mind. not just writing notes for the sake of writing them and then not understanding a single thing. if you are highly unconvinced about this, i am pretty much your living proof. i’d failed my secondary 3 additional math exam with the second worst grade and managed to pull myself up to a distinction during o’levels, with the help of tuition and me hardcore practicing add math and asking my tutor and friends for help along the way. ((i don’t mean to brag btw!! ><)) so yes, it is possible to improve. if you already decide that you can’t improve, you really won’t.

4. talk/rant it out

ranting or talking about it to a friend may be able to make you feel better, releasing any pent up frustrations. this honestly works for me because i am an explosive af person ((whoops)) and would always ranting about it to my friends. the worst thing you can do, in my opinion, is to swallow everything and keep everything to yourself because that’s the easiest way to a breakdown, which we would want to avoid going through.

5. remember that you aren’t alone

there will always be people struggling with their studies as well, you aren’t the only one struggling/stressed/frustrated/upset. and that’s okay. you don’t always have to have your shit together 24/7, 365 or 366 days a year. it’s okay to mope around for a while but what’s most important is that you pick yourself back up again. in fact, those who look as though they have their shit together may actually be breaking at the seams as well. so no, you aren’t alone. and it’s okay to not be okay. as cheesy as it sounds, it’s true. you can’t be perfect at everything; it’s unrealistic.

i hope this post kinda helped and if you have any requests on what kind of masterposts i should make, don’t hesitate to drop me a message and let me know!

also, if you need to talk to someone, i’m always willing to lend a listening ear. just send me a private message, i’ll get back to you as soon as i can.

stay strong, hang in there and you can do it!! xx -alysa :)

Pictures of Love (Peter Parker)

Pairing: Peter Parker x Reader

Warning: None

Summary: Peter and Y/N have been friends since they were children and as kids, used to childishly flirt with one another all the time until one day, Peter stopped and so did Y/n. Y/N doesn’t realize it until one day looking through old home movies with Aunt May.

Author: Dizzy

A/N: This is just a fluffy little fic I thought up. I hope you like it!

Masterlist Request Any Of These

“Aw, May! I can’t believe you found these!” You cried as you held the old VHS tapes in your hands, each one labeled with a different point in Peter’s life, some titles including your own name. “We have to watch some of these.”

“I was thinking since you’re staying over, you, Peter and I could watch the ones you’re in. You know, reminisce in the old days.”

“May, I would love that." You replied, running your finger along the edge on the tapes, bringing back memories of Peter’s aunt and uncle running around with the camera following you two. "Peter! Hurry up, you slow poke!”

“Okay, okay! I’m coming! Jeez, Y/n, you can’t rush perfection.” Peter stated, waltzing into the room with a bowl of popcorn in hand.

He set the bowl down in front of you and May, who quickly took pieces of the snack as if they’d waited an eternity to eat.

“So much for perfection,” You said. “it’s a little too salty.”

May laughed. “Agreed. Now, Y/n, would you like to do the honors and pick out a video?”

“Gladly!” You chirped, leaning forward and finding a tape that caught your eye when you looked through them earlier.

You picked out the tape marked “Peter and Y/n at the park, age 4” and rose from your seat to put the tape into the player before sitting back down, leaning into Peter, who wrapped an arm around your shoulder and pulled you close.

“Mr. Ben!” Your little voice rang from the tv speakers as your childish grin appeared on the screen. “Watch me do a sumsault!”

Ben’s laughter erupted from the speaker as he focused the camera to show your whole body. “It’s called a somersault, honey. But, I’m watching you, okay?”

“Okay!” You cried before you got down in the grass and did a somersault. “Mr. Ben, where’s Peter?”

The camera changed focus from you to the surrounding areas, in search of little Peter. It finally found him sitting in a patch of grass surrounded by flowers as he picked a bright purple one.

Peter rose from his spot on the ground, the flower in his little grip as he carefully walked around the other flowers and towards you.

The camera then followed Peter on his walk from the patch he sat in to you while you sat in the grass, watching him approach you.

Peter threw his arm before him, pushing the flower into your face.

“Pretty!” you said cheerfully as Peter waddled uncomfortably.

“It’s for you!” Little Peter cried, pushing the flower into your face further.

You plucked the flower from his hand and gave him a confused look as he giggled.

“I’ll get you more!” He shouted before running off as you looked into the camera before the picture cut out.

“Aw!” May squealed. “You two were so cute!”

“I’m pretty sure Y/n was cuter.” Peter stated, smiling over at you.

You rolled your eyes playfully as you released yourself from his hold and changed the tape. Your heart swelled as your mind replayed Peter’s compliment and his gift giving in the video.

You had always has a crush on Peter, even back then when you didn’t really know what a crush was, or how one would show that they had one.

And Peter, well, Peter had a crush on you too. He always had. Even when you hesitated to accept his flowers or the compliments he’d throw your way. Even as children, he was head over heels for his best friend.

“I was such a dork. I know I was literally four, but man, I was a little weirdo.”

You had to admit, Peter with his little flowers was the cutest thing you’d seen in a long time. You thought it was sweet that he had tried to impress your little self with plants.

It was undeniable, from the very start, it seemed as though you and Peter were made for one another.

But, it seemed like all a cruel joke to you since Peter always seemed to be thinking about your friend, Liz. Always a boy with his head in the clouds as he talked to Ned about the girl he thought was beautiful.

“Peter!” You little voice called out for your best friend.

“What, bug?! I’m standing right next to you!”

You and Peter were about six years old, in costumes of your favorite super heroes. You, being Captain America and Peter being Iron Man.

You laughed as you watched the two of you on the tv screen before you glanced over at Peter, who’s arm was up around your shoulders again as he chuckled at the sight of you two.

“Peter, why do you call Y/n bug?” May’ s voice came through the speakers, dripping of kindness as sweet as honey while Ben focused the camera on Peter.

“Be-because Y/n l-likes lady bugs and she likes pretty flowers and s-she is my best friend! A-and she’s pretty like lady bugs and you, Aunt May!” Peter stammered as he spit out the thought out explanation, like it was a secret he didn’t want to tell.

It was then that you made a small squeaking sound and threw your arm’s around Peter’s neck, catching the little boy off guard.

“Thank you, Peter!” You cried out shaking the boy as you hugged him and placed a kiss on his cheek with a quiet smack.

Peter let out an audible gasp before pushing you away from him.

“Bug! That’s gross! You have cooties!” Peter cried out, wiping off the wet spot on his face as May scolded him for being rude.

That’s when the screen went out before it showed you and Peter tucked in Peter’s bed, holding one another as you slept soundly with light snores echoing the room. The screen went black once again.

You looked over at Aunt May, who had fallen asleep on the edge of the couch as you gazed up at Peter, your arm draped over his waist and his arm around yours. You didn’t hesitate as you pressed a kiss to his cheek.

Peter tensed as he froze for a moment. His cheeks heated up as he bit back a smile before looking at you.

“I would yell that you have cooties, but I’ll refrain from doing so.” He whispered into your ear.

The close proximity of Peter’s warm breath on your cold neck and his words set your skin on fire as you playfully pushed him in an attempt to ease the tension you felt.

“Just go put another tape in.” You muttered.

“As you wish.” Peter replied before he pressed a quick kiss to your cheek and got up from next to you.

Peter, in all the time you’d been friends, had never kissed you on the cheek. Nor, had he ever crossed the line between platonic action and romantic difference.

It was an odd and new sensation you felt giddy about.

Yes, you had been kissed on the cheek by other boys, but it hadn’t felt the same as Peter’s kiss had. It was different, new and it made you feel as though you were on cloud nine.

Peter plopped down on the seat next to you as you changed position and laid your legs on him as you leaned back on the arm of the chair. Peter ran his fingers along the lining of your pajama pants as the screen came to life.

“Here, bug!” Little Peter cried, holding a ring pop out to your six year old self.

“A ring pop?! Thank you, Peter!”

You took the ring pop from him and placed it on your ring finger, admiring the blue candy jewel that sat on yellow plastic.

“We’re married now!” Peter hollered before looking at the camera. “That was an epic wedding, right, Uncle Ben?”

“The most epic, Peter.” Ben chuckled. “But Y/n is supposed to know when you’re going to be married. You have to ask if she wants to be.”

Peter then turned to you and smiled before speaking up. “Bug, do you wanna be married to me?”

You titled your head in confusion as you tugged at your “Save Ferris” t shirt.

“What does that mean, Peter?”

“What does what mean? Married?”

“Yeah!”

Peter looked at the camera, or the man behind the camera in an unsure manner before he let his eyes gaze back at you.

“Well, i-it it means th-that we share out candy and then w-we hold hands when it’s c-cold!”

“Then, I wanna be married!” You announced before you threw your arms around him and hugged him tight.

The camera went out before it unleashed a picture of you and Peter in your playhouse.

“What are you guys doing?” It was May behind the camera now as she bent down and watched you two play.

“We’re playing house!” You announced, your ring pop no longer had a jewel on it, but a bit of a slobbering mess.

“Uh huh!” Peter agreed. “Bug is the mommy and I’m the daddy.”

“And these are our babies.” You held up two of your dolls. “Nikin and Luke!”

“It’s Anakin, bug.” Peter corrected. “I named them, Aunt May.”

“Yeah, Ms. May, Peter named them after the guys in Star Wars.”

“It was better than the names bug wanted.” Peter added.

“What did you want to name them, sweetie?” May asked you.

“Ferris and Ducky! Like those people in the movies my mom and I watch.” You explained. “But, I let Peter name the babies cause I like him. But it’s a secret Ms. May, so shh.”

You pressed a finger to your lips as you shushed May.

“I can hear you, bug.” Peter said, not looking up from the play kitchen.

“No you can’t!” You snapped. “Cause I didn’t say anything!”

Then the screen went out and the tape was over.

You took a glance at the clock and then at Peter before you rose from your seat.

“We should probably go to bed. It’s late.” You stated as you turned on your heel and started to walk to Peter’s room.

“I’ll meet you in the room. I’ve got to get Aunt May to bed.”

You signed as you closed the door behind you and leaned up against it. Your mind was going crazy with all the memories of you and Peter and all the feelings you’ve felt for him being recorded in home videos.

It wasn’t until now that you realized Peter has feelings for you when you were kids, but there was no way he liked you now. Every time Peter’s eyes started to wander the lunch room, they weren’t looking for you, they were looking at your friend, Liz.

You took a seat on the bed as Peter walked in, his camera in hand.

“What’s with the camera?” You asked.

“I thought we could add some new memories to the home movies.”

“So you want to video tape me going to bed?” You asked, the camera capturing the confused look on your face.

“No, there was something else I wanted to tape.” Peter said. “Do you want to go out with me?”

“What? Are you messing with me?”

“Um, no? Bug, I love you. I always have. I just want you to know that and I want you to be my girlfriend because you’ve always been there for me from the start.”

“Oh, Peter. Of course I’ll go out with you.” You stated as Peter turned the camera tho face him.

You got up and stood before him as he positioned the camera to face the two of you. You looked into the lens. “You probably don’t want to see this.” You said before covering the lens with your hand and kissing Peter with as much passion as he had when he picked that people flower so long ago.

I had maybe been in my hotel room for 10 minutes, when I got a text from Finn.

(11:23)
Hey Y/N get your lazy ass down to the bar. Everyone is chilling here.

I rolled my eyes at my best friends text and responded.

Thats no way to talk to your friend, but I’ll be down in a second.

I pulled my hair into a messy bun and slipped on my sneakers. I grabbed my room key and headed out the door. I was turning a corner towards the elevator when I ran smack into someone. “What the hell?” I looked up to see Seth smiling down at me.

“Hey sweetheart. Maybe watch where you are going.” Seth moved past me as my mouth hung open.

A/N: Oh man, where do I start? With thanks, of course. To @clockadile for the absolutely beautiful artwork that I can’t believe goes with my story. To @captainstudmuffin for the intense beta work and idea bounces and listening at every turn. To @phiralovesloki for the guidance and the love and more hand-holding than I should’ve ever subjected you to, but still you helped. The first day that Emma Swan remembers, she is barefoot, in nothing but a cotton nightgown that looks straight out of another world, and she is freezing. Her hair is icing over, the wet tendrils hardening in the frigid weather, and she’s vaguely aware that she should be worried about her toes, her fingers, any of the exposed flesh that keeps getting colder by the minute. Instead, she focuses on putting one foot in front of the other, trying to push away the pain that shoots through each foot as she breaks twigs and finds sharp stones with her nearly-numb soles.

She stumbles over a root, crying out as she falls to the mud, her hands sinking into the nearly-frozen earth as a sob wracks through her body. Icy water seeps into the cotton under her knees, and it is tempting, so very tempting, to fall the rest of the way, to curl up in the fallen leaves she spies to her left below a sprawling tree, and let the elements take her away from the pain and confusion she’s drowning in.

Emma Swan does not, in fact, know that she is Emma Swan. She knows that she is a woman, she is lost in a forest, she is in danger of frostbite, and she is losing hope fast as the daylight sinks closer and closer towards the horizon.

So today it was confirmed that there would be an 8th Character Song (picture taken the Chinese website ohYYFU.com) to follow up the Levi and Erwin songs, and that is the Beast Titan’s Song titled “Ceaseless Animosity”! It’s set to release on August 1st as a bonus to the Season 2 Blu-Rays. Coincidentally, that is also Zeke’s birthday in the manga. At the moment, it’s unknown if it will have a separate release like the remaining songs.

And of course, the song will star the Beast Titan’s voice actor, Koyasu Takehito, who hasn’t done any music-related work in a while, so this should be exciting and definitely something to look forward!

As with the other releases, Ceaseless Animosity will contain the song, its Instrumental version as well as two monologue sequences, unlike one like the other songs. The information (Be aware, that some translations may or may not be inaccurate) states that one of them will be the typical monologue we get in the other songs, while there is no information about the second one. It could be a Part 2 or some other type of content. Really excited for it!

Take out with full credit.

People can forgive toxic parents, but they should do it at the conclusion—not at the beginning—of their emotional housecleaning. People need to get angry about what happened to them. They need to grieve over the fact that they never had the parental love they yearned for. They need to stop diminishing or discounting the damage that was done to them. Too often, “forgive and forget” means “pretend it didn’t happen.”

I also believe that forgiveness is appropriate only when parents do something to earn it. Toxic parents, especially the more abusive ones, need to acknowledge what happened, take responsibility, and show a willingness to make amends. If you unilaterally absolve parents who continue to treat you badly, who deny much of your reality and feelings, and who continue to project blame onto you, you may seriously impede the emotional work you need to do. If one or both parents are dead, you can still heal the damage, by forgiving yourself and releasing much of the hold that they had over your emotional well-being.

At this point, you may be wondering, understandably, if you will remain bitter and angry for the rest of your life if you don’t forgive your parents. In fact, quite the opposite is true. What I have seen over the years is that emotional and mental peace comes as a result of releasing yourself from your toxic parents’ control, without necessarily having to forgive them. And that release can come only after you’ve worked through your intense feelings of outrage and grief and after you’ve put the responsibility on their shoulders, where it belongs.

As Vernon’s girlfriend and a fan of Seventeen, it had only been natural for you to watch every single teaser they posted up til the release of their album Al1. His was the very first teaser and you had loved it already, and they kept the level of aesthetic pleasantness until the very end.

The most memorable teaser for you, however, ended up being Jun’s one. Sadly, it wasn’t necessarily for him, but for the voice that was speaking at the beginning of the teaser, which just happened to belong to Joshua.

And, well, that voice just happened to make your imagination run wild: there was something about Joshua’s voice, as calm and beautiful as it may be, that you found incredibly attractive, and you unashamedly played the teaser over and over again, to the point of Vernon finding it funny.

Little did he know.

Witchy Lifestyle: Safe Practice (Pt. I)

There’s a topic that I don’t often see floating around the web in regards to witchcraft. Amid all of the encouragements and inspiration, talk of gods and spirits, and beautiful aesthetic, we don’t often see much of the more unsafe parts of being a witch…

Now before I go any further, I am not trying to make it seem like being a witch is a bad thing. That would be awfully hypocritical, coming from a witch who’s been practicing for a little over half his life. Rather, I want to address something that everyone who practices or wishes to practice should know: witchcraft is not inherently “safe.” This is in regards to the more mundane aspects and the spiritual aspects. I’ll address some of what I can, as well as give some recommendations for safe practice.

And don’t fear! Even if you’re brand new to witchcraft, you can still practice. As always, what I’m recommending is to educate yourself as much as possible and to explore with confidence and humility.

Mundane: Burning Shit

Fire safety may seem like a no-brainer. But there are those out there who neglect fire safety for the sake of a spell or rite. Under no circumstances should you ever neglect proper fire safety. Just like in D&D, the gods aren’t going to save you from stupid.

1) Ventilation: Whether it’s incense, offerings, or a candle, always burn in a well-ventilated area. This prevents smoke and ash buildup in an area, and also voids “hot spots.” The flame will be able to breathe without spreading, and there’s less risk of catching something else aflame. If your flame is open (such as on a taper candle) keep hair and loose clothing tied up or well away from the flame, and avoid placing it near walls or curtains.

2) Containers: Always burn the substance in a heat-proof container. Using a heat-proof container prevents melting, scorching, or spreading flame. Plastic is unwise because if scorched or burnt, it can release harmful chemicals (not to mention melts and makes a horrible mess). Glass is advisable if it is tempered and designed to be heat proof. (If it is not, you risk cracking - or worse, shattering - the glass). Other safe substances (be sure to read labels and warnings!) may include ceramic, terra cotta, cast iron, and brass.

3) Substance: One of the biggest peeves I have when it comes to reading about DIY incense or burnt offerings and such is when such herbs as mugwort or rose petals are included. ALWAYS do your research before burning plants. Some (such as rose petals) will simply smell horrible. Others have toxic chemicals that, when released during burning, can cause symptoms ranging from burns or rashes to inflammation of the respiratory tract, neurological damage, or even death depending upon the plant being burnt. To an extent, many of these can be avoided simply by burning in a well ventilated area. Others should only be smoked/burnt in moderation (such as mugwort, which can be a neurotoxin in doses that are too high and too frequent).

4) Supervision: Many spells call for allowing a candle to completely burn down. While practical for quick-burning candles (such as birthday candles), it’s hard to remain in a room for hours on end, waiting for that seven-day candle to burn down. Some traditions aren’t too finicky about burning down the candle. But for those that are, be sure that you are ALWAYS around and aware of the candle flame so as to prevent accidents. Keep water or an extinguisher on hand (just in case) and if the worst happens, do not hesitate to call an emergency line.

Mundane: Consumption of Herbs/Substances

Let’s face it. In witchcraft, there is a lot of eating and drinking. Many of us include a “cakes and ale” or “communion” in our rites. Still others of us have an emphasis on cooking, or on making herbal teas and infusions. And, of course, there are plenty of witches out there (myself included) who may partake in the smoking of or eating of different types of herbs (such as tobacco or cannabis).

One of the best things anyone can do if they see a spell or recipe calling for a substance they’re unfamiliar with is to research that substance. Learn as much as possible: its preparation, health benefits and side effects, history, et cetera. This has a couple of positive benefits. First, you become knowledgeable about what you are eating or smoking. Second, you avoid consuming something that may be toxic.

Take elderberry, for example. Many people have it growing right in their backyards. But it’s dangerous to use it without the proper knowledge. The berries can cause stomach upsets if unripe, and the wood should never be burnt or ingested for any reason (this includes making whistles and the like) while still wet and green because it is toxic. Furthermore, if you’re unsure of the distinction between elder and water hemlock, you run the risk of consuming the hemlock - the whole of the plant being extremely toxic and deadly.

So always be sure to know what you are putting in your body. Even something which seems safe enough may have unexpected or dangerous side effects (if you suffer from anxiety, for example, you should be careful of what strains of cannabis you smoke or eat, because some strains can trigger panic attacks and heightened anxiety).

If you are working a spell for health or healing which calls for certain herbs, be sure to look into what medications you’re taking to avoid any harmful combinations. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU USE MAGIC OR HERBALISM AS A REPLACEMENT FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT. Magic and alternative medicines are meant to be supplements rather than replacements. To neglect your physical condition is dangerous, and your physician should always be addressed if you’re feeling ill.

Smoking anything should be done with caution, and should only be done legally. This means learning local ordinance and laws regarding the substance and acquiring the proper permits if necessary. Some places put age restrictions on substances such as cannabis and tobacco. Others have it outlawed completely (as in the case of cannabis depending on where you live). In addition, smoking anything can be harmful to health due to tar and ash entering the lungs.

IN NO WAY DO I CONDONE UNDERAGE SMOKING OF ANY SUBSTANCE.

Do your research, and be careful, please.

Mundane/Spiritual: Sex and Body Fluids

This is something that (luckily) many witches are very careful to warn about. In large part, this is due to the fact that the community is largely built of strong and empowered women or feminists. But when new to witchcraft, it is still important to address.

The use of body fluids in magic (i.e. blood, menstrual discharge, semen, saliva, et cetera) can make a spell particularly powerful and bound to the witch working it. However, body fluids are a great way of transmitting diseases, as well. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU SHARE OR EXCHANGE BODY FLUIDS WITH OTHER PEOPLE. This includes if they’ve been dried out. So if you’re putting together a spell sachet, for example, don’t feed or anoint it with blood, saliva, semen, et cetera. Instead, perhaps add a strand of hair or a fingernail clipping if a taglock is completely necessary.

And when working with body fluids, be sure that you know what kind of magic you’re using, how it works, and why. Offering any body fluids to a deity or spirit is something that should be done cautiously and only with a spirit with which you’ve developed a strong and beneficial relationship.

Sex magic is not uncommon. While some shy away from the topic, it’s important to understand that magic has various ways of being worked. Intense emotion or some sort of trigger to set intent is often used. This can be done through meditation, but it can also be done through achieving orgasm.

Some covens or couples will also make use of sex to reflect fertility aspects of their deities.

Whether straight or LGBTQ+, always practice safe sex. This includes the use of condoms and contraceptives, engaging in physical acts only with those you trust completely, in a legal manner (including age and location), and while completely clear of mind (no drugs, alcohol, et cetera).

To Be Continued…

There is more to go over. But as I’ve said, let this article not deter you from practicing witchcraft. Part of practicing witchcraft is being sensible, safe, and educated about what you’re doing. Always be well prepared!

Blessed Be! )O(

Polyester Makes Her Butt Itchy

Harry knew Y/N’s love for animals were strong, she was always kind to each one she saw. Y/N went to pet stores everyday, no matter if she barely had enough time she would make time. Everytime she came back she would ask Harry the same question “Can we please get a pet please H? You know I’ll take care of it, maybe we can get something small like a mouse, spider, or something please?”

Harry was taken aback the first time she’d asked the question, he knew damn well the spider was out of the question. He didn’t want to risk getting scared at night and accidentally kill it then consul her after breaking the unfortunate news. But that day and onward his answer had been the same, “Pretty girl, you know I would love nothing more than getting you a pet, but when I take you on tour with me it’s not very practical to have a cat with you. Even if you leave it at home who’s going to take care of it for that long? I’m sorry love, but it’s a no.“

Telling Y/N no made his heart stop, she never asked him to throw all his money into her needs and wants. So it was extremely easy for him to say yes to her, well the only thing he hesitated on was letting her do is make up, after a few kisses and a blowie he agreed.

Y/N called Harry before walking out of the house, “Hey H, I’m about to walk down to the pet store, Louise said she’d keep it open for thirty extra minutes so I can’t pass that up. You’ll most likely get home before me so can you preheat the oven?” Y/N fumbled with the keys before putting them in her pocket and walked toward the shop. “Unfortunately love, I’m gonna hafta pull an all nighter at the stu’. If I do that and work tomorrow as well I’ll get this weekend free.” A free weekend sounded great to Y/N so no complaints left her lips.

“Yeah that’s fine. I’m here H, I’ll call you when I finish.”

“Okay love, can’t wait to see yeh this weekend cause I have a surprise jus’ for yeh. Love ya pretty girl.”

Y/N’s cheeks got heated at the thought of his surprise. “Okay Har, Love you too.” she opened the door as soon as the conversation ended. Y/N was used to seeing Louise at the front desk waiting for her, but today was different. “Louise? Where are you?” she called out. “Back here!” Y/N maneuvered her way to the back of the shop. Louise stood to greet the guest but with tears in her eyes, Y/N’s heart immediately broke and she pulled Louise into a hug.

“Oh my goodness are you okay? Was it Kevin? I told you that butt was no good for you.” Y/N pouted while combing through Louise’s newly red hair. “No it’s not him, it’s Minty. We have to put her down tomorrow since her medication is getting pricey and we barely have enough to feed and take care of all the animals. I’ve called every cruelty free animal shelter and they have no room.”

Y/N herself started to ball her eyes out at this news, Minty was Y/N’s favorite animal there, of course she treated and loved on all the pets there the same amount, but Minty held a special place in her heart. “Are you sure? No one wants to buy her or anything?” Y/N quickly ran to get her favorite cat, minty, and cuddled her next to Louise. The redhead sighed and went to pet the cat in question "No, I’ve tried giving her to other shelters, but they don’t have space. I tried to give her away for free but when they find out about her condition, they bail.”

Y/N sighed and placed kisses on the top of the cats head. “Then I’ll take her.” the redhead shot up “You can’t, you know what Harry will say then you’d have to give her back and then she’d get put down the next day.” Y/N shook her head, “No that’s not going to happen. I’m not letting go of her when I could have done something to stop it. Harry can yell at me and chew me out all he wants because honestly I don’t give a damn. Won’t let Harry return this cat, if he even thinks about it I’ll beat his ass with a  hammer.” Louise chuckled at Y/N she may have been quiet and sweet but if you fucked with something she loved, she won’t hesitate to release hell upon the one who wronged her. “Well love bird, if you’re serious let’s get some paper work done.”

After about forty minutes of paper work, Minty was officially Y/N’s. While the redhead locked up shop, Y/N called Niall, “Hey Ni! How are you?”
Niall sighed on his end of the line. “You only call me ‘Ni’ when you do something wrong. What’d you do?” Y/N mentally cursed herself for letting Niall in as a big brother and knowing all of her tells. “You know how I love animals rig-”

“Christ Y/N, you didn’t. Who am I kidding, fucking huge heart of yours. What happened?”

Y/N cooed at the kitten in her lap, “Well, you know Louise and how she has a pet shop? Minty is my favorite cat and they were going to put her down and I couldn’t allow it, so I took her home. Harry’s going to be pissed I don’t know what to say to him.” Niall cleared his throat, “With that reason alone Harry wouldn’t be upset with you hell, throw some puppy dog eyes and tears? You’d get away with bloody murder.”

Y/N chuckled knowing he was completely right, “Well we just pulled up to Pet Smart, I’ll call you later yeah?”

“Okay sweetheart stay safe.”

Louise and Y/N walked around the store picking out toys, food, bowls, collars, a cute sailor outfit Y/N just couldn’t pass up, and finally a bed that felt just right and was made of the right materials because, “Polyester makes her butt itchy. So get something with way more cotton than polyester.

While Y/N looked for a bed, Louise started ordering Minty’s medication. They got every thing they needed and drove to Y/N and Harry’s shared home. After setting a up a small scratching post and letting Minty get used to the house, Y/N decided she held the redhead captive enough and let her go for the night. Once things got settled down, she called Harry.

” 'Ello love. I thought yeh said she’d keep it open fo’ thirty minutes not two hours.“

"Yeah, after visiting the pets we came back to the house and watched a movie. Kinda lost lost track of time but at least I called.” Y/N decided not to tell him over the phone, this was a matter that had to be discussed face to face. “Ahh I’m glad yeh got a girl’s night. Anythin’ else?”

“Nope, just chillin’.” Harry laughed and they continued their conversation until she got tired.

Today was the day. Early Saturday morning, she made Harry’s favorite breakfast and waiting at the kitchen’s island for Harry to walk through the door. As Y/N poured juice for herself, Harry walked into the kitchen. “Goo’ morning pretty girl, whatcha up ta?” Y/N smiled and ran into his arms, “I made breakfast come on, let’s eat.” Halfway through breakfast, Harry felt Y/N’s foot rubbing against his ankle. “If ya wanna play footsies jus’ ask.”

Y/N furrowed her eyebrows “I’m not doing anythin’.” Harry gave her a face then looked down at his feet. His chewing slowed and his eyes got wide, “Tha fuck!” Y/N’s eyes also wided in realization, “H, baby hear me out th-”

Harry swallowed his food and looked up at Y/N. “You have negative five seconds to explain the cat at my foot.” it’s was obvious he was holding back yelling at his girl, the proof in the vains protruding from his neck. She ran over to pick the cat up and bury it in her chest. “H, they were going to put her down today since she was getting expensive and no one would take her. Yell at me call me what ever names you want, I don’t care but you aren’t taking Minty away from me!”

Harry immediately soften at the mention of Minty. Everyday after her vists she would always go on about this particular cat and how happy she made her. Harry saw the love in her eyes every time she talked about her. He sighed and walked toward Y/N and the cat. “Tha’s Minty?” the worried girl nodded her head. He looked his lover in the eye before holding his hands out for the kitty. “If she makes yeh that happy, I guess yeh can keep her.” Y/N’s eyes filled with tears as she jumped and cheered around the kitchen.

“You hear that Mint? I can keep you!”

After that fiasco, all three cuddled on the couch and watched TV. “Mmm wait, get up fo’ a second.” Y/N lifted herself off of Harry’s lap and watched him walk toward his abandoned bag at the door. “Here.”, he placed a smallish rectangular box on her lap. Y/N opened the box to reveal a phone case with a picture of her and Harry as the design. She cooed at the case then leaped up the give Harry a kiss and a hug, “Oh my gosh, thank you thank you thank you! I love it babe!” He smiled into the hug and rubbed her back.

“ ’m glad yeh do.”

dragontremer  asked:

Why do thundershirts work to calm dogs down when they usually don't like being hugged because they feel trapped?

Dogs don’t like human hugs because they’re rude and not allowed to leave the social situation, not because the pressure of the hug is itself necessarily aversive (although it can be). There are dogs that absolutely like strong physical contact - but they’re generally the ones allowed to initiate it themselves, or the ones whose people back off when the dog gives them signals of discomfort. If your dog has ever curled up hard against you when something scary is going on, that’s also a behavior that creates deep pressure on their bodies.

As best I understand it, deep pressure calms the sympathetic part of the nervous system (the “fight or flight” part) and helps activate the parasympathetic part of the nervous systems (which is what helps you calm down after you’ve just run away from a tiger). I believe it also decreases heart rate and may release endorphins as well.

That doesn’t mean that a dog is going to feel better if they’re terrified and you suddenly put a thundershirt on it - because yes, that’s restrictive and not something they’re comfortable with. Dogs need to be trained to wear a thundershirt and relax while wearing it, just like with any other piece of tack or clothing.
