Some of these photos capture the people in them perfectly. Not that I’m a particularly good photographer–I’m not. I’ve always been more of documentarian than an artist. But that doesn’t mean I’m not more proud of some of my work than I am of others. And I’m proud of this photo because it captures something authentic and familiar about both Nene and Mimi, and also how good of a day today was.
Because I have a 90-year-old great-grandmother, I thought I’d go see her today and ask her to share a story or two with me. Here, she holds her youngest son’s leg brace he wore once it was discovered he had polio.
For three decades I’ve been coming to my great-grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve. About the time I learn the names of all my cousins, one of them has a kid and I have to start all over. She’s almost 91 years old and I’m convinced she knows what every one of us is up to.
