Cutaway of the Day: Mauser Model 98

Officially designated the Gewehr 98, it was adopted in 1898 as a replacement for the Gewehr 1888.  It saw service in Germany’s colonial holdings in East Africa and then in western Europe during WWI.  It’s bolt  had 3 locking lugs which improved on Mauser’s earlier design, the Gewehr 98 would spawn the 98k - Germany’s rifle of choice during WWII and also influence the design of countless other rifles including America’s Springfield 1903.
