Matthew Hemerlein was driving through Arizona, on his way across the country, in 2012. He had just signed to the 4AD label, and he knew he didn’t want to release his debut album under his given name, but he hadn’t determined what his alter ego would be. That’s when it simply popped into his head: Lo-Fang.
After the fact, the 30-year-old singer-songwriter came up with many reasons why the alias suited him perfectly—its hint of Taoism, its resemblance to “Wu-Tang Clan,” the softness of the Lo contrasted with the violence of the Fang. It stands to reason that Animals as Leaders mastermind Tosin Abasi is probably one of the most versatile musicians in the industry. Not only is he an incredibly visionary, but more notably he is so well practiced at guitar that he could probably perfect the arpeggio in his sleep.
While no musician should be a one trick pony, Tosin abandons his usual technical finger work for a more subdued, but still incredible rendition of Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android”. Accompanied by bassist and multi-instrumentalist, Matthew Hemerlein, Tosin at times takes the backseat to his playing, which shows not only how humble he is, but how willing he is to step out of the spot light despite his talent for the sake of a cover.
Animals as Leaders has easily become one of my favorite bands the past year and I’ve been a pretty big Radiohead fan for even longer, so this cover was definitely a nice treat. If you’re a fan of either of these incredible bands, then please check this out. You will be incredibly pleased with what Matt and Tosin have come up with.
