Oscar de la Renta: "My Job is to Make Women Look Their Best"

“George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can’t imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress,” George Clooney’s bride told Vogue in an exclusive interview. “Meeting him made the design process all the more magical, as he is so warm and such a gentleman.” De la Renta, pictured here during the final fitting with Alamuddin in his showroom, hand embroidered the ivory tulle bodice with beading and crystals, and used fourteen yards of Chantilly lace.

Back in April, the designer presented his latest wedding day creations that most brides would kill to wear. Hair was parted down the middle and gathered at the nap of the neck, while pink matte cheeks and pale lipgloss provided the finishing touches.

But the designer adapted it with a body-hugging silhouette and playful bustle. “Every woman dreams of that day,” the designer wrote about this collection. “You have to go the extra mile and fulfill that dream to make something that a woman will fall in love with.” Rosy cheeks, defined brows, and juicy lips along with an low side chignon enhanced the contemporary style.

Renowned designer Oscar de la Renta passed away on Monday night at 82 years old. Born in the Dominican Republic, he moved to Europe and studied under famed couturier Cristobal Balenciaga and as an assistant at Lanvin learning the intricacies of haute couture. He came to New York in the 1960s, convinced that more casual, ready-to-wear styles were the future of fashion. By 1965, de la Renta launched his own label and became a household name after dressing first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy.

Since then, every celebrity from Sarah Jessica Parker to Oprah Winfrey to first lady Michelle Obama to George Clooney’s new bride Amal Alamuddin have clamored to wear de la Renta’s elegant, feminine creations. His garments are impeccable and polished yet incredibly wearable and flattering. Likewise, the hair and makeup looks he’s chosen to complement his grand collections on the runway always made the models the most radiant they’d every looked. “I have always felt my role as a designer is to do the very best I can for a woman to make her look her best,” de la Renta once said. And it’s a hard fact to argue. His talent and celebration of the beauty of women will be truly missed.
