matt mondanille

Today, I learned that Real Estate member Matt Mondanile has another project named Ducktails. He brings plenty of that warm, languid Real Estate sound on his new single Headbanging In The Mirror. Disclaimer: you won’t be headbanging anywhere to this laid back, swirly treat. It’s a hazy, mellow jam that features NY ambient and vaporwave producer James Ferraro, too. Headbanging In The Mirror is from Ducktails’ new album St. Catherine, out July 24th on Domino.

“Bad Fog of Loneliness” by Matt Mondanile // Originally by Neil Young (2015)

It’s always a nice treat when one of your favorite artists decides to release random one off bedroom pop treats. Here, Matt Mondanile (guitarist for Real Estate / frontman for Ducktails) turns out a gentle and loose cover of Neil Young’s back catalog gem, “Bad Fog of Loneliness”. It’s the kind of sweet, shambling lullaby that you can easily get lost inside of in the later hours. Just a shame that it’s so short!

VOTD: Real Estate - “Darling”

Real Estate have announced a new album, In Mind, out March 17 via Domino. Better yet, the announcement came with the release of a new single and video, “Darling.” This will be the band’s first release since 2014’s Atlas. The three years have brought some changes to Real Estate that can be seen from the video: they are without Matt Mondanile and have a new guitarist, Julian Lynch. Amidst a plain white backdrop, the quintet is dressed up in matching denim jackets, looking dapper as ever. Oh, and there’s a horse that makes a guest appearance. Despite the changes in the band’s lineup, Real Estate’s signature sound still chimes through, and the horse really digs it, as do I. There’s not much going on in the video (minus the horse) as it’s your standard performance video, but its charming simplicity allows Real Estate’s characteristically comforting, dreamy synths and velvety guitars wash over you. Frontman Martin Courtney lulls you into ideas of romantic longing as he croons, “Impatiently, as I wait for you.” And yes, Martin, we are all impatiently awaiting this new album to drop, but for now, we have this video to enjoy.

“Vestiges” by Martin Courtney // Vestiges - Single (2015)

Real Estate has become one of the most consistently great bands making music today and a big part of that is the excellent guitar, songwriting, and vocal work of frontman, Martin Courtney. So, hearing that he has ventured out into solo work (much like his bandmates Alex Bleeker and Matt Mondanile, of The Freaks and Ducktails, respectively), is a cause for great interest. That interest pays off immediately on the jazzy, laidback guitar pop that is “Vestiges”. Courtney has done some one-off solo work in the past, but here’s hoping that we’re on the verge of seeing something more concrete - though, hopefully not at the expense of his main band.

Mac Demarco in the shower with another man? Whattt? Watch the video above. Real Estate’s Matt Mondanile is getting ready to release his new Ducktails album, St. Catherine. The Richard Law-directed clip for the new song “Surreal Exposure” shows Mondanile spending some time at the Far Rockaway, Queens home of Mac DeMarco. Spoiler: It ends with both men in a shower.
