Interview: Drinkin' Cokes with Perry

By Matt Garlick

The first time I encountered the surf punking, nacho loving, Renaissance man that is Perry Shall, it was on a Screaming Females blog post. It was a drawing of Perry sitting on a plane, cracking open a Coke (his favorite soda), and drooling at the mouth with flies swarming around him and saying, “Do they serve nachos on dis flight?” That image stayed in my mind for quite sometime. Then I saw Perry’s name pop up on another one of my favorite band’s blogs, Jeff The Brotherhood. All the post said was “PERRY IZ ON TOUR WITH US,” which was followed by three photos of the man himself. Soon I started seeing Perry’s name come up more and more, whether it was through the Jeff The Brotherhood’s twitter, Evil Weevil’s site, or general onlinery. I wanted to find out what made him so special, what made all these bands that I loved like him so much, so when I found out that Perry was with Jeff The Brotherhood for their We Are The Champions tour, which he did the album art for, and that they were playing Nashville when I was going to be there, I just had to meet him.

Interview: Hotboxin' with Natural Child

By Matt Garlick

When I went down to Nashville, I was determined to see as many of my favorite bands as I could, one of them being Natural Child, a three-piece made up of Seth, Wes, and Zack. They had no dates scheduled for the two weeks I was going to be there, but by the time I left Nashville, I had seen them play twice. One was at Third Man when The Strange Boys recorded their live LP, but the first gig was at a house and was my favorite show in Nashville, if not the entire year.

As I got to the show, I was still nursing the hangover from all the trouble I’d gotten into in Memphis the night before. I didn’t care though, I was about to see Natural Child in someone’s bedroom, and all I could think about was how fucking cool that was. After openers Deluxin’, Ben Spinks Supermelt, and New Pleasure each played a killer set, some friends and I went to go meet Natural Child. Rebecca beckoned me to their van, and as the doors opened, waves of smoke flooded out. All that could be heard was Parliament Funkadelic singing, “I call my baby pussycat, I spell it P.U.S.S.Y,” and everyone in the van was singing and grooving along. After quite some time, Wes turned off the car and the music, and as he was about to get up, my friend chimed up and said, “the bowl’s not done.“ In one fluid motion, he sat down, turned the engine back on, put on The Stones, and punched the lights out.
